    Biographical note: Lorenz Engell (Prof. Dr.) ist Direktor des Internationalen Kollegs für Kulturtechnikforschung und Medienphilosophie in Weimar. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Film und Fernsehen. Jiri Bystricky (Dr. habil.) lehrt an der Universität Olomouc (CKMKS) und der Kunstakademie in Prag. 2002 gründete er das Institut für elektronische Kultur und Semiotik an der Karls-Universität Prag. Katerina Krtilova (M.A.) ist Mitarbeiterin des Internationalen Kollegs für Kulturtechnikforschung und Medienphilosophie Weimar und promoviert zu Vilém Flussers Medienphilosophie. Dem begrifflichen Denken steht die Möglichkeit eines Denkens in Bildern gegenüber. Technische Bilder zu begreifen kann bedeuten, nicht nur über, sondern in und mit Bildern zu denken. Doch wie ändert sich die Theorie, wenn Medien und Technologien nicht nur als passive Träger und Mittel beschrieben werden, sondern als aktiv 'mitdenkende'? Dieser Band zeigt, wie Begriffe in Verbindung mit Medien in Bewegung geraten - sowohl Medienbegriffe als auch das begriffliche Denken als Medium. Die Beiträge - u.a. von Erich Hörl, Dieter Mersch, Lorenz Engell, tschechischen, slowakischen und britischen Autorinnen und Autoren - führen von einer Sinnverschiebung im Zuge des Denkens der Technik über Fragen der Bildlichkeit bis zur Analyse konkreter bewegter Bilder. Even before Freud posited dreams as a way of "seeing" even as we sleep, the writings of philosophers, artists, and scientists from Goethe to Cézanne have argued that to understand vision as a mere mirroring of the outside world is to overlook a more important cognitive act of seeing that is dependent on time. Bringing together a renowned international group of contributors, Vision in Motion explores one of the most vexing problems in the study of vision and cognition: To make sense of the sensations we experience when we see something, we must configure many moments into a synchronous image. This volume offers a critical reexamination of seeing that restores a concept of "vision in motion" that avoids reducing the sensations we experience to narrative chronological sequencing. The contributors draw on Hume, Bergson, and Deleuze, among others, to establish a nuanced idea of how we perceive.

Even before Freud posited dreams as a way of "seeing" even as we sleep, the writings of philosophers, artists, and scientists from Goethe to Cézanne have argued that to understand vision as a mere mirroring of the outside world is to overlook a more important cognitive act of seeing that is dependent on time. Bringing together a renowned international group of contributors, Vision in Motion explores one of the most vexing problems in the study of vision and cognition: To make sense of the sensations we experience when we see something, we must configure many moments into a synchronous image.
