    This book sets out a framework for investigating audience responses to political discourse. It starts from the premise that audiences are active participants who bring their own background knowledge and political standpoint to the communicative event. To operationalise this perspective, the volume draws on concepts from classical rhetoric alongside contemporary research in cognitive stylistics and cognitive linguistics (including schema theory, Text World Theory, Cognitive Grammar, and mind-modelling, amongst others). It examines the role played by the speaker’s identity, the arguments they make, and the emotions of the audience in the – often critical – reception of political text and talk, using a diversity of examples to illustrate this three-dimensional approach – from political speeches, interviews and newspaper articles, to more creative text-types such as politicised rap music, television satire and filmic drama. The result of this wide-ranging application is a holistic and systematic account of the rhetorical and ideological effects of political discourse in reception.

Rauh arbeitet heraus, dass - auch bedingt durch die damalige Wirtschaftskrise, vor allem die Lebensmittelknappheit - die Mehrheit der DDR-Bürger im Alltag ganz andere Probleme hatte.Schon der Titel ist eine Provokation. Allerdings ist das nicht die Meinung des Autors, wie er einleitend begründet. Ihn interessiert, weshalb es nach dem Errichten der Berliner Mauer in der DDR nicht zu Massenprotesten kam. Bisherige Forschungen behaupten zumeist, dass die Mehrheit der DDR-Bevölkerung den Mauerbau ablehnte. Dabei wurde kaum zur Kenntnis genommen, wie der "normale" Bürger reagierte. R. Rauh kommt, gestützt auf die Auswertung der Forschungsliteratur, vieler Quellen (u.a. Briefe und Nachlässe) und Interviews sowie einer eigenen Befragung von 600 Menschen, die den Mauerbau bewusst erlebt haben, zu einem anderen Ergebnis. Die gröe︣ren Proteste gab es nicht in der DDR, sondern in West-Berlin. Er arbeitet mehrere Gründe heraus, weshalb sich die Menschen im Osten so passiv verhielten. Eine wichtige Ursache sind für ihn die wirtschaftlichen Probleme, welche die Bevölkerung im Alltag sehr beschäftigten. Die Butterknappheit interessierte die meisten Bürger mehr als die Grenzschliessung in Berlin. - Ein provokantes Buch, dass schon heftig auf Leserbriefseiten von Zeitungen diskutiert wird.     "In Modernist Writing and Reactionary Politics, Charles Ferrall argues that the politics of Yeats, Pound, Eliot, Lawrence, and Wyndham Lewis were a response to the increasing separation of art from a society undergoing a second industrial revolution. Fascism became attractive to these writers because it promised to reintegrate art into society while simultaneously guaranteeing its autonomy. As a kind of parodic avantgarde, it therefore allowed the reactionaries to be both 'primitive' and 'modern' at the same time. Yet with the exception of Pound and Yeats, these writers all finally rejected fascism preferring instead to see the aesthetic as a sphere in permanent opposition to liberal democracy, rather than the basis for a new social order. Individual chapters focus on Yeats and decolonisation, Pound and 'the Jews', Eliot and the uncanny, Lawrence and homosexuality, and Lewis and the Cartesian primitive. Ferrall's account of why some of the greatest writers of the early twentieth century became involved in reactionary politics offers new insights into the relation between modernist aesthetics, technology and avant-gardism."--BOOK JACKET.

    "The subject of this book is a new "Islam." This Islam began to take shape in 1988 around the Rushdie affair, the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989, and the first Gulf War of 1991. It was consolidated in the period following September 11, 2001. It is a name, a discursive site, a signifier at once flexible and constrained...indeed, it is a geopolitical agon, in and around which some of the most pressing aporias of modernity, enlightenment, liberalism, and reformation are worked out. At this discursive site are many metonyms for Islam: the veiled or "pious" Muslim woman, the militant, the minority Muslim injured by Western free speech. Each of these figures functions as a cipher enabling repeated encounters with the question "How do we free ourselves from freedom?" Again and again, freedom is imagined as Western, modern, imperial...a dark imposition of Enlightenment. The pious and injured Muslim who desires his or her own enslavement is imagined as freedom's other. At Freedom's Limit is an intervention into current debates regarding religion, secularism, and Islam and provides a deep critique of the anthropology and sociology of Islam that have consolidated this formation. It shows that, even as this Islam gains increasing traction in cultural production from television shows to movies to novels, the most intricate contestations of Islam so construed are to be found in the work of Muslim writers and painters. This book includes extended readings of jihadist proclamations; postcolonial law; responses to law from minorities in Muslim-majority societies; Islamophobic films; the novels of Leila Aboulela, Mohammed Hanif, and Nadeem Aslam; and the paintings of Komail Aijazuddin"..
