    Viele Apps, die heutzutage auf mobilen Endgeräten verwendet werden können, nutzen Gamification, also den Einsatz von Spielelementen in einem eigentlich spielfremden Kontext. Die Untersuchung von Gamification und deren Einfluss auf die Kundenbindung im Mobile Commerce ist ein vollkommen neues und weitestgehend unerforschtes Wissenschaftsgebiet - Laura Mitzscherling beschreitet also wissenschaftliches Neuland. Ausgehend von den Verhaltenswissenschaften und insbesondere der Motivations-, Einstellungs- und Kundenbindungsforschung zeigt sie, dass gamifizierte Apps Menschen motivieren und zwar vor allem aufgrund von sozialen Aspekten, Aspekten der Benutzerfreundlichkeit, der Brauchbarkeit, der Freude sowie der Belohnung. Zudem fragt sie, ob sich Nutzer gamifizierter Apps an die entsprechenden Unternehmen binden. In welchem Ausmaß übertragen sich dabei positive Erfahrungen mit gamifizierten Apps auf die entsprechenden Unternehmen und ihre Produkte sowie Dienstleistungen, verschaffen ihnen damit einen Wettbewerbsvorteil gegenüber der Konkurrenz und wirken sich auf das tatsächliche Kauf- und Wiederkaufverhalten der Nutzer dieser Apps aus? Und welche Schlüsse lassen sich daraus ziehen? Dieses Buch ging aus der Masterarbeit von Laura Mitzscherling hervor, die für den 'Wissenschaftspreis 2014 (EHI Retail Institute)' in der Kategorie 'Beste Masterarbeit' nominiert war und es auch schon 2013 unter die Top10 des 'Hochschulpreises David-Kopf' schaffte.

    This paper details the history of Jetty, an app-based collective transport platform operating in Mexico City since August 2017. It sets out the origins of the idea, recounts the strong competitive and regulatory pushback Jetty has faced, and evaluates Jetty's current growth and impact. In this context, the paper explores the potential contribution of new app-based mobility services in environments such as Mexico City - where transit alternatives are ubiquitous, fares are low and unsubsidised, but service is unsafe, insecure, uncomfortable, unreliable and unaccountable. It asks to what extent a technology company can complement government regulations, by establishing and enforcing stricter service standards on private suppliers of service whilst remaining responsive and accountable to passengers.

    This paper develops a dynamic model of technology adoption featuring strategic complementarities: the benefits of usage increase with the number of adopters. We study the diffusion of new means of payments, where such complementarities are pervasive. We show that complementarities give rise to multiple equilibria, suboptimal allocations, and study the planner's problem. The model generates gradualism in adoption, as individuals optimally wait for others to adopt before doing so. We apply the theory to the adoption of SINPE, an electronic peer-to-peer (P2P) payment app developed by the Central Bank of Costa Rica. Transaction-level data on the use of SINPE and several administrative data sets on the network structure allow us to exploit plausibly exogenous variation and to document sizable complementarities. A calibrated version of the model shows that the optimal subsidy pushes the economy to universal adoption

    The growth of digital labour platforms has significantly changed the world of work in Santiago, Chile, especially in the taxi and delivery sectors. This has gained even further prominence since the outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Delivery platforms, in particular, have gained prominence offering various services, such as delivery from restaurants, supermarkets and pharmacies, with a promise of higher efficiency. However, this growth has also brought attention to the challenges faced by the workers on these platforms. Debates are ongoing about how to provide fair working conditions for platform workers. Chile has recently taken legislative measures in this direction. This paper aims to contribute to this debate by focusing on the diverse experiences of mobile application-based delivery workers in the country, while also examining the business model of delivery platforms that rely on new technologies to mediate work, as well as the consequences for workers. This paper draws on the data from the in-person survey conducted in Santiago in 2019, involving 259 mobile application-based delivery workers and 50 traditional delivery workers, as well as a follow-up survey conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic in August 2020. The paper provides insights into how different delivery platforms have operated in Chile and their effects on workers in terms of earnings, working hours, occupational health and safety, and social protection. The paper also examines the algorithmic management practices of delivery platforms and their impact on worker flexibility and autonomy. It highlights the precarious and vulnerable situation of these workers, which had been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The paper also shows, however, how platform workers have started to organize and demand better working conditions. Lastly, as Chile moves towards implementing a new law to regulate platform work, the paper identifies key challenges that need to be addressed to ensure that all platform workers have access to decent work.

Große Technologieunternehmen wie Apple, Google, Amazon und Microsoft üben durch ihre digitalen Ökosysteme und die damit verbundene GatekeepingMacht die Kontrolle über den Zugang zu Online-Inhalten, Produkten, Dienstleistungen und sozialen Interaktionen aus. Innerhalb dieser Ökosysteme spielen mobile Plattformen rund um Smartphones, Betriebssysteme und App-Stores eine immer zentralere Rolle. Die jüngste Einführung des Digital Markets Act (DMA) durch die Europäische Union stellt eine bedeutende Entwicklung in der Regulierung digitaler Plattformen und mobiler Ökosysteme dar. Durch die Auferlegung von Regeln zur Förderung des Wettbewerbs und des fairen Zugangs ist hierbei eine Untersuchung der Zugangsüberlegungen und Preisstrukturen im Zusammenhang mit digitalen Plattformen und App-Stores geboten.     The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and of cross-border restrictions on data flows has created a host of new questions and related policy dilemmas. This paper addresses two questions: How is digital service trade shaped by (1) AI algorithms and (2) by the interplay between AI algorithms and cross-border restrictions on data flows? Answers lie in the palm of your hand: From London to Lagos, mobile app users trigger international transactions when they open AI-powered foreign apps. We have 2015-2020 usage data for the most popular 35,575 mobile apps and, to quantify the AI deployed in each of these apps, we use a large language model (LLM) to link each app to each of the app developer's AI patents. (This linkage of specific products to specific patents is a methodological innovation.) Armed with data on app usage by country, with AI deployed in each app, and with an instrument for AI (a Heckscher-Ohlin cost-shifter), we answer our two questions. (1) On average, AI causally raises an app's number of foreign users by 2.67 log points or by more than 10-fold. (2) The impact of AI on foreign users is halved if the foreign users are in a country with strong restrictions on cross-border data flows. These countries are usually autocracies. We also provide a new way of measuring AI knowledge spillovers across firms and find large spillovers. Finally, our work suggests numerous ways in which LLMs such as ChatGPT can be used in other applications
