    In de jaren 1909-1914 ontwikkelt de Franse kunstenaar Fernand Léger (1881-1955) zich tot een vooraanstaand kubist. Een belangrijke rol in Légers artistieke ontwikkeling speelt een reeks schilderijen die hij in 1911-1912 maakt, de zogenaamde Fumées sur les toits (Rook boven de daken). In deze reeks schildert Léger het uitzicht vanuit zijn atelier op de Parijse daken, met de rookpluimen uit de schoorstenen en in de verte de kathedraal Notre-Dame de Paris. De combinatie van de zachte vormen van de rookwolken en de harde en hoekige massa’s van de architectuur grijpt hij aan om radicaal te breken met de stijl van zijn vroegere werken. Van betrekkelijk realistisch en monochroom werkt hij naar steeds meer abstractie en kleur. Deze zoektocht resulteert uiteindelijk in zijn zo herkenbare kubistische werken. De Triton Collection Foundation bezit sinds 1999 Légers schilderij Le quatorze juillet (Veertien juli) uit 1912-1913. Op de achterzijde bevindt zich een voorstelling die zwaar beschadigd leek. Maar toen die enige jaren geleden nader bekeken werd, brachten onderzoek en restauratie door Gwendolyn Boevé-Jones een onbekend doek uit de reeks Fumées sur les toits tevoorschijn. De ontdekking vormt de aanleiding voor deze publicatie en een tentoonstelling in Kröller-Müller Museum, waarin ook aandacht wordt besteed aan de invloeden die Léger onderging van onder meer Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso en Georges Braque

    In de jaren 1909-1914 ontwikkelt de Franse kunstenaar Fernand Léger (1881-1955) zich tot een vooraanstaand kubist. Een belangrijke rol in Légers artistieke ontwikkeling speelt een reeks schilderijen die hij in 1911-1912 maakt, de zogenaamde Fumées sur les toits (Rook boven de daken). In deze reeks schildert Léger het uitzicht vanuit zijn atelier op de Parijse daken, met de rookpluimen uit de schoorstenen en in de verte de kathedraal Notre-Dame de Paris. De combinatie van de zachte vormen van de rookwolken en de harde en hoekige massa’s van de architectuur grijpt hij aan om radicaal te breken met de stijl van zijn vroegere werken. Van betrekkelijk realistisch en monochroom werkt hij naar steeds meer abstractie en kleur. Deze zoektocht resulteert uiteindelijk in zijn zo herkenbare kubistische werken. De Triton Collection Foundation bezit sinds 1999 Légers schilderij Le quatorze juillet (Veertien juli) uit 1912-1913. Op de achterzijde bevindt zich een voorstelling die zwaar beschadigd leek. Maar toen die enige jaren geleden nader bekeken werd, brachten onderzoek en restauratie door Gwendolyn Boevé-Jones een onbekend doek uit de reeks Fumées sur les toits tevoorschijn. De ontdekking vormt de aanleiding voor deze publicatie en een tentoonstelling in Kröller-Müller Museum, waarin ook aandacht wordt besteed aan de invloeden die Léger onderging van onder meer Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso en Georges Braque
