    Personnage inverse du roi fondateur Brutus, Lei͏̈r fait bien figure de << premier roi >>, malgré le onzième rang qu'il occupe dans la liste des souverains légendaires de Bretagne ; à sa mort, il sera d'ailleurs enseveli dans un hypogée voué au culte du dieu Janus, qui marque le début de l'année. Sous son règne se rejoue le partage initial du royaume, qui échoue d'abord par la faute d'un contresens commis par le roi, mais finit par assurer à la cadette déshéritée le triomphe de sa piété filiale. Le corpus des textes rassemblés dans ce volume offre six variations sur le même thème, du récit fondateur de Geoffroy de Monmouth dans son Historia regum Britanniae jusqu'au détournement dans un << fabliau >> contaminant l'exemplum royal avec un exemplum bourgeois, qui figure en appendice d'une traduction en vers de la Disciplina clericalis. Tous les textes appartiennent aux XIIe et XIIIe siècles et proviennent exclusivement de l'aire culturelle normande et anglo-normande. S'ils constituent les plus anciennes attestations de la légende du roi Lei͏̈r, qui puise sa matière dans un vieux mythe indo-européen du roi associant le partage de son royaume à une épreuve, ils préfigurent aussi les élaborations futures, dont la plus célèbre demeure Le Roi Lear de Shakespeare au début du XVIIe siècle.
