    Critical editions of most classical authors are based on readings transmitted by medieval scholars that can be examined and collated. Modern editions of Petronius, on the other hand, are principally based on printed editions, most of them published in France during the sixteenth century. In this volume T. Wade Richardson considers the use made of the Petronius manuscripts then extant by seven French humanist editors for their various editions, commentaries, and notes.Some of the manuscripts they used may be equated with extant exemplars, which therefore serve as a good check on the quality of their readings. But as much as half of the text rests on the sixteenth-century witness alone. Through a broad and integrated study of the problems of the Petronius text the author attempts to unravel the tangled skein of humanist work on Petronius, to settle some of the old textual puzzles, and to solidify the text and recast the apparatus.Richardson also provides information on the codicology and palaeography of the texts and on the talents and habits of the scholars who created them.

    Ausgangspunkt und Zentrum der Arbeit bilden sieben liturgische Handschriften aus der Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, die größtenteils zwischen Mitte des 13. und Anfang des 14. Jahrhunderts entstanden. Es handelt sich um durchwegs für die dominikanische Liturgie bestimmten Codices, zwei Gradualia, vier Antiphonarien und ein Psalterium-Hymnar, die aufgrund ihrer kohärenten Nummerierung aus dem 19. Jahrhundert eine Gruppe bilden. Die Autorin kann erstmals zeigen, dass die Manuskripte als Folge der Säkularisation das Zürcher Kloster St. Katharinental wohl im zweiten Viertel des 19. Jahrhunderts verlassen haben. Ausgehend vom Graduale Vat. lat 10769 rekonstruiert die Autorin um die fünf älteren Codices ihrer Gruppe eine umfangreiche Handschriftengruppe, die "Zürcher Gruppe". Die Einheitlichkeit des Buchschmucks, die gelegentliche Verwendung von Malanweisungen und die Heterogenität der Auftraggeberschaft sind ein klarer Hinweis darauf, dass die Handschriften der "Zürcher Gruppe" durch weltliche, professionelle Schreiber, Floratoren und Buchmaler hergestellt wurden. Der entscheidende Impuls zur Beschäftigung solcher Buchhersteller dürfte aufgrund der dominikanischen Ordensvorschriften zur Buchproduktion vom Zürcher Konvent gekommen sein. Er trug damit zur Einführung neuer Methoden der Buchproduktion bei, die sich am Betrieb in den Universitätsstädten orientierten. Es zeichnet sich ab, dass die Limmatstadt zumindest vom letzten Viertel des 13. bis zur Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts ein bedeutendes Zentrum der Buchproduktion gewesen ist. Durch den Vergleich mit weiteren Handschriften, u.a. dem bedeutenden Graduale von St. Katharinental, kann die Autorin zudem einmal mehr zeigen, dass sich die Buchproduktion im Raum Zürich – Konstanz um 1300 durch vielschichtige Beziehungen untereinander auszeichnet.
