    This is the first book on Cambodian literature to be written in English. It is a comprehensive guide to the Cambodian 'classical' literature, i.e. the literature written on palm-leaf or Chinese paper manuscripts between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. After the introduction there is a section on each of the ten genres, which include proverbs, riddles, and songs, and a description of the versification. An alphabetically arranged inventory of the authors, with all the details known about them, follows; then a similarly arranged list of works with details of manuscripts, metres etc, and with reference to the texts, versions and studies which are contained in the final part, the Bibliography. Two other sections provide resumes of the best-known folk tales and 'verse novels'.

    Ce livre offre les premiers résultats d'une enquête sur les pratiques et les représentations du passé chez les Khmers. Elle s'inscrit dans une réflexion sur la mémoire collective qui fait le choix d'un pas de côté, à distance de l'historiographie récente　traitant de cette question à l'intérieur d'une chronologie très restreinte, couvrant les 40 ans qui nous séparent du régime khmer rouge. Ici comme ailleurs, considérer les phénomènes de la vie sociale pour leur seule contemporanéité ou ériger les événements contemporains comme fondateurs à l'exclusion des autres ne permet guère une pleine compréhension du fonctionnement de la mémoire collective. Il n'est sans doute pas de problème plus complexe que celui du rapport qu'entretient, sur la durée, une société à son passé. À commencer par celui des mots qu'elle se choisit pour le dire et qui le déterminent en partie. Ceux que les auteurs ont tirés de la langue des locuteurs, des textes historiques et de l'exercice des rites suggèrent d'autres chemins à frayer. Une dizaine d'articles de linguistes, d'historiens et d'ethnologues nous invitent ici à les parcourir, en regard des expériences du passé propres aux mondes indien et européen

    Religionen entwerfen spezifische Geschlechterbilder und transportieren diese durch eine Vielzahl visueller Medien in die Gesellschaft. Kristin H. Purfürst richtet den Fokus auf Entwürfe weiblicher Rollenmodelle in thailändisch-buddhistischen Tempelmalereien und erfragt die Entstehung weiblicher Stereotype im Prozess wechselseitiger Einflussnahme zwischen Religion und Gesellschaft. Zugleich stellt der Band ein grundlegendes methodisches Instrumentarium für die Analyse visueller nonverbaler Quellen aus religionswissenschaftlicher Perspektive bereit. Durch die interdisziplinäre Fragestellung werden Themen der Genderforschung, südostasiatischen Religions- und Kunstgeschichte sowie der religionswissenschaftlichen Methodik erstmalig verknüpft. Religions design specific gender images and transport them into society through a variety of visual media. Kristin H. Purfürst focuses on designs of female role models in Thai Buddhist temple paintings and inquires about the emergence of female stereotypes in a process of mutual influence between religion and society. At the same time, the volume provides a basic set of methodological tools for the analysis of visual non-verbal sources from a religious studies perspective. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the problem, topics of gender studies, Southeast Asian religious and art history as well as the methodology of religious studies are linked for the first time.
