    Con el mercantilismo, el mercader se convirtió en uno de los tipos sociales fundamentales de la sociedad del siglo XVII. Una nueva valoración de su figura trajo un nuevo ideal de vida, en el cual el trabajo sobrio y disciplinado es central, mientras que el afán de honor comienza a ser condenado. El comercio se constituye así en una fuerza constructiva y civilizadora. De ello surgen preguntas como las siguientes: ¿qué ámbitos de conocimiento, aparte de aritmética y geografía, tiene que dominar el mercader? ¿Debe actuar según la moral o tan solo simular hacerlo, para así poder hacer frente al engaño ajeno de manera más efectiva? Este volumen da cumplida respuesta a estas y otras cuestiones sobre el intercambio comercial y su reflejo en la literatura española del Siglo de Oro, a través del estudio de obras de autores como Quevedo y Lope de Vega
