Accessibility, understood as social integration, has been studied from many perspectives yet, due to our constantly changing environment, the concept is still in flux and needs to be reexamined. Within Translation Studies, audiovisual translation (AVT) has expanded the concept of translation activity and its growth has been exponential. In recent decades, AVT and accessibility studies have developed side by side, and the intersection of both fields has been at the heart of academic research as well as of professional practice. This collective volume showcases nine chapters written by specialists who approach the topic from different, yet complementary perspectives. All of them analyse the production of accessible translated material that requires adaptation to meet the needs and expectations of a multifarious audience, including older people, persons with sensory and cognitive disabilities, and those with limited digital knowledge.

«This work highlights the need for a holistic approach to the confounding issues confronting the region, confronting our age. In reminding us of the many vulnerabilities and vitalities of Oceanian communities and island worlds, it shows the potential for dialogue between disciplines and consilience between academic scholarship and local community understandings. The collection’s clarion call for a new ‘ecosystem of knowledge’ is utterly timely.» (Alexander Mawyer, Director, Center for Pacific Islands Studies, University of Hawai‘i) «This work breaks the barriers imposed by language and distinctive intellectual traditions in presenting a wide-ranging selection of current work from the South Pacific in the humanities, social and natural sciences. Of particular significance is the fact that Francophone as well as Anglophone scholars are represented. This gathering of minds, a meritorious initiative of the University of French Polynesia, is an invitation to ‘think the Pacific’ in the vein of pioneer Oceanian intellectuals like Epeli Hau’ofa and Jean-Marie Tjibaou.» (Eric Waddell, Adjunct Professor, Université Laval, and Chercheur invité, Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD), Nouméa) This work, an initiative of the University of French Polynesia, Tahiti, showcases research collaboration between small island universities in the Pacific. It addresses a number of «big issues» for Oceania which are also big issues for the world, concerning the biosphere and human society, sustainable development and well-being. The authors seek to create an ecosystem of knowledge through a dialogue, in English and French, between the natural sciences, the social sciences and the humanities. The work also brings into perspective academic and traditional knowledge, with a view to enhancing cultural and agricultural practices and the development of public policy. Climate change, environmental degradation and food security are key questions for survival. How can the preservation of cultural heritage, the transmission of native languages and the integration of traditional knowledge into formal education contribute to a harmonious future? How is the phenomenon of violence relevant to an understanding of history, interpersonal relations and social inclusiveness, including for women in the political sphere? The Tongan-Fijian writer Epeli Hau’ofa described Oceania imaginatively as a «Sea of Islands». This volume sees Pacific islands as being interconnected in ways beyond imagining, in which nowhere is remote, where the peripheral has become a decentred centre.

This is the first single volume in either English or Russian on the representation of Pushkin in Yuri Tynianov’s novels. It demonstrates the percipience and originality of Tynianov’s concept of Pushkin’s personality and assesses Tynianov’s contribution to the Soviet historical novel. The approach re-orients the angle of investigation from the study of his novels as historical biographical works with their adherence to chronology and factuality to their study within the generic frameworks of other genres, which allowed Tynianov to create a new, artistically viable form of novel. The author investigates how and why an esteemed Formalist scholar, initially strongly anti-biographical, turned to biographical fiction; contextualizes the significance of his choice of genre and hero in the Soviet literary process of the 1920–30s; and examines theoretical approaches that enabled him to create an illusion of authenticity unprecedented in Pushkin novels. Building her analysis on the theoretical conclusions, she investigates Tynianov’s artistic methods of interpreting the formative influences on Pushkin while focusing on the Formalist techniques of enhanced literariness. Exploration of each of Tynianov’s novels demonstrates what Tynianov believed to be true about the origins and originality of Pushkin’s genius, the nature of historical understanding, and Pushkin’s own historical thinking. Appraising the mythopoeic techniques that Pushkin’s forebears, family and the poet himself employed as means of reconstructing their origins, Rush demonstrates how Tynianov explodes some of the myths of self-representation in which Pushkin’s paternal great-grandfather – and his offspring after him – indulged throughout their lives, and reveals how these myths paralleled Pushkin’s anxieties concerning race and class. The study reveals the ways in which Tynianov, while grappling with and overrunning the monumentalizing national Pushkin myth, subverted the generic expectations of the historical novel, broke away from established tradition and elevated his novel to the level of «serious» literature.

The period from the 1850s to the 1890s in Paris marked a key turning point for poets and composers, as they grappled with the new ways in which poetry and music could intersect. Under the particular conditions of the time and place, both art forms underwent significant developments which challenged the status of each form. In both creative and critical work from this era, poets and composers offered tantalising but problematic insights into «musical» poetry and «poetic» music. The central issue examined in this book is that of what happens to poetry when it encounters music, especially as song. The author places Baudelaire’s famous sonnet «La Mort des amants» at the heart of the analysis, tracing its transposition into song by a succession of both amateur and professional composers, examining works by Villiers de l’Isle-Adam, Serpette, Rollinat, Debussy and Charpentier, as well as an extraordinary parodic song version by Valade and Verlaine.A companion website offers recordings of each of the songs analysed in this book.

This new study provides fresh readings of Thomas Hardy’s work and illuminates the social and cultural history of dress in the nineteenth century. The book argues that Hardy had a more detailed and acute understanding of the importance of dress in forming and regulating personal identity and social relations than any other writer of his time. Structured thematically, it takes into account both nineteenth-century and modern theoretical approaches to the significance of what we wear. The author gives an extended analysis of individual works by Hardy, showing, for example, that A Pair of Blue Eyes is central to the study of the function of clothing in the expression and perception of sexuality. The Hand of Ethelberta, The Mayor of Casterbridge, Tess of the d’Urbervilles and The Woodlanders are examined in order to show the extent to which dress obscures or reveals the nature of the self. Hardy’s other novels, as well as the short stories and poems, are used to confirm the centrality of dress and clothing in Hardy’s work. The book also raises issues such as the gendering of dress, cross-dressing, work clothes and working with clothes, dress and the environment, the symbolism of colour in clothes, and the dress conventions relating to death.
