The history of Gdańsk carillons begins in 1561. It was that year that fourteen automatic bells were installed in the Main Town Hall. Later, a "striking mechanism" appeared in St Catherine’s Church. This magnificent instrument, consisting of thirty-five bells, has been in use since 1738. The third carillon was built in 1939 in the youth hostel at Biskupia Górka. The play of Gdańsk carillons was interrupted by the Second World War. The book discusses the history and music of Gdańsk carillons. It contains valuable information on bells, carillon mechanisms, bell founders, carillonists, and bell setters, inviting the reader to study the Protestant repertoire, the unique notation of preserved manuscripts, and the remarkable soundscape of Gdańsk, which for centuries has been marked by the sound of carillons.

  2. At the origins of Classical opera : Carlo Goldoni and the «dramma giocoso per musica»

Venetian playwright and pioneer of modern theatre Carlo Goldoni (1707-1793) led a ‘double life’ as a librettist, authoring nearly as many libretti as comedies- libretti which, born from the same mind and the same hand that brought forth his famous, and famously controversial, overhaul of the practices of comic theatre, could not
but push the limits of the standing tradition to open a new chapter in opera history. Goldoni became one of the first to give shape to the dramma giocoso per musica, an innovative, realistic, and enduring new genre with intimate connections to prose comedy that met with overwhelming international success, becoming the foundation for the works of future generations, including W. A. Mozart and his Italian librettist Lorenzo da Ponte. Perhaps because of his stature and influence as a comic playwright, Goldoni has rarely been considered as an innovator in the musical sphere. This study aims to shed new light on his primary role in the evolution of Classical opera, and on the legacy of his innovations in the European musical tradition.

This book results from Robert Klugseder’s discovery of new fragments in Vienna (Fragm. 661) and Margaret Bent’s recognition that they belonged to the same original manuscript as a set of fragments in Munich (Mus. Ms. 3224, Aalready known). Together they make a torso of 12 leaves with 20 compositions, nearly half of which are unique, an important complement to the already-known Veneto manuscripts of international repertory of the first half of the 15th century. A high-quality colour facsimile of these leaves, together with associated fragmentary survivals, is preceded by an in-depth codicological and repertorial study in German and English.

renowned motets, such as Senfl’s Nisi Dominus, or the

polyphonic setting of Non moriar sed vivam, which Senfl sent to Martin Luther in 1530 as a consolation. Editions will also render three Salve settings (including a Christological adaption), a multitexted

Regina caeli, as well as nearly all of Senfl’s humanist motets (Quid vitam sine te, Sum tuus in vita (i), Tristia fata boni)

accessible. The Critical Reports accompanying the editions offer information on every motet with regard to the texts set to music, the plainchant models, an evaluation of the sources (incl. a synoptic overview of variant readings), as well as details on the

history of each composition.

This book is the first monographic study of nineteenth-century transcriptions of Chopin's music. The work is based on the quantitatively and qualitatively rich source material, which formed the basis for considerations from the perspective of social history, music analysis and aesthetics. Thanks to these multiple perspectives, as well as the time range and the source base, this study may contribute to the history of the reception of Chopin’s work in nineteenth-century culture; it may also prove significant in overcoming the attitude that aesthetically deprecates transcriptions and in adopting a different stance, regarding such adaptations as valuable texts of musical culture.

This book is the first collection of research articles dedicated exclusively to the life and works of the Renaissance composer Gaspar van Weerbeke. While the basic facts of Gaspar’s life have long been known, the book fleshes out the details, presenting a more differentiated and complex picture of his biography. Analysis of a wider range of Gaspar’s compositional output leads to new interpretations of his approach to different genres: masses, motets, and motet cycles.

Daniel-François-Esprit Auber (1782-1871), the most amiable French composer of the 19th century, came to his abilities late in life. After a stalled commercial career, he studied with Cherubini. His first works were not a success, but La Bergère Châteleine (1820), written at the age of 38, established him as an operatic composer. He then met the librettist Eugène Scribe (1791-1861), with whom he developed a working partnership, one of the most successful in musical history, that lasted until S TABLE OF CONTENTS; INTRODUCTION; LA MUETTE DE PORTICI; ACT I; ACT II; ACT III; ACT IV; ACT V.
