Introduction -- 1. Legacies of Erotic Transformation: Feminism and Revolution -- 2. Burning Problems of Our Time: Revolution, Erotic Ethics, and Political Spirituality -- 3. An Other Future: The Erotics of Revolution, The Psychosis of Colonialism, and the Haunting Promise of a New Humanity -- 4. Undertaking Man, Making the Human: Toward a New Ceremony -- Conclusion. This book reaffirms what is most basic in feminism : the attack on the "universality" and sovereignty of Man , but contends that the only way this can mean anything other than pessimistic rhetoric is to embrace human agency and the struggle against colonialism and capitalism. In a series of "creolized" readings , Foucault with Ali Shari'ati, Lacan with Fanon, and Spinoza with Sylvia Wynter , the authors demonstrate what is at stake in the ongoing debate between humanism and posthumanism, putting this debate in the context of contemporary global crises and the possibilities of revolution.

Getting started in using the Internet -- Political science and the Internet -- Elections -- Political parties -- Prime ministers and heads of state Parliaments -- Government departments and publications -- Political science education -- Keeping up to date This book is a practical guide to using the Internet for political science research. The growth of the Internet means that an increasing amount of political information is becoming available on the web; however, it can often be difficult for users to locate high quality resources. This book shows the reader how to develop effective Internet searching strategies and indicates what is available online. It covers some of the key political science areas, including elections, parliamentary information and political parties, showing how to successively locate and evaluate Internet resources. The book covers political research mainly in the UK, and the USA

The British-born writer made his name on Fleet Street, where he coined the term "The Establishment," sparred in print with the likes of Kenneth Tynan, and caroused with Kingsley Amis, among many others. In America his writing found a home in the pages of the New Yorker and other top magazines and newspapers. When he died, he was remembered as "quite simply the best political journalist, writing in English, in the last fifty years."Remarkable for their prescience and relevance, Fairlie's essays celebrate Winston Churchill, old-fashioned bathtubs, and American empire; they ridicule Republicans who think they are conservatives and yuppies who want to live forever. Fairlie is caustic, controversial, and unwavering--especially when attacking his employers. With an introduction by Jeremy McCarter, Bite the Hand That Feeds You restores a compelling voice that, among its many virtues, helps Americans appreciate their country anew

In this new text, Mark Mattern offers a unique alternative to the traditional approaches to the study and teaching of political philosophy. Rather than approaching it solely as a world of abstractions, Putting Ideas to Work emphasizes its practical task. Political ideas drawn from historical and analytical political philosophy are used to help rethink current public problems and imagine potential solutions to them

This volume provides an introduction to the politics of the five key southeast Asian states - Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines - and is intended as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate students taking courses on this subject. Using a comparative politics and political economy perspective, the author focuses in particular on the degree of democracy in the five countries, arguing that in all the countries considered democracy is, to varying degrees, imperfect. The book synthesises a wide range of scholarship, and presents the material in a concise and accessible

For over two hundred years the domination of some countries by others has been intrinsic to international relations, with national economic and political strength viewed as essential to a nation's survival and global position. Mastering Space identifies the essential features of this 'state-centredness' and suggests an optimistic alternative more in keeping with the contemporary post-Cold War climate. Drawing on recent geopolitical thinking, the authors claim that the dynamism of the international political economy has been obscured through excessive attention to the state as an unchanging actor

This book provides a solution to the ecological inference problem, which has plagued users of statistical methods for over 75 years: How can researchers reliably infer individual-level behavior from aggregate (ecological) data? In political science, this question arises when individual-level surveys are unavailable (for instance, local or comparative electoral politics), unreliable (racial politics), insufficient (political geography), or infeasible (political history). This ecological inference problem also confronts researchers in numerous areas of major significance in public policy, and other academic disciplines, ranging from epidemiology and marketing to sociology and quantitative history. Although many have attempted to make such cross-level inferences, scholars agree that all existing methods yield very inaccurate conclusions about the world. In this volume, Gary King lays out a unique - and reliable - solution to this venerable problem

In a globalized world exposed to ever more dramatic dangers, the established legal order enters into crisis and the rhetoric of fear is deployed in order to legitimate states of exception. Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben has widely elaborated on the historical effects of the juridical concept of the state of exception, recalling the definition formulated by German legal theorist Carl Schmitt. The state of exception presents itself as an inherently elusive phenomenon, a juridical no-man's

"This project links the engagement of Black nationalist activism to artistic experimentation in recent African American literature, visual art, and film. GerShun Avilez argues that the ideology of modern Black nationalism functions as a dominant means for artistic and theoretical experimentation in African-American literary and visual artwork in the late twentieth century and into the twenty-first. The project provides a new genealogy of contemporary African American artistic production while also shedding new light on the Black Arts Movement (1965-1975) and placing emphasis on how questions of gender and sexuality guide the artistic experimentation discussed throughout the work. More specifically, Avilez unravels how the artistic production of the Black Arts era provides a set of critical methodologies and paradigms rooted in the disidentification with Black nationalist discourses, which gives rise to a subjectivity Avilez refers to as aesthetic radicalism. This term describes the engaged critique of nationalist rhetoric that appears prominently during the 1960s and that continues to offer novel means for expressing Black intimacy and embodiment and producing experimental works of art and innovate artistic methods.--Provided by publisher

"Discusses the origins and cultural history of the Theravada Buddhist ideals behind the Thai institution of monarchy. Since the 2006 coup d'etat, Thailand has been riven by two opposing political visions: one which aspires to a modern democracy and the rule of law, and another which holds to the traditional conception of a kingdom ruled by an exemplary Buddhist monarch. Thailand has one of the world's largest populations of observant Buddhists and one of its last politically active monarchies. This book examines the Theravada Buddhist foundations of Thailand's longstanding institution of monarchy. Patrick Jory states that the storehouse of monarchical ideology is to be found in the popular literary genre known as the Jatakas, tales of the Buddha's past lives. The best-known of these, the Vessantara Jataka, disseminated an ideal of an infinitely compassionate prince as a bodhisatta or future Buddha--an ideal which remains influential in Thailand today. Using primary and secondary source materials largely unknown in Western scholarship, Jory traces the history of the Vessantara Jataka and its political-cultural importance from the ancient to the modern period. Although pressures from European colonial powers and Buddhist reformers led eventually to a revised political conception of the monarchy, the older Buddhist ideal of kingship has yet endured. Patrick Jory is Senior Lecturer in Southeast Asian History at the University of Queensland and the editor of Ghosts of the Past in Southern Thailand: Essays on the History and Historiography of Patani"--Provided by publisher

"In Ranciere's Sentiments Davide Panagia explores Jacques Ranciere's aesthetics of politics as it informs his radical democratic theory of participation. Attending to diverse practices of everyday living and doing--of form, style, and scenography--in Ranciere's writings, Panagia characterizes Ranciere as a sentimental thinker for whom the aesthetic is indistinguishable from the political. Rather than providing prescriptions for political judgment and action, Ranciere focuses on how sensibilities and perceptions constitute dynamic relations between persons and the worlds they create. Panagia traces this approach by examining Ranciere's modernist sensibilities, his theory of radical mediation, the influence of Gustave Flaubert on Ranciere's literary voice, and how Ranciere juxtaposes seemingly incompatible objects and phenomena to create moments of sensorial disorientation. The power of Ranciere's work, Panagia demonstrates, lies in its ability to leave readers with a disjunctive sensibility of the world and what political thinking is and can be."--

"This study offers a clear, concise introduction to the Fascist-era practice, know as confino, of exiling antifascist dissidents to parts of Italy far from the dissidents' homes, often on islands or in tiny inland villages. The book is organised in two sections. Part one provides a case study of the political colony on the island of Lipari and a historical overview of internal exile. Part two focuses on representations of confinement in literature and film. It examines the varieties of self-expression (e.g. memoirs, letters and literature) used by prisoners to describe their experiences, investigates how filmmakers interpret these events, places and people, and explores how film portrays the repression of homosexuality. A timely examination of the birthplace of European federalism, the book also contributes to our understanding of the legacy of confinement from both national and European perspectives."--Provided by publisher Introduction -- Part I: Context and history of internal exile -- 1. The growing debate over British national identity, and the place of ""Englishness"" within it, raises crucial questions about multiculturalism, postimperial culture and identity, and the past and future histories of globalization. However, discussions of Englishness have too often been limited by insular conceptions of national literature, culture, and history, which serve to erase or marginalize the colonial and postcolonial locations in which British national identity has been articulated. This volume breaks new ground by drawing together a range of disciplinary approaches in order to res
