This master thesis examines so-called 'inscrutable' characters in American short stories belonging to the genre of dark Romanticism in the 19th century with regard to their relative readability. The analysis focuses on three American authors: Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Herman Melville, each of whom deal with themes of mystery, terror, and the fear of the unknown in their tales. American literature in the 19th century was shaped by nationwide turmoil, and the authors' works reflect the young nation?s ordeals as well as their personal struggles. The unreadable characters in their stories are therefore often closely related to elements of the uncanny; they are supernatural and often ambiguous. This thesis seeks to identify unreadable characters in works by Poe, Hawthorne, and Melville, and to provide an analysis of how each author created and maintained inscrutability in their tales. Furthermore, this thesis investigates the effects of the use of such enigmatic characters on the reading process. Thus, the relationship between the reader, the narrator, and the inscrutable protagonist is investigated closely, and a variety of critical opinions are considered. In most of the stories analysed, the reader relies on a first person narrator?s account of a series of events when trying to read the inscrutable character. The thesis therefore examines the reliability of each narrator with regard to whether they clarify or obscure the reader's understanding of the character. In the end, a comparative analysis of such delusive personas is provided; the conclusion is drawn that each author uses different literary techniques to create their ?unreadables?. These elements allow each reader to apply their own approach and interpretation to the texts in question, which therefore leads to different results for the reading experience.

The Figures of Edgar Allan Poe is the first study to address the rhetorical dimensions of Poe’s textual and discursive practices. It argues that Poe is a figure and figurer of the emergence of the modern understanding of literature in the early nineteenth century that resulted from the birth of the romantic author and the so-called ‘death of rhetoric’. Building on accounts of Poe as a skilled navigator of American antebellum print culture, Gero Guttzeit reinterprets Poe as representative of the vital role that transatlantic rhetoric played in antebellum literature. He investigates rhetorical figures of the author in Poe’s critical writings, tales, poems, and lectures to give a new account of Poe’s significance for antebellum literary culture. In so doing, he also proposes a general rhetorical theory of theoretical, poetical, and performative figures of the author. Beyond Poe studies, the book intervenes in current debates on the romantic origins of the modern author and demonstrates that rhetorical theory offers new ways of exploring authorship beyond the nineteenth century

In the nineteenth century, American tourists, scholars, evangelists, writers, and artists flocked to Palestine as part of a "Holy Land mania." Many saw America as a New Israel, a modern nation chosen to do God's work on Earth, and produced a rich variety of inspirational art and literature about their travels in the original promised land, which was then part of Ottoman-controlled Palestine. In American Palestine, Hilton Obenzinger explores two "infidel texts" in this tradition: Herman Melville's Clarel: A Poem and Pilgrimage to the Holy Land (1876) and Mark Twain's The Innocents Abroad: or, The New Pilgrims' Progress (1869). As he shows, these works undermined in very different ways conventional assumptions about America's divine mission. In the darkly philosophical Clarel, Melville found echoes of Palestine's apparent desolation and ruin in his own spiritual doubts and in America's materialism and corruption. Twain's satiric travelogue, by contrast, mocked the romantic naiveté of Americans abroad, noting the incongruity of a "fantastic mob" of "Yanks" in the Holy Land and contrasting their exalted notions of Palestine with its prosaic reality. Obenzinger demonstrates, however, that Melville and Twain nevertheless shared many colonialist and orientalist assumptions of the day, revealed most clearly in their ideas about Arabs, Jews, and Native Americans. Combining keen literary and historical insights and careful attention to the context of other American writings about Palestine, this book throws new light on the construction of American identity in the nineteenth century
