    Mobile phone, PC, AV player, radio, web browser - a diverse range of media content and platforms converge in the smartphone. The basis for this is inevitably formed by media technological forms of production. Then there are the design implications - such as the user interface design or interactive apps - which produce their visual appearance through their interaction with the upstream, 'invisible' technology. The aesthetics of smartphones themselves, however - understood as the possibility of their perception as media - has so far not been examined. The volume takes on this desideratum from a transdisciplinary perspective for the first time. Mobiltelefon, PC, AV-Player, Radio, Webbrowser - im Smartphone konvergieren vielfältige Medieninhalte und -phänomene. Zwangsläufig bilden medientechnologische Produktionsformen die Basis hierfür. Hinzu kommen gestalterische Implikationen, die im Umgang mit der vorgeschalteten, »unsichtbaren« Technik deren Optik hervorbringen: etwa das User Interface Design oder interaktive Applikationen. Die Ästhetik des Smartphones selbst jedoch - verstanden als dessen mediale Wahrnehmungsmöglichkeiten - ist bislang nicht untersucht worden. Der Band nimmt sich dieses Desiderats erstmalig aus transdisziplinärer Perspektive an.

    Many developing country governments determine eligibility for anti-poverty programs using censuses of household assets. Does this distort subsequent reporting of, or actual purchases of, those assets? We ran a nationwide experiment in Indonesia where, in randomly selected provinces, the government added questions on flat-screen televisions and cell-phone SIM cards to the targeting census administered to 25 million households. In a separate survey six months later, households in treated provinces report fewer televisions, though the effect dissipates thereafter. We find no change in actual television sales, or actual SIM card ownership, suggesting that consumption distortions are likely to be small

Die Ästhetik des Smartphones selbst jedoch - verstanden als dessen mediale Wahrnehmungsmöglichkeiten - ist bislang nicht untersucht worden. Der Band nimmt sich diesem Desiderat erstmalig aus transdisziplinärer Perspektive an Mobile phone, PC, AV player, radio, web browser - a diverse range of media content and platforms converge in the smartphone. The basis for this is inevitably formed by media technological forms of production. Then there are the design implications - such as the user interface design or interactive apps - which produce their visual appearance through their interaction with the upstream, 'invisible' technology. The aesthetics of smartphones themselves, however - understood as the possibility of their perception as media - has so far not been examined. The volume takes on this desideratum from a transdisciplinary perspective for the first time

    This study is an empirical study on the effect of telecommunication rate policy in Korea. More specifically, it examines the relationship between the Mobile Device Distribution Improvement Act enacted in 2014 and mobile telecommunication rate and device installments. Therefore, the research question is "How does the Mobile Device Distribution Improvement Act affect consumers' telecommunication rate and device installments?" Six - year data from the KISDI Media Panel was used as the research data, and STATA 13.0 was used for the analysis. As a result of the analysis, since the implementation of Mobile Device Distribution Improvement Act, both the communication charges and the terminal installments of users decreased. Despite these monetary benefits, the policy did not establish transparency in the distribution of the mobile communication market, which was originally intended, and it was limited in that it failed to secure policy compliance or trust from the policy target. It is necessary to enhance policy effectiveness through policy adaptability and trust in communication policy.

    The enormous global demand for smartphones in recent years has created a new global tech cycle. In 2016 alone, global smartphone sales reached close to 1.5 billion, one for every fifth person on earth. In turn, this has engendered complex and evolving supply chains across Asia. We show that the new tech cycle cannot be captured by standard seasonality, but depends on smartphone product release dates. Decomposing cycle from trend, we also show that the sale of smartphones may have peaked in late 2015. Asia, however, continues to gain in importance as the global tech manufacturer

    One-fifth of the world's population lives in countries affected by fragility, violence and conflict, impeding long-term economic growth. However, little is known about how firms respond to local changes in security, partly because of the difficulty of measuring firm activity in these settings. This paper presents a novel methodology for observing private sector activity using mobile phone metadata. Using Afghanistan as the empirical setting, the analysis combines mobile phone data from over 2,300 firms with data from several other sources to develop and validate measures of firm location, size, and economic activity. Combining these new measures of firm activity with geocoded data on violent events, the paper investigates how the private sector in Afghanistan responds to insecurity. The findings indicate that firms reduce presence in districts following major increases in violence, that these effects persist for up to six months, and that larger firms are more responsive to violence. The paper concludes with a discussion of potential mechanisms, firms' strategic adaptations, and implications for policymakers
