    Das Lehrbuch bietet eine Fülle von Belegen, sehr gut durchdachten Abbildungen und erläuternden Beispielen zur Geschichte des Computers. Der Autor schreibt zu Beginn, dass er wegen seines eigenen Studiums sehr gern Beispiele aus der Biologie verwenden wird. Das tut er und so ist dieser Band insbesondere für Biologie- und auch Medizinstudenten hervorragend geeignet, um sich die entsprechend dargebotenen Mechanismen der Computertechnik als Analogien besonders gut vorstellen zu können. Der Band geht von einfachsten Rechengeräten, etwa dem Abakus und mechanischen Rechenmaschinen aus. Zitzler erläutert Schalter, Relais und Neuronale Verschaltungen. Er gelangt so von Rechenwerken, Hauptspeichern über Software wie Assembler zur Hardware-Anatomie eines Rechners, wo z.B. der BUS mit dem Rückgrat eines Menschen verglichen wird. Von kleinen Netzen geht es bis zum Internet, oft mit doch vielen nützlichen Details. Ein spätes Kapitel zur Problemlösung gibt Hinweise auf Computer-Algorithmen. Man findet stets themenbezogene Literaturhinweise. - Eine neuartige, sehr gut lesbare, aber textreiche Darstellung!
