"War Memories explores the patchwork formed by collective memory, public remembrance, private recollection, and the ways in which they form a complex composition of observations, initiatives, and experiences. Offering an international perspective on war commemoration, contributors consider the process of assembling historical facts and subjective experiences to show how these points of view diverge according to various social, cultural, political, and historical perspectives. Encompassing the representations of wars in the English-speaking world over the last hundred years or so, this collection presents an extensive, yet integrated, reflection on various types of commemorations and interpretations of events. Essays respond to common questions regarding war memory: how and why do we remember war? What does commemoration tell us about the actors in wars? How does commemoration reflect contemporary society's culture of war? War Memories disseminates current knowledge on the performance, interpretation, and rewriting of facts and events during and after wars, while focusing on how patriotic fervour, resistance, conscientious objection, injury, trauma, and propaganda contribute to the shaping of individual and collective memory."--

D-Day -- Eichmann's ghost -- Citizens of the Holocaust : the vernacular of growing up after World War II -- Unexploded bombs -- "They are ever returning to us, the dead" : the novels of W.G. Sebald -- Toward an ethics of identification

"Marianna Torgovnick argues that we have lived since the end of World War II, under the power of a war complex - a set of repressed ideas and impulses that stems from our unresolved attitudes toward the technological acceleration of mass death. This complex has led to gaps and hesitations in public discourse about atrocities committed during war itself. And it remains an enduring wartime consciousness, one most recently animated on September 11, 2001." "Showing how different events from World War II became prominent in American cultural memory while others go forgotten or remain hidden in plain sight. The War Complex moves from war films and historical works to television specials and popular magazines to define the image and influence of World War II in our time. Torgovnick also explores the 1961 trial of Adolf Eichmann, the emotional legacy of the Holocaust, and the treatment of World War II's missing history by writers such as W.G. Sebald to reveal the unease we feel at our dependence on those who hold the power of total war."--Jacket

This volume examines some of the social changes which have led to this development, among them the passing of the two World Wars from survivor into cultural memory. Focusing on the politics of war memory and commemoration, the book illuminates the struggle to install particular memories at the centre of a cultural world, and offers an extensive argument about how the politics of commemoration practices should be understood

Sebald to reveal the unease we feel at our dependence on those who hold the power of total war."--Jacket

However, it is only far later, at the end of the 60's that Jewish characters, associated to the memory of the genocide, began to populate Duras' writings. At the same time, started a process of décommunisation in the same texts, a if the communist identity has been changed for the Jewish identity. At the end, the judaization concerned not only the writings, but also the author herself. However, it is more an appropriation of other's memory than a real "Judaization" of Duras, at the very moment when the memory of the genocide became fully recognized amongst the French society. This makes us think that one must place the "auto-judaization" of Duras in and identity-building process, aimed to fulfill her existential need. In this way, more than the question of culpability, when Duras call for "Auschwitz" again and again, we understand it as an attempt to build an Family novel which has the memory of the genocide as a basis

This interdisciplinary study shows how the emerging awareness of historicity shaped the concepts of modernity, identity, and culture in German thought around 1800 and how this awareness determined the German notion of the priority of cultural identity. By contextualising key texts from Sturm und Drang, Weimar Classicism, German Romanticism and German Idealism in relation to post-Enlightenment debates on historicity and modernity, the study reveals the Goethezeit to be far more intellectually coherent than has been previously assumed.
