Kristine Stiles here considers some of the most notorious art of the second half of the 20th century by artists who use their bodies to address destruction and violence. From war and environmental pollution to racism and sexual assault, she analyses the consequences of trauma as seen in the works of artists such as Marina Abramovic, Pope.L and Chris Burden. Assembling rich intellectual explorations on everything from Paleolithic paintings to the Bible's patriarchal legacies to documentary images of nuclear explosions, she explores how art can provide a distinctive means of understanding trauma, and promote individual and collective healing.

Dementia and Legacies of Colonialism in Fiona McFarlane’s The Night Guest -- The Temporality and Politics of Language Lost and Found. Cinema, Dementia and the Entangled Histories of Singapore -- Forgetting and Remembering in Post-dictatorial Argentina. Tiempo suspendido and the Ethics of Documentary Filmmaking Featuring People Living with Dementia -- Contributors -- Index Memory loss is not always viewed purely as a contingent neurobiological process present in an ageing population; rather, it is frequently related to larger societal issues and political debates. This edited volume examines how different media and genres – novels, auto/biographical writings, documentary as well as fictional films and graphic memoirs – represent dementia for the sake of critical explorations of memory, trauma and contested truths. In ten analytical chapters and one piece of graphic art, the contributors examine the ways in which what might seem to be the individual, ahistorical diseases of dementia are used in contemporary cultural texts to represent and respond to violent historical and political events – ranging from the Holocaust to postcolonial conditions – all of which can prove difficult to remember. Combining approaches from literary studies with insights from memory studies, trauma studies, anthropology, the critical medical humanities and media, film and comics studies, this volume explores the politics of dementia and incites new debates on cultures of remembrance, while remaining attentive to the lived reality of dementia

"Falling After 9/11 provides close readings of post 9/11 figures of falling in such exemplary American texts as DeLillo's novel, Falling Man, Diane Seuss's poem, "Falling Man," Jonathan Safran Foer's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, and Richard Drew's famous photograph of the man falling from the World Trade Center. Considered from the perspective of trauma theory, Falling After 9/11 argues that the apparent failure of these texts to register fully the trauma of the day in fact points to a larger problem in the national tradition: the problem of reference...of how to refer to falling...in the 21st century and beyond"..

Afterword. . “Documenting Trauma in Comics: Traumatic Pasts, Embodied Histories, and Graphic Reportage brings together a diverse group of scholars to offer a new perspective on representations of trauma in graphic narratives. Using primary source comics from a broad geographic and historical scope, this collection focuses on creating relationships between texts, demonstrating not only the global interest in trauma narratives but also the myriad representational techniques that comics can employ. As such, the coordinates by which this work is steered are academically rigorous, contemporary, and highly topical.” --Professor Harriet EH Earle, Sheffield Hallam University “A necessary collection, both for its crucial global scope and for its contribution to how we think about trauma and images.” --Professor Hillary Chute, Northeastern University Why are so many contemporary comics and graphic narratives written as memoirs or documentaries of traumatic events? Is there a specific relationship between the comics form and the documentation and reportage of trauma? How do the interpretive demands made on comics readers shape their relationships with traumatic events? And how does comics’ documentation of traumatic pasts operate across national borders and in different cultural, political, and politicised contexts? The sixteen chapters and three comics included in Documenting Trauma in Comics set out to answer exactly these questions. Drawing on a range of historically and geographically expansive examples, the contributors bring their different perspectives to bear on the tangled and often fraught intersections between trauma studies, comics studies, and theories of documentary practices and processes. The result is a collection that shows how comics is not simply related to trauma, but a generative force that has become central to its remembrance, documentation, and study. Dominic Davies is a Lecturer in the Department of English at City, University of London. Candida Rifkind is a Professor in the Department of English, University of Winnipeg, Canada.
