    Examines the bleak television comedies that illustrate the obsession of the white left with its own anxiety and sufferingAt the same time that right-wing political figures like Donald Trump were elected and reactionary socio-economic policies like Brexit were voted into law, representations of bleakly comic white fragility spread across television screens. American and British programming that featured the abjection of young, middle-class, liberal white people-such as Broad City, Casual, You're the Worst, Catastrophe, Fleabag, and Transparent-proliferated to wide popular acclaim in the 2010s. Taylor Nygaard and Jorie Lagerwey track how these shows of the white left, obsessed with its own anxiety and suffering, are complicit in the rise and maintenance of the far right-particularly in the mobilization, representation, and sustenance of structural white supremacy on television.Nygaard and Lagerwey examine a cycle of dark television comedies, the focus of which are "horrible white people," by putting them in conversation with similar upmarket comedies from creators and casts of color like Insecure, Atlanta, Dear White People, and Master of None. Through their analysis, they demonstrate the ways these non-white-centric shows negotiate prestige TV's dominant aesthetics of whiteness and push back against the centering of white suffering in a time of cultural crisis.Through the lens of media analysis and feminist cultural studies, Nygaard and Lagerwey's book opens up new ways of looking at contemporary television consumption-and the political, cultural, and social repercussions of these "horrible white people" shows, both on- and off-screen

Der Einheit und Stabilität von Gattungen erwachsen jedoch Gefahren aus zwei historischen Kräften: Zum einen kann die kulturelle Evolution über sie hinweggehen und sie obsolet werden lassen. Zum anderen sind wissenschaftliche Klassifizierungen ästhetischer Erscheinungen nicht unveränderlich.Indem sie das Marginale, Periphere und Prekäre fokussieren, werfen die Beiträge des Bandes ein anderes Licht auf die Gattungen, ihre Konzeptualisierung und ihre Evolution. Damit gerät das Prekäre nicht allein der »kleinen« Genres, sondern die konstitutive Prekarität des Gattungskonzepts überhaupt in den Blick Whenever we speak of genres, we usually mean stable categories like opera, the novel or the Western. However from the unity and stability of genres, dangers grow out of two historical forces: on the one hand, cultural evolution can move past them and make them obsolete. On the other hand, academic classifications of aesthetic manifestations are not immutable. Since they focus on the marginal, peripheral and precarious, the essays in this collection throw new light on genres, their conceptualization and their evolution. With this, the precarious moves into view, not just the precarity of »minor« genres, but the precarity of the concept of genre as such

    In recent decades our societies have experienced the steady growth of the precariat, even though the contours of this group still remain somewhat vague. The essay aims at contributing to the specification of the precariat’s definition, making use of the category of common needs. Indeed, this concept is deemed capable of: 1) playing a defining and aggregating function for the realities that populate the precariat; and 2) helping it in the recognition of common demands and claims to counter forms of systemic injustice. The category of common needs directs attention to aspects of the precariat’s condition that are not only related to objective and - so to speak - material factors, but can be traced back to a condition of loneliness, as much psychological as determined by social mechanisms. In the paper, therefore, the identification of a (yet to be broadened) list of common needs is deemed to be a useful tool in combating the state of loneliness of the precariat, as well as contributing to its greater self-awareness.
