    Main description: Dieser Sammelband befasst sich mit den sprachgeschichtlichen Aspekten von Texteditionen aus dem Bereich der germanistischen Mediävistik.     Main description: The articles in this volume discuss the language-historical aspects of text editions undertaken in the framework of German medieval studies. Throughout, due attention is given to the fact that the linguistic resources elaborated in the 19th century were based on highly manipulated versions, whereas more recently there has been a call for the return to manuscript sources. The papers delivered at the Basel symposium proceed from a consideration of this state of affairs. Neighboring disciplines like Dutch studies and Romance studies are also included

    Main description: In the study of modern languages at universities, philology understood in the narrower sense of textual criticism has become such a specialized activity that for a long time it generated only very few methodological impulses of broader relevance to the subjects and disciplines in which it was practised. This state of affairs changed dramatically with the advent of the so-called 'New Philology' in the early 90s, an approach relating textual criticism to text theory and text history. The volume assembles the findings of an international colloquium held at the University of Jena (19 Oct. to 21 Oct. 1995), at which linguists, literary scholars and specialists in Romance and German Studies subjected the theories of this 'New Philology' to a critical review, the overall objective being to revive the dialogue between the relevant disciplines and sub-disciplines

    Scholars of early Christian and Jewish literature have for many years focused on interpreting texts in their hypothetical original forms and contexts, while largely overlooking important aspects of the surviving manuscript evidence and the culture that produced it. This volume of essays seeks to remedy this situation by focusing on the material aspects of the manuscripts themselves and the fluidity of textual transmission in a manuscript culture. With an emphasis on method and looking at texts as they have been used and transmitted in manuscripts, this book discusses how we may deal with textual evidence that can often be described as mere snapshots of fluid textual traditions that have been intentionally adapted to fit ever-shifting contexts. The emphasis of the book is on the contexts and interests of users and producers of texts as they appear in our surviving manuscripts, rather than on original authors and their intentions, and the essays provide both important correctives to former textual interpretations, as well as new insights into the societies and individuals that copied and read the texts in the manuscripts that have actually been preserved to us

    Scholars of early Christian and Jewish literature have for many years focused on interpreting texts in their hypothetical original forms and contexts, while largely overlooking important aspects of the surviving manuscript evidence and the culture that produced it. This volume of essays seeks to remedy this situation by focusing on the material aspects of the manuscripts themselves and the fluidity of textual transmission in a manuscript culture. With an emphasis on method and looking at texts as they have been used and transmitted in manuscripts, this book discusses how we may deal with textual evidence that can often be described as mere snapshots of fluid textual traditions that have been intentionally adapted to fit ever-shifting contexts. The emphasis of the book is on the contexts and interests of users and producers of texts as they appear in our surviving manuscripts, rather than on original authors and their intentions, and the essays provide both important correctives to former textual interpretations, as well as new insights into the societies and individuals that copied and read the texts in the manuscripts that have actually been preserved to us.
