Abrirlo, cerrarlo y volver a abrirlo.

"Fleeing communist Budapest by air balloon, a wrestler tries to reinvent himself in Canada. On a formal invitation from the Party's General Secretary, a Belgian bureaucrat "defects" to communist Hungary, chasing the dream of a better world. Meanwhile, a provocateur filmmaker drinks and blasts his way to a final, celluloid confrontation with fascism, while an enfant terrible philosopher works on his prophetic, posthumously panned masterpiece, Dyschrony. These are among the decadent and absurd characters who hover around the promise and failure of utopia across the pages of Ghost Geographies. A polyphonic descendant of Kadare, Bolaño, and Sebald, Tamas Dobozy masterfully traces and thwarts the porous borders between fact, fiction, ideology, history and humor."--Back cover

"The 14 stories in Exit Strategies explore the subtleties of memory and storytelling, masterfully creating the universal picture from the quotidian details. These stories do not shy away from difficult truths: a former actuary with a head injury which has robbed her of her mental acuity takes a job caring for a defiant farmer who is facing the decline of his body and his property; an elderly Belgian woman refuses to continue a road trip in BC when her soon-to-be-Canadian son and his dollhouse-obsessed girlfriend stop to help a stranded motorist; an intellectually disabled woman kidnaps three Black children and has the happiest day of her life. This collection gives voice to characters who are not always heard."--

Hazel & Christopher --Obsolution --Perfect places --Obsolution --Couldn't hear you talk anymore --Obsolution --Couldn't hear you talk anymore --Obsolution --Rose City, city of roses --Obsolution --Enough trouble --Floodway. "Centring transgender women seeking stable, adult lives, A Dream of a Woman finds quiet truths in prairie high-rises and New York warehouses, and in freezing Canadian winters and drizzly Oregon days. In 'Hazel and Christopher,' two childhood friends reconnect as adults after one of them has transitioned. In 'Perfect Places,' a woman grapples with undesirability as she navigates fetish play with a man. In 'Couldn't Hear You Talk Anymore,' the narrator reflects on her tumultuous life and what might have been as she recalls tender moments with another trans woman. An ethereal meditation on partnership, sex, addiction, romance, groundedness, and love, the stories in A Dream of a Woman buzz with quiet intensity and the intimate complexities of being human."--

Crooked man --Other kingdom --Doc --Householders --Handful of dust --Beautiful bare room --Travellers --Pilgrims --Piss and straw. "Linked short stories about families, nascent queers, and self-deluded utopians explore the moral ordinary strangeness in their characters' overlapping lives. A woman impersonates a nun online, with unexpected consequences. In a gentrifying neighborhood, tensions escalate around two events planned for the same day. The barista girlfriend of a tech billionaire survives a zombie apocalypse only to face spending her life with the paranoid super-rich. The linked stories in Householders move effortlessly between the commonplace and the fantastic: from a university campus, to an underground bunker, to a commune in the woods, to Toronto and back again, and mine the moral hazards inherent in all the ways we try and fail to save each other and ourselves."--

Box Sets -- The Curfew -- Life Without Children -- Gone -- Nurse -- Masks -- The Charger -- The Funeral -- Worms -- The Five Lamps. "A brilliantly warm, witty and moving portrait of our pandemic lives, told in ten heart-rending and uplifting short stories. Love and marriage. Children and family. Death and grief. Life touches everyone the same. But living under lockdown, it changes us alone. In these ten, beautifully moving short stories, Booker Prize-winner Roddy Doyle paints a collective portrait of our strange times. A man abroad wanders the stag-and-hen-strewn streets of Newcastle, as news of the virus at home asks him to question his next move. An exhausted nurse struggles to let go, having lost a much-loved patient in isolation. A middle-aged son, barred from his mother's funeral, wakes to an oncoming hangover of regret. Told with Doyle's signature warmth, wit and extraordinary eye for the richness that underpins the quiet of our lives, Life Without Children cuts to the heart of how we are all navigating loss, loneliness and the shifting of history underneath our feet."--

"At once light and aching, BEFORE STONEWALL gives voice to a generation of men whose homosexuality forced them into lives of public exile. These stories articulate the tragic comedy of young love, the many ways to lose a family, and the rigid anxiety that comes from the fear of expressing too much. Set against a backdrop of New York's theater scene and looming McCarthyism, this book is about everything love is up against and the smoldering, dormant rebellion in the time before Stonewall." --cover page [4]

"Award-winning author Leslie Greentree presents fourteen short stories in this dark, often funny, deeply compelling collection that asks how we locate, create, and avoid meaning In our lives. These are stories about people and relationships challenged by death and redeemed by art. Satirical, political, personal, and tender, they take us to funerals, protests, art galleries, to the dark side of the service industry, and through cities on fire. An actress turns her terminal cancer diagnosis into an art instillation; a boy's attempt at a practical joke derails his grandfather's funeral; a mother discovers she may care more for her sick dog than her newborn son; a man watches his dream of becoming a #hero burn with the city around him; a teacher befriends a gargoyle; a coalition of women fighting for bodily autonomy turn to the ultimate shock-performance protest. Taking on the social collective, the performance of death, the political battleground, and the search for existential happiness with fearlessness and verve, Not the Apocalypse I Was Hoping For is full of sharp observation, irreverence, wit, and compassion."--

Hit or miss -- A perfect day at Riis Park -- Fortunetellers in Williamsburg -- Lightning Ridge -- Those delusions of grandeur -- Quarters -- People from Chicago -- Lies and funerals, complexications -- The boy -- Rancho Village -- Safe places -- Falling off the George Washington Bridge "Exploring the vagaries of life, human connection, and desire, the twelve stories of Safe Places navigate the fault lines of existence. Shifting from New York and Chicago to the American West and the Australian outback, Kerry Dolan's characters move through an uncertain and unpredictable world, confronting situations that are alternately menacing, tragic, and funny. An aspiring anthropologist falls under the sway of her fortuneteller. An American tourist catches opal fever in an Australian mining town and binds herself to a man she despises. Two hitchhiking teens take a ride with a mysterious stranger, while an unstable graduate student stalks the object of his affections across Berkeley. Assured and distinctive, the voice-driven stories of this debut collection capture the restless heart of characters in a state of flux, as they try-and frequently fail-to move beyond chance and circumstance"--
