    Notes:

Press "ONE" for English examines how Americans form opinions on language policy issues such as declaring English the official language, printing documents in multiple languages, and bilingual education. Deborah Schildkraut shows that people's conceptions of American national identity play an integral role in shaping their views. Using insights from American political thought and intellectual history, she highlights several components of that identity and shows how they are brought to bear on debates about language. Her analysis expands the range of factors typically thought to explain attitudes in such policy areas, emphasizing in particular the role that civic republicanism's call for active and responsible citizenship plays in shaping opinion on language issues. Using focus groups and survey data, Schildkraut develops a model of public conceptions of what it means to be American and demonstrates the complex ways in which people draw on these conceptions when forming and explaining their views. In so doing she illustrates how focus group methodology can help yield vital new insights into opinion formation. With the rise in the use of ballot initiatives to implement language policies, understanding opinion formation in this policy area has become imperative. This book enhances our understanding of this increasingly pressing concern, and points the way toward humane, effective, and broadly popular language policies that address the realities of American demographics in the twenty-first century while staying true to the nation's most revered values

The power of mass culture and the importance of public opinion seem rooted in the technology and political institutions of the twentieth century. But Paula Backscheider finds surprising evidence of their origin in seventeenth-century England. In Spectacular Politics: Theatrical Power and Mass Culture in Early Modern England, Backscheider argues that historians and literary critics have overestimated the importance of printed texts and literacy in the formation of a politically involved and opinionated public. Backscheider looks to other texts - to popular drama as well as less accessible forms such as street pageants and Christmas pantomimes - and discovers deliberate and sophisticated interactions of mass culture and public opinion. Backscheider offers three detailed examples of how popular literature participates in important social processes in which public opinion and acceptance are at stake In the first reconstruction of the London street pageants staged from 1659 to 1662, she describes how Charles II used theatrical events to reimpose the concept of a Stuart monarchy - and how his opponents responded with rival entertainments advocating a different idea of the monarchy and the future. She then examines the London theatrical season of 1695-96, when one third of the new plays performed were written by women. Here Backscheider shows how transgressive, revisionary literature can awaken censoring and collaborative forces even as it opens debate In her final section, Backscheider presents the first critical reconstruction and serious analysis of gothic drama, an early and indisputable example of "mass culture." She demonstrates how these popular entertainments expressed the public's deepest anxieties, while offering a redeeming image of humankind and the nation, as England faced the Regency Crisis of 1788-89 - when George III was judged "hopelessly mad." Backscheider illustrates the various ways in which literature participates in the ideological struggle for intellectual, moral, and philosophical dominance in a society. Each case also shows the significance of how a people imagines itself and its "story" - and what happens when established notions of identiry are challenged or threatened. At such moments of crisis, Backscheider concludes, radically original and culturally powerful texts come into being, new genres are created, and literary works become mass culture

"In this book, a renowned literary critic explores the various ways we have thought about scholars and scholarship through the ages. Why is it, Nuttall asks, that in the nineteenth century the life of the mind becomes equated with a kind of death in life?" "A. D. Nuttall focuses on three people, two real and one fictitious: the classical scholar Isaac Casaubon, who lived from 1559 to 1614; Mark Pattison, rector of Lincoln College, Oxford, in the nineteenth century; and Mr. Casaubon in George Eliot's Middlemarch. The three are intricately related, for Pattison was seen by many as the model for Eliot's Mr. Casaubon, and he was also the author of what is still the best book on Isaac Casaubon." "Nuttall provides a provocative interpretation of Middlemarch, arguing that it contains an anti-feminist thesis ("This is a young woman with highfalutin ideas who really needs some strong sex from a man to straighten her out.") coexisting with a feminist thesis ("The life of the mind, unsuccessfully essayed by Mr. Casaubon, is tragically withheld from his wife, Dorothea."). He shows that at nearly the same time Middlemarch was being written, Mark Pattison was recording in his Memoirs his own introverted intellectual life and self-lacerating depression. Pattison's book on Isaac Casaubon leads Nuttall back to this earlier figure, a great and fulfilled scholar who personifies the ideal of detailed, unspectacular truthtelling, an ideal often imperiled in our own culture, remarks Nuttall. He ends the book with a meditation on morality, sexuality, and the virtues of scholarship."--BOOK JACKET.
