The alphabet as a device offers compilers and users of encyclopaedias and dictionaries an invaluable practical advantage in the efficient arrangement of large quantities of information. There are also texts in which authors make use of an alphabetical form because they are interested in it for its own sake and that of its implications: "literary" dictionaries and vocabulary lists, lexicon novels, encyclopaedic presentations of things which are primarily written about in order to include them in an alphabetically organised text, or which are even invented specifically to be presented in this way. This volume brings together the papers from a conference at the Ruhr University in Bochum on the theme of 'Lexicography as a cultural and literary form', which examine from various perspectives the relationships between the alphabet, concepts of the encyclopaedia, lexicographical processes and dictionary production, and the significance of all these for literature and art.--Supplied by publisher

Moving through Whitman's career four times from four different perspectives, this book investigates several major American cultural developments that occurred during Whitman's lifetime - the development of American dictionaries, the growth of baseball, the evolution of American Indian policy, the development of photography and photographic portraits - and tracks the ways these cultural actions became essential components of Whitman's innovative poetics Resisting the usual critical temptation to present a totalized, one-dimensional Whitman, this study views him instead as multiple and contradictory, a gatherer of discordant tones and clashing approaches from a variety of surprising cultural arenas. From Webster's and Worcester's continually expanding dictionaries, Whitman learned about the possibilities of an unbounded and infinitely absorptive language, out of which a new kind of expansive poetics could emerge. He saw in baseball the inception of a national sport, one that had a rhythm, movement, and ethos distinctively American, and in it he sensed the presence of the democratic crowds and camaraderie that he would celebrate in his poetry From the time of the Great Removal when he was a boy on through to the massacre at Wounded Knee just before his death, Whitman saw in American Indians an autochthonous otherness that he tried to absorb even as it vanished under the imperialistic hand of his expanding nation. And in photography, he found the technological counterpart of his poetics of wholeness and inclusiveness, offering the possibility of turning the world and his life into an endless series of cluttered representations. In such cultural activities, Whitman found not his poetic subjects so much as his poetic tools and techniques

"William Shakespeare's written vocabulary consisted of 17,245 words, including hundreds that were coined or popularized by him. Some of the words never went further than their appearance in his plays, but others...like bedazzled, hurry, critical, and anchovy...are essential parts of our standard vocabulary today. Many other famous and lesser-known writers have contributed to the popular lexicon. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, Sir Walter Scott ranks second to Shakespeare in first uses of words and giving a new and distinct meaning to already existing words (Free Lances for freelancers). John Milton minted such terms as earthshaking, lovelorn, by hook or crook, and all Hell broke loose, and was responsible for introducing some 630 words. Gifted lexicographer Paul Dickson deftly sorts through neologisms by Chaucer (a ha), Jane Austen (base ball), Louisa May Alcott (co-ed), Mark Twain (hard-boiled), Kurt Vonnegut (granfalloon), John le Carre (mole), William Gibson (cyberspace), and many others. Presenting stories behind each word and phrase, Dickson enriches our appreciation of the English language in a book as entertaining as it is enlightening"..
