"Through a close-reading of a corpus of novels featuring young protagonists in their path toward adulthood, the book shows how Bildungsroman impacted the formation of the Egyptian narrative. On a larger scale, the book helps the reader to understand the key role played by the coming of age novel in the definition and perception of modern Arab subjectivity. Exploring the role of Bildungsroman in shaping the canonical Egyptian novel, the book discusses the case of Zaynab by Muhammad Husayn Haykal (1913) as an example of early Arab Bildungsnarrative. It focuses on Latifa Zayyat's masterpiece The Open Door and the novels of the 90es Generation, offering a gender-based analysis of the Egyptian Bildungsroman. It provides insightful readings about the function of the novel in women's re-negotiation of social boundaries. The study shows how the stories of youth present universal themes such as the thwarted quest for love, the struggle for personal fulfilment, the desire to achieve a cultural modernity often felt as "other than self". The book is a journey in the Twentieth Century Egyptian Novel, seen through the lens of the transnational form of Bildungsroman. It is a key resource to students and academics interested in Arabic literature, comparative literature and cultural studies"--...

"This book is an examination of how the space of the downtown served dual purposes as both a symbol of colonial influence and capital in Egypt, as well as a staging ground for the demonstrations of the Egyptian nationalist movement. It is through the lens of literature, in this case a body of texts that form an archive on the downtown, that one is able to understand the layered significance of this space for multiple generations of Egyptians"--

A critical analysis of the intersection between nationalism, literature and space in modern Egyptian fiction Includes close readings of literary texts by 11 Egyptian writers from the 1960s generation: Sonallah Ibrahim, Gamal al-Ghitani, Ibrahim Aslan, Radwa Ashour, Edwar al-Kharrat, Ibrahim Abdel Meguid, Abd al-Hakim Qasim, Yusuf al-Qaid, Yahya Taher Abdullah, Bahaa Taher and Muhammad al-BisatiTheorizes the connection between rural, urban and exilic space in Egyptian literary productionProvides a broad understanding of the social, political and economic changes that took place in Egypt and their influence upon the work of these writersExpands beyond the boundaries of a single decade to show how this literary generation transformed the cultural landscape and remains relevant todayIn 1960s Egypt a group of writers exploded onto the literary scene, transforming the aesthetic landscape. Space in Modern Egyptian Fiction explores how this literary generation presents a marked shift in the representation of rural, urban and exilic space, reflecting a disappointment with the project of the postcolonial nation-state in Egypt.Combining a sociological approach to literature with detailed close readings, Yasmine Ramadan explores the spatial representations that embodied this shift within the Egyptian literary scene and the disappearance of an idealized nation in the Egyptian novel. This study provides a robust examination of the emergence and establishment of some of the most significant writers in modern Egyptian literature, and their influence across six decades, while also tracing the social, economic, political and aesthetic changes that marked this period in Egypt’s contemporary history
