    The First Crusade (1095-1101) was the stimulus for a substantial boom in Western historical writing in the first decades of the twelfth century, beginning with the so-called "eyewitness" accounts of the crusade and extending to numerous second-hand treatments in prose and verse. From the time when many of these accounts were first assembled in printed form by Jacques Bongars in the early seventeenth century, and even more so since their collective appearance in the great nineteenth-century compendium of crusade texts, the Recueil des historiens des croisades, narrative histories have come to be regarded as the single most important resource for the academic study of the early crusade movement. But our understanding of these texts is still far from satisfactory. This ground-breaking volume draws together the work of an international team of scholars. It tackles the disjuncture between the study of the crusades and the study of medieval history-writing, setting the agenda for future research into historical narratives about or inspired by crusading. The basic premise that informs all the papers is that narrative accounts of crusades and analogous texts should not be primarily understood as repositories of data that contribute to a reconstruction of events, but as cultural artefacts that can be interrogated from a wide range of theoretical, methodological and thematic perspectives. Marcus Bull is Andrew W Mellon Distinguished Professor of Medieval and Early Modern Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Damien Kempf is Senior Lecturer in Medieval History at the University of Liverpool.     This collection brings together new work by an international cast of distinguished scholars, who explore areas as diverse as the military and ecclesiastical aspects of the First Crusade; its representation in contemporary sculpture; and the way it has been portrayed in modern fiction and film. Further contributions analyse and compare primary sources and historiography, and yet others consider the crusade in its Mediterranean context, which is sometimes overlooked. These definitive studies of established areas of research are augmented by the ground-breaking work of a number of early-career academics who are working in relatively new areas: the ‘emotional language’ used in the narrative sources; the memorialization of the crusades; and the use of literary sources for crusade studies: notably there are complementary papers on the heroes and villains depicted in the Old French poetic accounts of the First Crusade.     Dieses Buch analysiert das Gesamtwerk Friedrichs von Hausen. Es unterzieht dadurch die oftmals vorgenommenen biographischen und realhistorischen Kontextualisierungen der Lieder Friedrichs einer kritischen Revision. Die Untersuchung geht von der Prämisse der Fiktionalität des Minnesangs aus wie auch von der Annahme, dass die Integration der Kreuzzugsmotivik einen Grad an Komplexität generiert, der sich über die in der Forschung meist angenommene sozialhistorische Anbindung der Lieder nicht erfassen lässt. Dadurch wird die für das Verständnis der Lieder höchst relevante ästhetische Dimension herausgearbeitet. Im Vordergrund stehen dabei die handschriftennahe Edition ohne Konjekturalverfahren und die Analyse der Lieder. - In 18 Einzelanalysen kann gezeigt werden, dass das Kreuzzugsmotiv in Friedrichs von Hausen Werk nicht bloß eindimensional funktionalisiert ist. Es verweist somit nicht schlicht auf sein realhistorisches, politisch oder religiös motiviertes Pendant, sondern wird in seinen unterschiedlichen Aussagemöglichkeiten eingesetzt und damit in Kombination mit der Minnethematik in seiner Vielschichtigkeit erfahrbar gemacht.
