    The article gives a review of the economic participation of women in the Arab world focusing on their household activities and society's view on it. It then examines the role women play as mobilizers of the labour-force both within and outside the family. It is shown that within the family women have considerable influence through childbearing and through setting an example as participants in the labour force themselves. Outside the family women's influence is determined by the type of their occupation. Women can be found in various key positions (e.g. doctors and teachers) from which they have influence on the quantity and quality of the labour force, as policy-makers however they are very few.     El Principio 10 de la Declaración de Río sobre el Medio Ambiente y el Desarrollo (1992) señala de manera expresa que la mejor manera de tratar las cuestiones ambientales es propiciando de modo oportuno la participación de todos los ciudadanos, en el nivel que corresponda. En este contexto, este documento tiene como objetivo desarrollar el marco jurídico y jurisprudencial del Perú, uno de los países signatarios de dicha Declaración, en materia de derechos de acceso a la información, participación y justicia en asuntos ambientales, con énfasis en el sector minero, de modo de identificar buenas prácticas y lecciones aprendidas en el caso peruano, que contribuyan a mejorar los marcos normativos e institucionales tanto del país como de la región en su conjunto. Resumen .-- Introducción .-- I. Marco legal e institucional que regula el derecho de acceso a la información en el Perú .-- II. Marco legal e institucional que regula el derecho a la participación pública en materia ambiental en la mediana y gran minería .-- III. Das Problem der Regierung von Kontingenz und Unsicherheit erzeugendem Wissen soll bewältigt werden, indem Laien als mündige und lernfähige Bürger adressiert werden. Vor dem Hintergrund der Foucault'schen Philosophie werden in diesem Buch die Diskurse der Wissensgesellschaft und die Praktiken der Partizipation als Techniken der Regierung begriffen und als Strategie innerhalb der neoliberalen Gouvernementalität der Gegenwart eingeordnet

    Luxembourg’s large foreign-born population is a pillar of the country’s prosperity: they have brought skills and knowledge to many sectors of the economy. They also tend to successfully find jobs, with a higher employment rate than natives. However, not all immigrants have done well. The minority from non-EU origin (about 10% of the country’s population) suffers from high unemployment, large gender gaps in activity and below-average incomes. Refugees are particularly vulnerable. Other integration shortcomings go beyond disadvantaged minorities. Pervasive labour market segmentation is well illustrated by the marked under-representation of the foreign-born in public sector jobs. Political participation of immigrants at local level is modest. At school, their children are often put at a disadvantage by an education system which tends to perpetuate socio-economic inequality. The diversity of Luxembourg’s society contributed by immigrants should be seen as an asset for economic growth and well-being. Initiatives such as the diversity charter can help private and public organisations to reap the benefit of diversity through the inclusion of outsiders and the strengthening of social cohesion. Learning the languages of Luxembourg, developing social capital and having foreign qualifications validated are key preconditions for successful integration. Education requires both general equity-enhancing reforms, starting at early childhood, and targeted support to disadvantaged students, including upgraded vocational studies. Furthermore, job matching and social cohesion would benefit from greater immigrant participation in public sector employment and civic life. Avoiding that asylum seekers undergo protracted inactivity is also a concern.     „Responsible Research and Innovation“ (RRI) ist zu einem wichtigen Schlagwort der EU-Forschungspolitik geworden. Das Ziel: Technische Innovationen sollen sich an ethischen und gesellschaftlichen Erfordernissen orientieren und nicht allein durch kommerzielle Interessen bestimmt sein. RRI verlangt daher nach einer frühzeitigen Einbindung der Technikfolgenabschätzung (TA) in Innovationsprozesse. Doch was kann die TA in diesem Rahmen leisten? Und wie tragfähig ist das Konzept von RRI überhaupt?Die in diesem Band versammelten Beiträge zeigen, welche Rolle das Konzept RRI im europäischen Kontext spielt, welche Bezüge es zwischen RRI und TA gibt und wo die Grenzen von RRI liegen. Damit wendet sich dieser Band an Entscheidungsträger in Politik und Industrie, die je unterschiedliche Phasen des Innovationsprozesses begleiten. Schließlich ist das Buch auch für die interessierte Öffentlichkeit von Interesse, denn deren Rolle wird in der RRI besonders hervorgehoben, um gesellschaftlich wünschenswerte Innovationen zu realisieren

    We use novel and unique survey data from Italy to shed light on key questions regarding the measurement of social capital and the use of social capital indicators for empirical work. Our data cover a sample of over 600,000 respondents interviewed between 2000 and 2015. We identify four distinct components of social capital - i) social participation, ii) political participation, iii) trust in others, and iv) trust in institutions - and examine how they relate to each other. We then study how each dimension of social capital relates to various socioeconomic factors both at the individual and the aggregate level, and to various proxies of social capital commonly used in the literature. Finally, building on previous work, we investigate to what extent different dimensions of social capital predict differences in key economic, political, and health outcomes. Our findings support the view that social capital is a multifaceted object with multiple dimensions that, while related, are distinct from each other. Future work should take such multidimensionality into account and carefully consider what measure of social capital to use

    The 1965 Voting Rights Act (VRA) paved the road to Black empowerment. How did southern whites respond? Leveraging newly digitized data on county-level voter registration rates by race between 1956 and 1980, and exploiting pre-determined variation in exposure to the federal intervention, we document that the VRA increases both Black and white political participation. Consistent with the VRA triggering counter-mobilization, the surge in white registrations is concentrated where Black political empowerment is more tangible and salient due to the election of African Americans in county commissions. Additional analysis suggests that the VRA has long-lasting negative effects on whites' racial attitudes

    This paper explores the labor market returns to working on a victorious political campaign. Using unique administrative data from Brazil, we track the earnings and employment of campaign workers before and after close elections spanning nearly 20 years. We identify sizable returns to working for a winning campaign, especially in areas with a large informal sector and for workers connected to newly elected challengers. The returns are concentrated in the public sector, where connected hires are relatively more qualified. Our results suggest a potential upside to patronage as campaign connections create new pathways to public administration for young, high-ability workers
