    Thresholds of Meaning examines contemporary French narrative and explores two related issues: the centrality within recent French fiction and autofiction of the themes of passage, ritual and liminality; the thematic continuity which links this work with its literary ancestors of the 1960s and 1970s. Through the close analysis of novels and récits by Pierre Bergounioux, François Bon, Marie Darrieussecq, Hélène Lenoir, Laurent Mauvignier and Jean Rouaud, Duffy demonstrates the ways in which contemporary narrative, while capitalising on the formal lessons of the nouveau roman and drawing upon a shared repertoire of motifs and themes, engages with the complex processes by which meaning is produced in the referential world and, in particular, with the rituals and codes that social man brings into play in order to negotiate the various stages of the human life-cycle. By the application of theoretical concepts and models derived from anthropology and from visual studies, the study situates itself at the intersection of the developing field of literature and anthropology studies and research into word and image

    Immer wieder wird in der Forschung darauf hingewiesen, dass Raumkonzeption und Grenzziehung von hoher Bedeutung für Statius' ›Thebais‹ seien. Auch das große Interesse des Textes an Religion und Ritual wird öfters hervorgehoben. Beide Aspekte wurden allerdings bisher nur im Ansatz diskutiert und selten für die Deutung des Werkes fruchtbar gemacht. Die Aspekte von Ritual und Grenzraum verbinden sich bei Statius paradigmatisch in der Figur des Amphiaraus. In einem close reading der beiden umfangreichsten Amphiaraus-Episoden zeigt Nils Jäger, wie Statius Amphiaraus vom Seher auf dem Gipfel des Bergs Aphesas zum Sehergott der Erdspalte auf dem Schlachtfeld vor Theben werden lässt. Der Autor knüpft ein komplexes motivisches Netzwerk um diese Figur, welches die jähe Einfahrt des Sehers in die Unterwelt bespiegelt, mit weiterer Bedeutung auflädt und so zur zentralen Grenzüberschreitung der ›Thebais‹ werden lässt. Die Vogelschau des Amphiaraus und Melampus (Theb. 3) sowie das Gebet des Thiodamas (Theb. 8) erweisen sich als "Knotenpunkte" in diesem motivischen Netzwerk

    Eine Untersuchung von Werk und Biographie des frühen Heinrich Heine aus gleichermaßen philologischer, theologischer und judaistischer Sicht. »Lebe wohl, du heilge Schwelle […].« Mit diesen Worten sagt der junge Heinrich Heine im Sommer 1819 der Hansestadt Hamburg und all den Unerquicklichkeiten der vergangenen Zeit Adieu. Sieben Jahre später wiederholt er ein solches »Lebet wohl!« und setzt es programmatisch an den Anfang seiner Harzreise, seiner persönlichen Exodus-Erzählung. Heine ist ein Dichter der Übergänge. Als deutscher Jude befindet er sich in einem Zwiespalt zwischen seiner jüdischen Identität und einer antisemitisch geprägten nationalistisch-christlichen Gesellschaft. Im Juni 1825 lässt er sich in Heiligenstadt taufen, um seine Berufschancen zu verbessern, aber dieser Versuch, den Konflikt durch die Konversion zu lösen, scheitert kläglich. Allerdings gelingt es dem Dichter, die Identitätsschwebe zwischen den Welten zu einer Existenz- und Kunstform zu erheben. Er wird selbst zum Seismographen einer jungen jüdischen Generation, die vergeblich einen Ausweg aus dem »Bannkreis des Judentums« sucht. In welches Gelobte Land aber dieser Exodus führen soll, diese Frage variiert stark in Heines frühen Jahren und Schriften und schwankt zwischen Gegensätzen. Raphaela Brüggenthies behandelt die Jahre 1816 bis 1826 und spürt den Themen Konversion, Liminalität und Marginalität in Heines Leben und frühen Werken nach. Die Arbeit wurde mit dem »Kulturpreis Bayern 2021« ausgezeichnet.

    The Beat Generation questioned mid-twentieth century America and sought the margins of society. This book analyzes the literature and lifestyles of the Beat authors Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs, and Allen Ginsberg in regard to Victor Turner’s anthropological studies. The Beats separated from society by willingly entering the rites of passage. Liminal symbolism is apparent in their literature such as in movement, time, space, pilgrimages, and monstrosities. In their liminal stage, they established «communitas» and developed anti-structure. They questioned society and made proposals to change it in their liminoid literature. The Beats shared similarities with previous countercultures, and they influenced the following Hippie Generation.
