"The writers who are the focus of this study - Lawrence, Woolf, Bennett, Conrad, Forster, Galsworthy, and James - either admired Dostoevsky or feared him as monster who might dissolve all literary and cultural distinctions. Though their responses differed greatly, these writers were unanimous in their inability to recognize Dostoevsky as a literary artist. They viewed him instead as a psychologist, a mystic, a prophet, and, in the cases of Lawrence and Conrad, a hated rival who compelled creative response. This study constructs a map of English modernist novelists' misreadings of Dostoevsky, and in so doing it illuminates their aesthetic and cultural values and the nature of the modern English novel."--BOOK JACKET.

Publisher's description: In The Great War and the Language of Modernism, Vincent Sherry reopens long unanswered questions regarding the influence of the 1914 war on the verbal experiments of modernist poetry and fiction. Sherry recovers the political discourses of the British campaign and establishes the language to which literary modernism responds with its boldest initiatives. In its wholly new reading of Woolf, Eliot, and Pound, this book restores the historical content and depth of this literature and reveal its most daring import.

The modernist period saw a revolution in fictional practice, most famously in the work of novelists such as Joyce and Woolf. Dominic Head shows that the short story, with its particular stress on literary artifice, was a central site for modernist innovation. Working against a conventional approach and towards a more rigorous and sophisticated theory of the genre, using a framework drawn from Althusser and Bakhtin, he examines the short story's range of formal effects, such as the disunifying function of ellipsis and ambiguity. Separate chapters on Joyce, Woolf and Katherine Mansfield highlight their strategies of formal dissonance, involving a conflict of voices within the narrative. A chapter on Wyndham Lewis explores the use of the form to enact the aesthetics of Vorticism, resulting in the impasse of isolationism in its view of the individual. By contrast, Malcolm Lowry's stories are shown as offering a means of transcending this, in their very different treatment of the individual's experience. Finally, Dominic Head's challenging conclusion takes the implications of his study into the age of postmodernism.

Like other poststructuralist theories, Lacanian theory has long been accused of being ahistorical. In The Subject of Modernism, Tony E. Jackson combines a uniquely graspable explanation of the Lacanian theory of the self with a series of detailed psychoanalytic interpretations of actual texts to offer a new kind of literary history After exposing the seldom-discussed history of the self found in the work of Lacan, Jackson shows that the basic plot structure of realistic novels reveals an unconscious desire to preserve a certain kind of historically institutionalized self, but that the desire of realism to write the most real representation of reality steadily makes the self-preservation more difficult to sustain. Thus in following through on its own desire to prove the certainty of its being, realism eventually discovers its own impossibility. Jackson charts the resistances to and misrecognitions of this discovery as they are revealed in the changes of narrative form from Eliot's last, most ambitious novel, Daniel Deronda, through Conrad's most modernist novels, Lord Jim and Heart of Darkness, to Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway and The Waves. He ends with an appended consideration of the "Cyclops" and "Nausicaa" chapters from Joyces's Ulysses While other critics have argued that realism structures a certain self and modernism undoes that self, they have not attempted a historical explanation of why this change should have occurred. Jackson reads the emergence of modernism as a kind of generic self-analysis of realism, analogous to the self-analysis performed by Freud: when realism discovers the significance of its own desire to write the most real representation of reality, it has, in that moment, become modernism. It has grasped its own nature and so fully becomes itself, for the first time, as modernism. The Subject of Modernism will appeal most obviously to readers of Victorian and modernist fiction, but it will also draw those interested in the history of the novel and in the idea of literary history in general. Finally, because of the way Jackson brings together fiction, psychoanalysis, and history, anyone interested in the history of aesthetics will find here new ways to examine particular art forms

Framing Pieces takes as its starting point the premise that the frames of modern art - the notes, marginalia, critical essays, and longer prose pieces with which James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, and Ezra Pound surrounded their texts - perform complex aesthetic and socio-political work. John Whittier-Ferguson discusses a variety of texts and contexts, including Finnegan's Wake, A Room of One's Own, The Pargiters, Three Guineas, and Pound's prose and poetry from the 1930s. He argues that the study of twentieth-century apparatus is crucial to the comprehension of the text it brackets and of the self-conscious, self-promoting, and self-elucidating and obscuring nature of the moderns gathered in this book. Whittier-Ferguson introduces his inquiry with a discussion of the paradigmatic instance of the modernist apparatus, Eliot's notes to The Waste Land. From there, he leads his readers into an exploration of questions central to the study of modernism today. He considers the political inflections of Modernist texts and traces the uncertain domain of the avant-garde. Further, Whittier-Ferguson determines the means by which writers make claims to different forms of cultural authority and demonstrates the ways an author's designs are themselves ultimately framed by historical forces that resist all designing. Turning his readers' attention to the margins of canonical modernism, Whittier-Ferguson newly illuminates authors and texts central to an understanding of twentieth-century art and culture.

"In Fiction and the Law: Legal Discourse in Victorian and Modernist Literature Kieran Dolin examines the dialectical interplay between legal discourse and the novel in the century between Walter Scott and E. M. Forster, the period when the institution of the law was undergoing radical reform and the novel was at the peak of its cultural power. Dolin's comprehensive study argues that this cultural power is attributable in part to the novel's critical engagement with the law. His study draws on legal and literary theory to trace this important convergence of disciplines in a series of canonical Victorian and Modernist texts."--BOOK JACKET.
