Cultural diversity is a global challenge for mental health services. The changing demography of communities requires rethinking approaches to cultural competence for health professionals and institutions. Cultural consultation is a way to improve the quality of mental health care by providing a nuanced understanding of the predicaments that prompt diverse clients to seek help, and the social contexts of their mental health problems, to guide clinical assessment and intervention. Cultural Consultation explores the practice of cultural consultation as a strategy to improve the quality of mental health care for diverse populations. The contributors, who have worked together at an innovative clinical service, frame best practices in psychiatry clinical psychology, and social work in relation to empathy, human rights, and culturally responsive and ethically sound care. A detailed model of the process of cultural consultation, from initial intake, through assessment, to recommendations and referrals, provides guidelines for clinical practice. Expert contributors examine specialized settings (medical, psychiatric emergency, inpatient, social/legal services), populations (remote, indigenous, child and youth), and contextual issues in the care of people with a wide range of mental health problems. Numerous case examples, charts, and tools add depth for readers interested in developing similar services or enhancing existing practice. Among the key areas covered:  Working with interpreters and culture brokers. Family systems in cultural consultation. Gender, power, and ethnicity in cultural consultation. Consultation and mediation with racialized and marginalized communities. Collaborative care and primary care consultation. Cultural consultation with refugees. A unique guide to challenges and opportunities in contemporary practice, Cultural Consultation will be immediately useful for health care professionals, clinical psychologists, and cultural consultants and provide a versatile knowledge source for years to come.

This book explores the relationship between cultural psychology and aesthetics, by integrating the historical, theoretical and phenomenological perspectives. It offers a comprehensive discussion of the history of aesthetics and psychology from an international perspective, with contributions by leading researchers from Serbia, Austria, Portugal, Norway, Denmark, and Brazil. The first section of the book aims at summarizing the debate of where the song comes from. It discusses undeveloped topics, methodological hints, and epistemological questions in the different areas of contemporary psychological sciences. The second section of the book presents concrete examples of case-studies and methodological issues (the new melodies in psychological research) to stimulate further explorations. The book aims to bring art back into psychology, to provide an understanding for the art of psychology. An Old Melody in a New Song will be of interest to advanced students and researchers in the fields of educational and developmental psychology, cultural psychology, history of ideas, aesthetics, and art-based research

Homicide and rape. Hypertension and ulcers. Road rage and bullying. Numerous social and health problems can be traced to anger and aggression, prime targets for therapy. The ubiquity of anger and the destructive reach of aggression and violence demand not just an expanding palette of treatment options, but also a gamut of targeted measures to accurately assess at-risk clients.  Practitioner’s Guide to Empirically Supported Measures of Anger, Aggression, and Violence organizes basic and detailed information on 130-plus scales, questionnaires, and surveys in a user-friendly format. Background chapters discuss definition and classification issues, and methods of assessing for hostile emotions and injurious behaviors. The main sections describe in depth instruments for screening for the three constructs, covering populations, administration and scoring information, psychometric properties, references, and availability. In addition, a number of measures are reprinted for professional use in therapy or research. Key features of the book:  A detailed chapter on conducting risk assessments. Reviews of anger measures, from the Anger Control Inventory to the Ward Atmosphere Scale. Information on aggression scales, e.g., the Antisocial Personality Questionnaire, the Hypermasculinity Inventory. Overviews of violence measures, including the Abuse Assessment Screen and the Stalking Victimization Survey. Quick-view tables for finding the most appropriate test for a given client or situation. Reproducible measures for clinical or research purposes. For clinicians and practitioners looking to keep their assessment methods up-to-date and seeking new tools for addressing a growing source of concerns, Practitioner’s Guide to Empirically Supported Measures of Anger, Aggression, and Violence is a ready resource that will be turned to often

This book brings together into one edited volume the most compelling rationales for literary reading and health, the best current practices in this area and state of the art research methodologies. It consolidates the findings and insights of this burgeoning field of enquiry across diverse disciplines and groups: psychologists, neurologists, and social scientists; literary scholars, writers and philosophers; medical researchers and practitioners; reading charities and arts organisations. Following introductory chapters on the literary-historical background to reading and health, the book is divided into four key sections. The first part focuses on Practices, showcasing reading interventions and cultures in clinical and community mental health care and in secure settings. This is followed by Research Methodologies, featuring innovative qualitative and quantitative approaches, and by a section covering Theory, with chapters from eminent thinkers in psychiatry, psychology and psychoanalysis. The final part is concerned with Implementation, incorporating perspectives from health professionals, commissioners and reading practitioners. This innovate work explains why reading matters in health and wellbeing, and offers a foundational text to future scholars in the field and to health professionals and policy-makers in relation to the embedding of reading practices in professional health care. Josie Billington is Reader in English Literature and Deputy Director of the Centre for Research into Reading, Literature and Society at the University of Liverpool, UK. She has published widely on Victorian fiction and poetry and on interdisciplinary studies of the value of literary reading for health, including Is Literature Healthy? (2016)

This book explores feminine archetypes and mythological figures in African and European traditions with an underlying goal of describing the foundations of social status for women. The author provides a rich corpus of mythology and tales to illustrate aspects of female and mother-daughter relationships. Diop analyzes the symbolic aspects of maternity and femininity, describing the social meaning of the matrix, breasts, and breastfeeding. A retrospective of female characters in African literature brings an interesting approach to explore the figures of femininity and maternity in society. After an extensive analysis of African mythology and tales, the author proposes a way to integrate them in the clinical psychotherapy as a projective material. The analysis of clinical cases offers an example of how this material can be used in therapy with women from African descent
