"From unarmed protesters confronting whaling ships, to anti-logging activists occupying trees, radical environmentalists increasingly rely upon attracting mass media coverage to gain public support. Their controversial "image events" have attracted national attention, spurred public debate, and provoked changes in environmental policies. In this book, Kevin Michael DeLuca examines the use of the image event as a rhetorical tactic, one that often supplants written or spoken arguments. He analyzes widely televised environmentalist actions to illustrate how these groups' visual discourse fulfills fundamental rhetorical functions - and enacts new political possibilities." "Providing a sustained critique of the practices of environmental activists today, this book also stretches the boundaries of critical rhetoric itself. It will be read with interest by scholars and students of rhetorical theory, media and communication theory, visual theory, environmental studies, social change movements, and political theory."--BOOK JACKET.

"This book offers a focused and practical guide to integrate the relationship between media and the environment-ecomedia-into media education. It enables media teachers to 'green' their pedagogy by providing essential tools and approaches that can be applied in the classroom. Media are an essential features of our planetary ecosystem emergency, contributing to both the problem and solution to climate chaos, biodiversity loss, ocean acidification, deforestation, water contamination, and so on. Offering a clear theoretical framework and suggested curriculum guide, Antonio López provides key resources that will enable media educators to apply ecomedia concepts into their curricula. By reconceptualizing media education, this book connects ecology, environmental communication, ecomedia studies, environmental humanities, and ecoliteracy to bridge media literacy and education for sustainability. Ecomedia Literacy is an essential read for educators and scholars in the areas of media literacy, media and communication, media and cultural studies, environmental humanities, and environmental studies"--

Bringing together media studies and environmental humanities, the contributors to Saturation develop saturation as a heuristic to analyze phenomena in which the elements involved are difficult or impossible to separate. In ordinary language, saturation describes the condition of being thoroughly soaked, while in chemistry it is the threshold at which something can be maximally dissolved or absorbed in a solution. Contributors to this collection expand notions of saturation beyond water to consider saturation in sound, infrastructure, media, Big Data, capitalism, and visual culture. Essays include analyses of the thresholds of HIV detectability in bloodwork, militarism's saturation of oceans, and the deleterious effects of the saturation of cellphone and wi-fi signals into the human body. By channeling saturation to explore the relationship between media, the environment, technology, capital, and the legacies of settler colonialism, Saturation illuminates how elements, the natural world, and anthropogenic infrastructures, politics, and processes exist in and through each other.Contributors. Marija Cetinić, Jeff Diamanti, Bishnupriya Ghosh, Lisa Yin Han, Stefan Helmreich, Mél Hogan, Melody Jue, Rahul Mukherjee, Max Ritts, Rafico Ruiz, Bhaskar Sarkar, John Shiga, Avery Slater, Janet Walker, Joanna Zylinska
