Main description: Robert Storey's lively and gracefully written study of Pierrot is the first scholarly history of this fascinating popular figure. Unlike previous studies of commedia dell'arte characters; this book focuses as much on Pierrot as a literary metaphor and mask as on the roles and dimensions of his stage character.Originally published in 1978.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These paperback editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905

Since ancient times, the melancholy of thinkers, writers and artists has been declared as both a thorn in their side and a source of their creative inspiration. This book reveals that, in his works, Hugo von Hofmannsthal draws on representations and evaluations of this phenomenon, which stem from a historical discourse that lasted over 2500 years. This collection of depictions and appraisals sheds light on the idea of melancholy being both inspirational and destructive in terms of artistic output. This study focuses on groundbreaking texts by Robert Burton, John Milton and Walter Benjamin as well as melancholic protagonists and peripheral characters, who appear in the guise of Hamlet, Pierrot and misanthropes. Melancholy can also be found in pictures and gestures, which Hofmannsthal’s texts, particularly his numerous textual fragments, draw on. Consequently, this study highlights a network of cross-medium and intertextual relations between literature, the fine arts and dance, which convey the ambiguous nature of melancholy. This book was awarded the Gerhart Baumann Prize in 2019.

Academic research has paid little attention to the importance of the figure of Pierrot in García Lorca's imagery and, above all, in his literary and personal life. An image of marginality and failure, Pierrot was soon taken over by Spanish intellectuals of the early twentieth century as a representation of the bohemian spirit and, corresponding to his marginal status in matters of love, as a symbol of furtive desires experienced by those whose sexuality had to remain silent. Consequently, García Lorca, as Pierrot, needs a mask to cover his identity, facing perpetual failure in his relentless pursuit of the other. As can be seen already from the poems, prose and plays of his youth, García Lorca outlines in Pierrot his innermost self, a trend that willinue in the aforementioned series of drawings and some of his major pieces, such as El público. Pierrot / Lorca: White Carnival of Black Desire aims, from a multidisciplinary perspective, to open new critical readings of both Garcí work and some episodes of his life; as with, for example, his relationship with Salvador Dalí, which can be presented in theatrical terms: Harlequin (Dalí) / Pierrot (García Lorca).
