This master?s thesis deals with problems along the border between the United States of America and Mexico. It describes the general (living) situation at the border, the working conditions in the maquiladoras, which are financed by foreign investors, dominance relations between the two neighboring countries and the value of Mexican women against the background of countless femicides.First of all, the thesis discusses Mexico's economic and political situation and its relationship to the United States of America. Both the advantages and disadvantages of the maquiladoras for Mexico as well as their impact on the environment are examined. In addition, the inhumane working conditions in the factories are described. Finally, the feminization of labor in Latin America and the importance of women in the maquiladora industry are discussed. The following novels are used in the literary analysis: Mujer alabastrina by Víctor Bartoli Herrera, La frontera de cristal by Carlos Fuentes, La frontière by Patrick Bard and Ciudad final by Kama Gutier. The analyses of the novels focus on the presentation of the main subjects and highlight the different approaches of the authors to the border-related problems. While Patrick Bard addresses the theme from the perspective of a journalist, Kama Gutier takes a criminological approach. In Mujer alabastrina and La frontera de cristal women talk about the suffering they have experienced and also draw a rough picture of the economic and political situation in the region bordering the United States. In addition, linguistic characteristics are highlighted, depending on their importance in the novels. The two films Bordertown, by Gregory Nava, and Back Yard / Traspatio, written by Sabina Berman and directed by Carlos Carrera, complement the literary analyses and provide a visual impression of the problems and issues related to the maquiladoras.

Main description: This pioneering work is the first to trace how our understanding of the causes of human behavior has changed radically over the course of European and American cultural history since 1830. Focusing on the act of murder, as documented vividly by more than a hundred novels including Crime and Punishment, An American Tragedy, The Trial, and Lolita, Stephen Kern devotes each chapter of A Cultural History of Causality to examining a specific causal factor or motive for murder--ancestry, childhood, language, sexuality, emotion, mind, society, and ideology. In addition to drawing on particular novels, each chapter considers the sciences (genetics, endocrinology, physiology, neuroscience) and systems of thought (psychoanalysis, linguistics, sociology, forensic psychiatry, and existential philosophy) most germane to each causal factor or motive. Kern identifies five shifts in thinking about causality, shifts toward increasing specificity, multiplicity, complexity, probability, and uncertainty. He argues that the more researchers learned about the causes of human behavior, the more they realized how much more there was to know and how little they knew about what they thought they knew. The book closes by considering the revolutionary impact of quantum theory, which, though it influenced novelists only marginally, shattered the model of causal understanding that had dominated Western thought since the seventeenth century. Others have addressed changing ideas about causality in specific areas, but no one has tackled a broad cultural history of this concept as does Stephen Kern in this engagingly written and lucidly argued book

How a society defines crimes and prosecutes criminals illuminates its cultural values, social norms, and political expectations. In Murder Most Russian, Louise McReynolds uses a fascinating series of murders and subsequent trials that took place in the wake of the 1864 legal reforms enacted by Tsar Alexander II to understand the impact of these reforms on Russian society before the Revolution of 1917. For the first time in Russian history, the accused were placed in the hands of juries of common citizens in courtrooms that were open to the press. Drawing on a wide array of sources, McReynolds reconstructs murders that gripped Russian society, from the case of Andrei Gilevich, who advertised for a personal secretary and beheaded the respondent as a way of perpetrating insurance fraud, to the beating death of Marianna Time at the hands of two young aristocrats who hoped to steal her diamond earrings. As McReynolds shows, newspapers covered such trials extensively, transforming the courtroom into the most public site in Russia for deliberation about legality and justice. To understand the cultural and social consequences of murder in late imperial Russia, she analyzes the discussions that arose among the emergent professional criminologists, defense attorneys, and expert forensic witnesses about what made a defendant's behavior "criminal." She also deftly connects real criminal trials to the burgeoning literary genre of crime fiction and fruitfully compares the Russian case to examples of crimes both from Western Europe and the United States in this period.Murder Most Russian will appeal not only to readers interested in Russian culture and true crime but also to historians who study criminology, urbanization, the role of the social sciences in forging the modern state, evolving notions of the self and the psyche, the instability of gender norms, and sensationalism in the modern media
