    Translation Revision and Post-editing looks at the apparently dissolving boundary between correcting translations generated by human brains and those generated by machines. It presents new research on post-editing and revision in government and corporate translation departments, translation agencies, the literary publishing sector and the volunteer sector, as well as on training in both types of translation checking work.This collection includes empirical studies based on surveys, interviews and keystroke logging, as well as more theoretical contributions questioning such traditional distinctions as translating versus editing. The chapters discuss revision and post-editing involving eight languages: Afrikaans, Catalan, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German and Spanish. Among the topics covered are translator/reviser relations and revising/post-editing by non-professionals.The book is key reading for researchers, instructors and advanced students in Translation Studies as well as for professional translators with a special interest in checking translations.

    eng: Post-editing is the bilingual checking and correction of a machine translation with the aim of making it suitable for the intended purpose according to specific guidelines and quality cri- teria. Depending on the purpose, either light or full post-editing is appropriate. While the former refers to rendering a machine translation understandable, the latter aims at generating a target text comparable to a human translation. This thesis focuses on giving an overview of the subject field and related technological, industry-related, educational and legal aspects. The main goal is to propose measures to optimise post-editing for both language service providers and their customers. In order to do this, machine translation output can be improved by pre-editing source texts or using controlled language. The appropriate training and use of machine translation sys- tems, possibly in combination with translation memory and terminology management systems, are essential. Post-editing can be facilitated by using translation tools specifically developed or enhanced for post-editing. Automatic post-editing as a preliminary stage for human post-editing is also advisable. Furthermore, post-editing in translator training is proposed as a measure on the one hand to overcome the widespread adverse attitude toward machine translation and post- editing and on the other hand to prepare both new and established translators for future devel- opments and industry needs. Lastly, post-editing guidelines are presented as a means to sum- marise the results. By looking at machine translation post-editing from several angles and sug- gesting means to optimise it, this thesis aims at shedding a more positive light on the subject and the opportunities it holds for the future of the translation industry.

    ger: In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden das Rechercheverhalten bzw. die Hilfsmittelbenutzung sowie der Zeitaufwand von Translationsstudierenden beim Post-Editing von maschinell übersetzten Fachtexten und beim Übersetzen beobachtet. Es wird den Fragen nachgegangen, ob der Zeitaufwand beim Post-Editieren kleiner ist als beim Übersetzen, ob beim Post-Editing weniger bzw. die gleichen Hilfsmittel verwendet werden wie beim Übersetzen sowie welche Art von Information gesucht wird. Als Basis für die empirische Untersuchung dienen die Hilfsmitteltypologie und die Typologie der Suchfragen von Nord sowie die Internetrecherchemitteltypologie nach Schüßler. Im Rahmen der Arbeit wird eine quantitative Studie mit 20 Translationsstudierenden im Masterstudium mit der Sprachenkombination Spanisch-Deutsch durchgeführt, wobei je 10 ProbandInnen einen Fachtext übersetzen bzw. post-editieren und dabei beim Recherchieren beobachtet werden. Zudem werden alle Bildschirmaktivitäten aufgezeichnet und die persönlichen Daten der ProbandInnen mittels eines Fragebogens gesammelt. Schließlich wird ein retrospektives Interview mit den Versuchspersonen durchgeführt. Ergebnisse bestätigen, dass der Zeitaufwand beim Post-Editing kleiner ist als beim Übersetzen und dass beim letzteren ein breiteres Spektrum an Hilfsmitteln beobachtet werden kann. Zudem wird festgestellt, dass beim Post-Editing viel weniger recherchiert wird als beim Übersetzen und dass in den beiden Versuchsgruppen die gleichen Suchfragen vorkommen, nur unterschiedlich oft. eng: In the present work, the research behavior as well as the time spent by translation students when post-editing machine translated specialized texts and translating are observed. It addresses the questions whether it requires less time to post-edit a text rather than to translate it, whether less and/or the same external resources are consulted when post-editing and what kind of information is searched for. The empirical investigation is based on the typology of translation tools and the typology of search queries by Nord as well as on the typology of electronic translation tools according to Schüßler. Within the framework of the master's thesis, a quantitative study with 20 translation students in their master study with the language combination Spanish and German is carried out, with 10 subjects each translating or post-editing a specialized text and at the same time being observed when consulting external resources. In addition, all screen activities are recorded and the personal data of the participants are collected by means of a questionnaire. Finally, a retrospective interview with the test subjects is carried out. Results confirm that it takes less time to post-edit a text than to translate it and that a wider range of resources can be observed when translating. In addition, it is found that there is considerably less research carried out in post-editing than in translation and that the same search queries occur in both experimental groups, even though they differ in frequency.
