    Deutschsprachige Gegenwartsliteratur über New York zeichnet sich durch zwei diskursive Komplexe aus: das Verhältnis von Subjekt und Metropole bzw. von Alter und Neuer Welt. Beide gehören zu den gängigen Wahrnehmungs- und Deutungsmustern deutscher Autoren. In diesen Komplexen ist das Motiv der Grenze von vorrangiger Bedeutung: Der Ort zwischen Subjekt und New York, zwischen Altern und Neuer Welt wird in den Texten gesichert, aufgelöst oder überschritten. In seiner diskursanalytisch angelegten, auf postkoloniale Theorien rekurrierenden Studie analysiert Christof Hamann dieses Motiv der Grenze in ausgewählten Romanen und Reiseberichten und zeigt, wie es für stereotype ebenso wie für differenzierte New-York-Repräsentationen zentral ist. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf dem thematisierten Repertoire, das insbesondere die Materialität und die kulturelle Heterogenität New Yorks umfasst, und den spezifischen Strategien (z.B. Perspektiven, Symbolisierungen, Metonymien, intertextuelle Verweise), durch die das Repertoire in den Texten realisiert wird

    This book theoretically defines and linguistically analyses the popular notion that poetry is ‘difficult’ - hard to read, hard to understand, hard to engage with. It is the first work to offer a stylistic and cognitive model that sheds new light on the mechanisms of difficulty, as well as on its range of potential effects. Its eight chapters are organised into two thematic parts. The first traces the history of difficulty, surveys its main scholarly traditions, addresses related themes - from elitism to obscurity, from abstraction to intentionality - and introduces a wide array of analytical tools from literary theory and cognitive psychology. These tools are then consistently applied in the second part, which includes several extended analyses of poems by canonical modernists such as Ezra Pound, Wallace Stevens and Hart Crane, alongside those of postmodernist innovators such as Geoffrey Hill, Susan Howe and Charles Bernstein, among others.     1919 hat das Preußische Ministerium für Wissenschaft, Kunst und Volksbildung die Akte "Einsteins Relativitätstheorie" angelegt. Sie wurde 1961 vom Autor wiederentdeckt und zusammen mit anderen inzwischen identifizierten Einstein-Akten aus deutschen Archiven zum Quellmaterial für dieses faszinierende Buch. Die Neuauflage kommentiert aufgrund akribischer Studien von 1600 Akten Einsteins FBI-Akte der Jahre 1950 - 1955 und legt bisher unbekanntes Material zu Einsteins angeblichen Kontakten zur KPD und Komintern vor. Neu ist auch die gründliche Studie zu Einsteins Mitarbeit in der Völkerbund-Kommission, die sich auf Archivstudien in Genf stützt. Das Buch zeichnet das Einsteinbild in der Politik und der Wissenschaftspolitik Deutschlands nach. Der Bogen spannt sich von seiner Berufung als Forscher nach Berlin über seine Rolle, nach dem 1. Weltkrieg den "Boykott der deutschen Wissenschaft" durch das Ausland überwinden zu helfen, bis zu seiner Rolle als Zielscheibe der Angriffe gegen die "jüdische Physik" im Inland. Es füllt damit eine wichtige Lücke in der Einsteinliteratur und trägt Neues zum besseren Verstehen für Einsteins rigorosen Bruch mit Deutschland bei

    Für die Beurteilung umweltpolitischer Maßnahmen müssen neben dem Grad der Zielerreichung auch die Effekte im ökonomischen und ökologisch-technischen Gesamtsystem prognostiziert werden. Dazu haben sich disaggregierte makroökonometrische Modelle als besonders nützlich erwiesen. In einem vom Umweltbundesamt initiierten Projekt wurden erstmals im deutschsprachigen Raum zwei verschiedene Modelle parallel benutzt. Die Zuverlässigkeit wurde dadurch erheblich verbessert. Das Modell PANTA RHEI der GWS (Osnabrück) und der Modellverbund des RWI (Essen) wurden um die Umweltbereiche Wasser, Klima, Luft und Boden erweitert und dann zur Simulation folgender umweltpolitischer Maßnahmen eingesetzt: Ökosteuer, Flächensteuer (jeweils verschiedene Varianten), Flächenangebots-Beschränkung, CO2-Steuer. Das Buch enthält die Beschreibung der Modellstrukturen, die Darstellung der Simulationen und eine vergleichende Diskussion der Ergebnisse

    This book presents a comprehensive and systematic study of the narrative history and narrative methods of Chinese and Western popular fiction from the perspectives of narratology, comparative literature, and art and literature studies by adopting the methodology of parallel comparison. The book is a pioneering work that systematically investigates the similarities and differences between Chinese and Western popular fiction, and traces the root causes leading to the differences.     This book brings together the work of several scholars to shed light on the Argentine author Jorge Luis Borges' complex relationship with language and reality. A critical assumption driving the work is that there is, as Jaime Alazraki has put it, 'a genuine effort to overcome the narrowness that Western tradition has imposed as a master and measure of reality' in Borges' writing. That narrowness is in large measure a consequence of the chronic influence of positivist approaches to reality that rely on empirical evidence for any authentication of what is 'real'. This study shows that, in opposition to such restrictions, Borges saw in fiction, in literature, the most viable means of discussing reality in a pragmatic manner.     U.S. Latinx Literature in Spanish remains an understudied field despite its large and vibrant corpus. This is partly due to the erroneous impression that this literature is only written in English, and partly due to traditional educational programs focusing on English texts to include non-Spanish speakers and non-Latinx students. This has created a vacuum in research about Latinx literary production in Spanish, leaving the contemporary field wide open for exploration. This volume fills this space by bringing contemporary U.S. Latinx literature in Spanish to the forefront of the field. The essays focus on literary production post-1960 and examine texts by authors from different backgrounds writing from the U.S., providing readers with an opportunity to explore new texts in Spanish within U.S. Latinx literature, and a departure point for starting a meaningful critical discourse about what it means to write and publish in Spanish in the U.S. Through exploring literary production in a language that is both emotionally and politically charged for authors, the academia, and the U.S., this book challenges and enhances our understanding of the term ‘Americas’ 1. Jahrhunderts auf und schließt daraus auf sein Lebenswerk, den „Mann ohne Eigenschaften“. Dabei soll auf den Wiener Kreis und seine erkenntnistheoretischen Debatten im Rahmen der Modernisierung der (Natur-) Wissenschaften eine parallele Reflexion des Umgangs mit der Rationalität und der Rationalitätskritik hingezeigt werden, die als Kontrastfolie für eine Deutung von Musils (Selbst-) Positionierung gegenüber der modernen Rationalität herangezogen wird. Arslan regt dazu an Musils Werk und seine poetologischen Kategorien wie z.B. die Dichotomie „ratioïd/nicht-ratioïd“ oder den „Möglichkeitssinn“ unter dem Aspekt der Ideen und Debatten des Wiener Kreises zu diskutieren, bzw. dazu anregen, intensiveren und intertextuellen Forschungen nachzugehen.

    Deutschsprachige Gegenwartsliteratur über New York zeichnet sich durch zwei diskursive Komplexe aus: das Verhältnis von Subjekt und Metropole bzw. von Alter und Neuer Welt. Beide gehören zu den gängigen Wahrnehmungs- und Deutungsmustern deutscher Autoren. In diesen Komplexen ist das Motiv der Grenze von vorrangiger Bedeutung: Der Ort zwischen Subjekt und New York, zwischen Altern und Neuer Welt wird in den Texten gesichert, aufgelöst oder überschritten. In seiner diskursanalytisch angelegten, auf postkoloniale Theorien rekurrierenden Studie analysiert Christof Hamann dieses Motiv der Grenze in ausgewählten Romanen und Reiseberichten und zeigt, wie es für stereotype ebenso wie für differenzierte New-York-Repräsentationen zentral ist. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf dem thematisierten Repertoire, das insbesondere die Materialität und die kulturelle Heterogenität New Yorks umfasst, und den spezifischen Strategien (z.B. Perspektiven, Symbolisierungen, Metonymien, intertextuelle Verweise), durch die das Repertoire in den Texten realisiert wird
