Anlässlich von 21 unbekannten, 2003 in den USA entdeckten (im Anhang abgedruckten) Arndt-Briefen stellen die vorliegenden Beiträge- Ergebnisse eines deutsch-amerikanischen Forschungsprojekts- Arndts Werk und seine Rezeption gänzlich neu zur Diskussion. Historiker, Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaftler analysieren die Rolle Arndts bei der Bildung eines deutschen Nationalitätsbewusstseins im 19. Jahrhundert, erörtern Rassismus und Nationalismus im europäischen Vergleich, untersuchen Arndts Werk im Kontext der europäischen Literatur-, Kultur- und Gesellschaftsgeschichte und verfolgen die Spuren seiner Rezeption in Deutschland und den USA. Once feted as the bard of the wars of liberation, Ernst Moritz Arndt (1769-1860) has today been largely consigned to oblivion, and little research has been done on his immense historical significance for the history of German mentality and culture in the 19th and 20th centuries. The articles assembled here are the results of a German-American research project. In response to the discovery in the United States of 21 hitherto unknown letters by Arndt in 2003, they take a completely new approach to the discussion of Arndt's works and their reception. Historians, linguists, and literary scholars analyze Arndt's role in the awakening of German national awareness in the 19th century, discuss racism and nationalism in various European countries, examine Arndt's oeuvre in the context of European literary, cultural, and social history, and trace the reception accorded to him in Germany and the United States. Die national motivierte Judenfeindschaft beginnt in Deutschland nicht erst mit Richard Wagner oder den antisemitischen Schriften, die im Kaiserreich ab 1871 entstanden sind. Wie die Untersuchung zeigt, haben schon die Schriftsteller der romantischen Generation im frühen 19. Jahrhundert ihre Vorstellung von einem „deutschen Wesen0 in rigoroser Abgrenzung zu angeblichen jüdischen Charaktereigenschaften entworfen. Dies wird in der Studie anhand essayistischer, aber auch fiktionaler Texte unter anderem von Achim von Arnim und Clemens Brentano gezeigt. The nationally motivated hostility towards Jews did not just start with Richard Wagner or the anti-Semitic writings produced in Imperial Germany from 1871 onwards. As the study shows, even the writers of the Romantic generation in the early 19th century drew up their idea of a 0German character0 which was rigorously delineated from alleged Jewish characteristics. This is shown in the study using both essayistic and fictional texts by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano among others.     Ernst Moritz Arndt (1769–1860) war einer der wirkmächtigen politischen Publi­zisten im Kontext der antinapoleonischen Kriege. Sein Werk, lange Zeit Bestandteil der deutschen Nationalliteratur, wurde in den letzten Jahrzehnten immer wieder Gegenstand kontroverser Auseinandersetzung. Der vorliegende Band will die Konturen des Arndtschen Werkes und seiner Rezeption sichtbar machen, indem er das differenzierte Arndt-Bild der historischen Lesergemeinden im Kaiserreich, der Weimarer Republik, der NS-Zeit, der Bundesrepublik sowie der DDR herausarbeitet.
