    Comparative welfare state research has argued for some time that it makes a difference in regards to the specific welfare state design whether Social Democrats or Christian Democrats are in government. The theory is based on the fact that historically the social policy aims of Social Democrats and Christian Democrats have differed. But can these policy differences still be assumed after almost three decades, which have been characterised by a discourse about necessary welfare state retrenchment, adaptation, and modification? More specifically, in which way have 'new'; ideas altered the social and economic policy concepts? We hypothesise that the differences among the two welfare state parties in formerly conservative welfare states have largely faded away. Moreover, we argue that, in the meantime Social Democrats as well as Christian Democrats pursue a more or less common liberal-communitarian approach in welfare state policies in these countries. Our study is based on an in-depth analysis of programmatic approaches by Social Democrats and Christian Democrats in Austria, Germany, and the Netherlands since 1975. Based on Christian-Democratic and Social Democratic ideal types, we pay special attention to the development of employment, social security, and family policies.

    This book presents the economic populism in British and American political discourse providing a current insight into the way Boris Johnson and Donald Trump communicate with the general public by raising fears over national security, immigration and technological advances. It shows how politicians asked for populism despite its poor economic record by using the same narrative of Conservatism. Unlike other books in the field which broadly discuss different aspects of populism, this book is the first in-depth analysis of economic populism containing political discourse studies. The recent populist discussion has started dominating the political arena in many countries. Hence, it seems that there is a need for a book that will explain the economic populism by showing its true nature.

    Abstract: "Nach der Parteiendifferenztheorie in der Wohlfahrtsstaatsforschung macht es einen Unterschied hinsichtlich der spezifischen Gestalt von Sozialpolitik, ob liberale (konservative), christdemokratische oder sozialdemokratische Parteien an der Macht sind. Entsprechend wäre nach einem politischen Machtwechsel ebenso ein Politikwechsel zu erwarten. Diese Theorie dient dem Arbeitspapier als Ausgangspunkt für die Analyse der rot-grünen Sozialpolitik der vergangenen vier Jahre. In einem ersten Schritt werden die sozialpolitischen Prioritäten sowie Politiken während der langen Herrschaft der christlich-liberalen Koalition vor dem Hintergrund der normativen und institutionellen Fundamente des deutschen Wohlfahrtsstaates in der Nachkriegszeit kurz skizziert, bevor in einem zweiten Schritt auf die sozialpolitische Programmatik der Sozialdemokratie sowie der Grünen eingegangen wird.     In recent years, differences between traditional and green parties have been leveled with respect to climate protection. We show that this partial convergence in party platforms can be explained by international climate agreements, effectively reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We set up a voting model in which political parties differ in their preferences for climate protection and in which (national) climate protection causes both resource costs and distortions in the international allocation of production. International agreements, which reduce greenhouse gas emissions, decrease effective abatement costs. This affects traditional parties in a different way than green parties, since a lower preference for climate protection implies a higher price (cost) elasticity of demand. Thus, climate agreements can lead to more political consensus within countries, even if politicians are partisans. We also point out that increasing flexibility and efficiency in abatement mechanisms is preferable to forming a climate coalition that focuses directly on emission reduction commitments. -- climate protection ; political economy ; green parties ; platform convergence
