    Over the past roughly two decades, the interconnected concepts of reparation, restitution, and commemorative culture have gained renewed momentum – in academic discourse as much as in activist, artistic, and political contexts. This development insists on a critique of the material and systemic conditions of societies and global relations. In their 2018 report on the restitution of looted cultural artifacts, for example, Bénédicte Savoy and Felwine Sarr discuss restitutions in the light of a new ethics of relations. Individual acts of restitution, but also the processes of material and immaterial reparation that go with them, are viewed as mediators in the by definition irreparable legacy of colonialism and its present repercussions. A new ethics of relations might even go beyond anthropocentrism: The destruction of nature in the Anthropocene and the destruction of humanity that is colonialism both require a fundamental questioning of the premises of western modernity and a radically different relationship to the world. The present volume aims to examine different discourses and practices of reparation, bringing together perspectives from cultural studies, memory studies, post- or decolonial studies as well as literary studies. Chapters from these disciplines are complemented by contributions from the fields of philosophy, art, and literature in order to explore the multiple facets of reparation.     While psychiatry and the neurosciences have dismissed the concept of neurosis as too vague for medical purposes, in recent years literary studies have adopted the term by virtue of its abstractness. This volume investigates the verbalization of neurosis in literary and cultural texts. As opposed to the medical diagnostics of neurosis in the individual, the contributions focus on the poetics of neurosis. They indicate how neuroses are still routinely romanticized or vilified, bent to suit aesthetic and narrative choices, and transfigured to illustrate unresolved cultural tensions.

Vor allem Kinder- und Jugendliteraturforschung sowie Literaturdidaktik haben davon profitiert. Doch wie hängen Adoleszenz und Alterität zusammen? Die Beiträger*innen erarbeiten anhand von exemplarischen literatur- und medienwissenschaftlichen Analysen Anknüpfungspunkte zwischen Adoleszenz und interkulturellen sowie postkolonialen Fragestellungen und greifen aktuelle Themen wie z.B. Flucht, Migration, Rassismus oder (post-)koloniale Erfahrungen auf. Von Fatou Diome bis Yoko Tawada, von mehrsprachigen Räumen wie Siebenbürgen bis zur Mährischen Walachei untersuchen sie Texte, Semantiken und kulturelle Praktiken des Übergangs. Obwohl die Idee einer orientalischen Entität ideologiekritisch hinterfragt worden ist, wird der Topos heute nicht nur verklärend als touristisches Reiseziel in Katalogen gepriesen, sondern auch in der aktuellen politischen Situation als Bild des arabischen, orientalischen Anderen massenmedial fortgeschrieben. Die Werke der untersuchten Autoren und Autorinnen der Indischen Diaspora unterscheiden äußerst voneinander, sowohl in thematischer als auch stilistischer Hinsicht. Unter ihnen gibt es Romane und Erzählungen im klassischen Erzählstil von Autoren wie Naipaul, Ghosh, Lahiri, ... hauptsächlich gruppiert um Immigrationsthemen.     Anti-Empire explores how different writers across Lusophone spaces have engaged with imperial and colonial power at its various levels of domination, while imagining alternatives to dominant discourses pertaining to race, ethnicity, culture, gender, sexuality, and class. Guided by a theoretically eclectic approach ranging from Psychoanalysis, Deconstruction, Postcolonial Theory, Queer Theory, and Critical Race Studies, Empire is explored as a spectrum of contemporary global power inaugurated by European expansion and propagated in the postcolonial present through economic, cultural, and political forces. Through the texts analysed, Anti-Empire offers in-depth interrogations of contemporary power in terms of racial politics, gender performance, socio-economic divisions, political structures, and the intersections of these facets of domination and hegemony. By way of grappling with Empire's discursive field and charting new modes of producing meaning in opposition to that of Empire, the texts read from Brazil, Cabo Verde, East Timor, Portugal, and S ao Tom e and Pr incipe open new inquiries for Postcolonial and Decolonial Studies while contributing theoretical debates to the study of Lusophone cultures

    This open access edited volume offers an analysis of the entangled histories of education and development in twentieth-century Africa. It deals with the plurality of actors that competed and collaborated to formulate educational and developmental paradigms and projects: debating their utility and purpose, pondering their necessity and risk, and evaluating their intended and unintended consequences in colonial and postcolonial moments. Since the late nineteenth century, the "educability" of the native was the subject of several debates and experiments: numerous voices, arguments, and agendas emerged, involving multiple institutions and experts, governmental and non-governmental, religious and laic, operating from the corridors of international organizations to the towns and rural villages of Africa.     ger: Klänge weisen in postkolonialer Literatur eine politische Bedeutungsdimension auf. Die literarische Imagination von Klängen hebt verschiedene Machtkonfigurationen in Texten hervor, die einen postkolonialen Hintergrund haben, indem Unterdrückung und Herrschaft, aber auch Widerstand auf einer klanglichen Ebene veranschaulicht werden. Die Dissertation untersucht die politischen Aspekte literarischer Klänge (verstanden als intermodale Referenzen) anhand des Konzepts von Gewalt: Literarische Klänge vermitteln unterschiedliche Gewaltformen (etwa interpersonelle, strukturelle oder epistemische Gewalt) und machen Konflikte durch Themen und Motive greifbar, in denen Hör-Wissen reflektiert und erweitert wird. Die close readings der Fallstudien konzentrieren sich auf narrative, rhetorische und andere literarische Merkmale bei der Inszenierung von Klang und werden von semiotischen Analysen ergänzt, die die Verbindung zwischen Klängen und Gewalt verdeutlichen. Die semiotischen Begriffe werden angewandt, um zu bestimmen, wie sich ein literarischer Klang (als Zeichen) auf Gewalt als dessen Objekt bezieht.Das Korpus besteht aus vier AutorInnen aus verschiedenen sprachlichen und kulturellen Kontexten: Chingiz Aitmatov, J. M. Coetzee, Frankétienne und Jean Rhys. Ihre anglophonen, frankophonen und russophonen Texte sind Gegenstand der Fallstudien zu postkolonialer Literatur. Die Romane problematisieren die Verschränkung zwischen Klangkultur, imperialer Ordnung und kolonialem Erbe, indem sie auf Klangumgebungen, Hörpraktiken und Modi der Klangerzeugung fokussieren. Ein Vergleich zwischen den Texten stellt die Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede hinsichtlich ihrer Klangimaginationen und Inszenierungen von Klängen heraus.Die Dissertation stellt einen Beitrag zu den Literary Sound Studies dar, wobei das Forschungsinteresse an der Schnittstelle zwischen Komparatistik, Sound Studies und Postcolonial Studies liegt. eng: The sensory domain of sound is imbued with political meaning in postcolonial prose fiction. The literary imagination of sound articulates different configurations of power, accentuating sonic manifestations of oppression and domination, but also of resistance and subversion within texts that have a postcolonial background. The thesis examines the political significance of literary sounds (conceptualized as intermodal references) on the basis of the concept of violence: Literary sounds convey varying forms of violence (such as interpersonal, structural and epistemic violence) and make conflicts more palpable by illustrating them through themes and motifs that reflect and also creatively expand sonic knowledge. In the case studies, close-readings focus on narrative, rhetorical and other literary features in the staging of sound, complemented by semiotic analyses of the connection between sound and violence. The semiotic terminology is applied to determine how, as signs, literary sounds relate to violence as their object.The corpus consists of novels by four authors from different linguistic and cultural contexts: Chingiz Aitmatov, J. M. Coetzee, Frankétienne and Jean Rhys. Their Anglophone, Francophone and Russophone texts are the objects of the case studies on postcolonial literature. The chosen novels problematize the entanglement of sound culture with imperial orders and colonial legacies: By exploring auditory environments, listening practices and modes of sound production, they demonstrate a particular aural sensitivity that adds a violent dimension to literary sounds. A comparison of the analyzed texts establishes the similarities and differences in regard to their sonic imaginations and how they stage sounds.Contributing to the research of literary sound studies, the main interest of this thesis lies at the intersection of comparative literary studies, sound studies and postcolonial studies.
