    Wie ein Mann zog sie in den Krieg und führte die Franzosen zum Sieg – so erzählen sowohl Chroniken, Briefe, Prozess­akten des 15. Jahrhunderts als auch Filme aus allen ­Abschnitten der Kinogeschichte von Jeanne d’Arc. Obwohl die Gender-­Konventionen spätmittelalterlicher Texte ebenso wie des Mainstream-Films bis gegen Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts eine ­kämpferische Heldin nicht vorsehen. Wie kann es sein, dass dennoch immer wieder von Jeanne die Rede ist? Ausgestattet mit Instrumenten aus dem Werkzeugkasten des Michel ­Foucault erkundet Morten Kansteiner die diskursiven Konstellationen, die einer Heldin Rückhalt geben: die Verehrung von Heiligen, Nationalhelden und Stars – Kontexte, die einer aktiven Frauenfigur wachsende Möglichkeiten bieten, aber auch spezifische Beschränkungen auferlegen.

    Confrontations brings, together in one volume six essays by the distinguished critic René Wellek. Five have been previously published but are now practically unobtainable; one, “German and English Romanticism: A Confrontation,” is previously unpublished. The books roam emphasis is on the spread of German philosophical and critical ideas to England and the United States. The first essay examines the differences between German and English Romanticism. In the following essays, Professor Wellek examines the Impact of German philosophy and literary theory on the Ideas of Carlyle and De Quincey. In the final two essays, he considers attitudes held by New England Transcendentalists, especially Emerson, toward German philosophy.Originally published in 1965.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These paperback editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback editions.     Friedrich der Große erweist sich in seinem schriftstellerischen Werk sowie in seinen literarisch-philosophischen Briefwechseln, vor allem mit Voltaire, als ein unermüdlicher und höchst eigenwilliger Leser der einschlägigen französischsprachigen Debattenbeiträge der westeuropäischen Aufklärung. Die klassische Literatur des Jahrhunderts Ludwig XIV. betrachtete er als vorbildlich. Zeitlebens befasste er sich mit den in französischer Sprache zugänglichen antiken Autoren philosophischer, historiographischer, poetischer Werke und eignete sich die einschlägigen zeitgenössischen Geschichtswerke im Zeichen der Aufklärung an. Seine Werke zeigen: Friedrich II. war ein für das 18. Jahrhundert geradezu typischer Leser und Autor. Seine Werke verfasste er in Auseinandersetzung mit anderen Werken und als Antwort auf offene Fragen seiner Zeit. Kritik und Kommunikation sind die zentralen Schlüsselbegriffe dieses Autors, der seine Rolle als selbstbewusster Leser bewusst inszenierte, wie seine ‚Lesewelten‘ und Schriften mit den zahlreichen intertextuellen Referenzen deutlich machen. Die Beiträge des Bandes beleuchten aus unterschiedlichen disziplinären Perspektiven die Quellen-, Referenz- und Lieblingstexte des Intellektuellen auf dem preußischen Thron und rekonstruieren seine Lektürehorizonte, die für seinen Standpunkt als Schriftsteller prägend sind. Erörtert werden seine historiographischen, philosophisch-kulturkritischen, militärischen Schriften ebenso wie seine Dichtungen und seine Korrespondenz, die in den Gesamtzusammenhang der zeitgenössischen Aufklärungsdebatten gestellt werden. Dabei wird nachvollziehbar, warum Friedrich II. sich als ein europäischer Autor französischer Sprache verstand, der stets das europäische, an der lebhaften Debattenkultur des 18. Jahrhunderts interessierte Publikum vor Augen hatte.

    In the mid 18th century an important reorientation became discernible in Enlightenment discourse. One-sided rationalism was replaced by a conception of the 'whole person' extending its purview to sensual perception and sensibility as an experiential domain of Reason. Against this background, 13 scholars from various disciplines examine what effects this anthropological turn had on utopian literature and the forms of landscape gardening and architecture influenced by it. A remarkable feature of this joint undertaking is that it is the first of its kind to take an interdisciplinary perspective on this paradigmatic change and its implications. Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts fand im Diskurs der Aufklärung eine bedeutsame Umorientierung statt. Der einseitige Rationalismus wurde abgelöst durch eine Konzeption des 'Ganzen Menschen', die nun auch seine Sinnlichkeit als Erfahrungsraum der Vernunft zum Gegenstand hatte. Vor diesem Hintergrund untersuchen 13 Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler verschiedener Fachdisziplinen in den Beiträgen dieses Bandes, wie sich die anthropologische Wende auf die utopische Literatur sowie die von ihr beeinflußte Landschaftsgestaltung und Architektur ausgewirkt hat. Der vorliegende Versuch besticht gerade dadurch, daß erstmals der gesamte Paradigmenwechsel in interdisziplinärer Zusammenschau vorgestellt wird.

    The Dissertation of 1792 on the Origin of Evil -- Schelling’s Timæus -- The Essay on the Possibility of a Form of All Philosophy (1794) -- The Opposition Between the Unconditional -- The Dramatization of Contrast -- The Paradox of Opposition -- Philosophy of Nature -- The System of Transcendental Idealism (1800) -- Epilogue on Earth. This book is not a merely historical reconstruction of Schelling’s thought; its main goal is to provide a contribution for a better comprehension of the importance of the philosophical quest of the young German philosopher from within, which represents a turning point for the whole thought of modernity. I did not describe the various fields of Schelling’s work, but I pointed out the central position of his Aesthetics, through the analysis of the inner mechanisms of his concepts. This mechanism, in my opinion, shows the reason why an Aesthetic philosophy is possible, and why its origin can be traced to Kant’s Aesthetics (particularly in Kant’s Critique of Judgement) and in the speculations of the early post-Kantian philosophy. The young Schelling’s philosophical problems precede his encounter with Fichte’s philosophy. Schelling discovers these problems, related to Plato, Aristotle, Spinoza, Wolff, Leibniz and Kant, in the protestant college of the Stift in Tübingen. Fichte confirmed the necessity of an urgent reform of transcendental philosophy, and offered to the young philosopher a philosophical dictionary and an orientation. Schelling exploited these resources with a great degree of autonomy, independence and originality. In these years Hölderlin’s influence on Schelling was much greater. Schelling’s and Hölderlin’s speculations, in these crucial years, were tightly connected.
