"With her first full-length poetry collection, Warsan Shire introduces us to a young girl, who, in the absence of a nurturing guide, makes her own stumbling way towards womanhood. Drawing from her own life and the lives of loved ones, as well as pop culture and news headlines, Shire finds vivid, unique details in the experiences of refugees and immigrants, mothers and daughters, Black women, and teenage girls. In Shire's hands, lives spring into fullness. This is noisy life: full of music and weeping and surahs and sirens and birds. This is fragrant life: full of blood and perfume and shisha smoke and jasmine and incense. This is polychrome life: full of henna and moonlight and lipstick and turmeric and kohl"--

Ismail Mire (1878-1952?) was a famous Somali poet and Dervish, a dervish soldier and a bard "Ismaaciil Mire Cilmi geesinnimo ayuu ku sheegganaa, gabay quluud leh waa lagu yiqiin, markii looga baahdana talo fiican ayaa looga baxsan jirey. Taariikhda Daraawiisheed, in yarba ha ahaatee, qofkii wax ka yaqaani Ismaaciil Mire wuu garanayaa, kamana dahsoona kaalintii weyneyd ee uu kaga jirey dagaalkii dheeraa ee dhex-maray Daraawiish oo dhinac ah iyo Ingiriis iyo gaashaan-buurtiisii intii u dhexaysey 1899-1920kii. Tan oo ah daabacaaddii labaad, waxaa baalasha buuggaan ku uruursan boqol-iyo-dheeraad maanso oo qaar dheerdheer yihiin, qaar kalena gaaggaaban yihiin oo ay u badan tahay in la kala illoobey oo, iyaga oo dhan, aysan waayaha iyo weriyeyaashu nagu soo simin. Maansooyinka Ismaaciil waxay ku tirsan yihiin saddexdii hab ee raggii hore ay curinta maansada u adeegsan jireen; kuwaas oo kala ah gabayga, geeraarka iyo jiiftada (masafada). In kastoo aan la sheegi karin gabayada mid walba sannadkii ama goortii la tiriyey, haddana waxaan u kala hor-mariyey dhacdooyinka uu gabyaagu midba ku soo qaaday siday u kala horreeyeen, aniga oo taariikhda dunida iyo midda degaankaba miciinsanaaya."--Page 4 of cover
