"Drawing on more than 100 unpublished photographs, including unseen images of some of the most famous and infamous Berlin clubs of the 1920s, Party! Party!! Party!!! depicts the Weimar Republic through the people who partied and the places they partied in--from living rooms and bedrooms to the underground and tourist-filled clubs and music halls of Berlin. The defeat of the German Empire in World War I meant that the newly formed Weimar Republic was all but bankrupt, facing impossible debt and prey to violent revolution from both left and right. The poor were particularly vulnerable. Any new day could bring disease, unemployment or crime. This precariousness of existence gave rise, in some, to a frantic desire to live in the moment--to celebrate, or escape reality. An exploration of decadence, sexuality and indulgence went alongside an innocence of the consequences of fascism or communism. Life, for many, became a kind of feast during a time of plague as Germany in the 1920s conducted a glorious and futileexperiment in the art of partying. Party! Party!! Party!!! is a moving testimony to this celebratory spirit."--

The early 1990s: Werner Amann’s Kein Morgen (No Tomorrow) brings together photographs of parties, raves, and afterhours clubs. The faces the photographer captures reflect the ecstasy of a moment of awakening, a glimmer of autonomy and freedom. The pictures were taken in Berlin, Frankfurt, Dortmund, New York, Zurich, Paris, and Riccione, in clubs like Omen, Tresor, E-Werk, Limelight, Tunnel, and Sound Factory as well as raves such as Mayday and the Berlin Love Parade. Leif Rand’s short texts for Kein Morgen look back at this period from the vantage point of today, a quarter of a century later. We are left with an abiding sense of a historical moment of understanding and affinity

Go partying with Ingvar Kenne that has visited Bachelor & Spinster Balls across Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and Northern Territory in Australia! 00In a letter to author Tim Winton, Ingvar Kenne writes: ?The B&S Balls are uniquely Australian, but to me, at the bottom of it lies this universal thing. Youth taking control of their journey in a need to break with authority in their lives, and consequently abandon that control. Completely. We have lost what older cultures gifts their youth with, as a mean to both break and bond when transiting to man and woman hood, through initiating ceremonies. In Western societies it seems to be similar solutions for youth across continents, although with a different front. In the US it?s Springbreak or Burning man, in Sweden we have crazy midsummer and crayfish parties where things regularly gets completely chaotic. All fuelled with alcohol and various substances to help. It has been the tradition for so long it has become a new norm.?0

"Leading international scholars explore the party's significance to Modernism. Have you ever been struck by the number of parties in Modernist literature? Mrs. Ramsay drowns in anguish at the dinner-party she gives in Woolf's To The Lighthouse. Death is a guest in Katherine Mansfield's 'The Garden Party'. Politics sour the evening party in Joyce's 'The Dead'. Have you also noticed the role played by parties in the public intellectual culture of Modernism? A party held in London by Amy Lowell on 17 July 1914, attended by Ezra Pound, Ford Madox Ford, H.D. and Richard Aldington, degenerated into an argument over the nature of Imagism. On 18 May 1922, Proust, Joyce, Picasso, Stravinsky and Diaghilev met at a post-ballet party at Paris's Hotel Majestic: an unrepeatable encounter between Modernism's leading figures. In The Modernist Party, internationally distinguished scholars explore the party both as a literary device and as a social setting in which the movement's creative values were developed."--Publishers website
