Abstract: Canadian novels have witnessed a movement from description to more different analytical and interpretative directions. Margaret Atwood's oeuvres are belonged to the postmodern literary field of feminist writing. Her fictions show a severe alertness of the relationship between chains and slavery, i.e. between women's requirement for relationships with others and her requirements for freedom and autonomy. In this paper, The Handmaid's Tale, Bodily Harm, Surfacing, and The Edible Woman will be surveyed in a direct relationship between politics, violence and victimization of female protagonists. An examination on Margaret Atwood's novels demonstrates that she is pioneer in the dimension of time by being a revolter against the patriarchal society

Abstract: Love is used in different ways in literature. The treatment of love in the love stories of Janette Oke are nearly similar and all show the roles that love plays in life of people and how deal with it. Her novels are among the finest works in Canadian literature without whom the world of Canadian literature would be dark and empty. Love is the eventual weakness, but philosophy, religion and art during time have portrayed it in its place as a way to a higher level of being beyond the pain and transformation of every day. This paper points out to different kinds of love relationship in Oke's fictions

Abstract: While phrases such as ‘Capitaine Crounche’ and ‘beurre d’arachide’ are familiar to, and easily taken for granted by, most English Canadians, who tend to encounter linguistic duality in their daily lives in a number of ways, the politics underlying such seemingly harmless words are significant. Indeed, no other issue has played as central a role in Canadian social and political development as has language, with French-English linguistic tensions and considerations affecting numerous aspects of Canadian life, including foreign policy, the awarding of government contracts and indeed, the labelling of food packaging. While much public and scholarly attention has been paid to the language issue and the francophone population of Québec, less has been paid to language and francophones outside of the main concentration of Canada’s French speakers. While geographically dispersed, and vastly outnumbered, Canada’s francophone minority communities and their identities are nevertheless an impor

Abstract: The largely unregulated early years of Canadian radio were vital to development of broadcasting policy. The Report of the Royal Commission on Radio Broadcasting in 1929 and American broadcasting both changed the direction of Canadian broadcasting, but were mitigated by the early, largely unregulated years. Broadcasters operated initially as small, independent, and local broadcasters, then, national networks developed in stages during the 1920s and 1930s. The late adoption of radio broadcasting policy to build a national network in Canada allowed other practices to take root in the wake of other examples, in particular, American commercial broadcasting. By 1929 when the Aird Report recommended a national network, the potential impact of the report was shaped by the path of early broadcasting and the shifts forced on Canada by American broadcasting and policy. Eventually Canada forged its own course that pulled in both directions, permitting both private commercial networks and publi

  10. Depicting the climate-changing Arctic in theatre: polar bears, humanity, and the breath of life

In my thesis I analyze the climate change plays Sila (2015) and The Breathing Hole (2017). These plays are set in the Arctic and were written by Canadian playwrights, and both feature polar bears as important roles. Climate change activists are criticizing the fact that polar bears are the face of climate change, even though it should be treated as a humanitarian crisis that already affects Inuit and other indigenous tribes living in the Arctic. Therefore, in the media and in the arts, the crisis should be portrayed as affecting humans first and foremost. In my thesis, I argue that polar bears play an important role in climate change theatre. I am giving an introduction to the theory of sympathy and how it can be influenced by geographical distance and cultural differences, and analyze the importance of theatre as a form of art that has the power to call an audience to action. Based on reception theory, I then argue that polar bears in climate change plays are used in connection with humanization and interconnectedness in order to stir the audience towards feeling sympathy for the animals and rowards wanting to become active in climate change activism--a process that I illustrate with examples of these strategies in both plays. Furthermore, I also highlight how polar bears help bridge the cultural gap between Inuit characters and the Western audience in these plays, and conclude that as for climate change plays, these animals also have the ability to foreground the humanity that needs to be displayed in order to actively fight climate change.

CanLit–the commonly used short form for English Canadian Literature as a cultural formation and industry—has been at the heart of several recent public controversies. Why? Because CanLit is breaking open to reveal the accepted injustices at its heart. It is imperative that these public controversies and the issues that sparked them be subject to careful and thorough discussion and critique. Refuse provides a critical and historical context to help readers understand conversations happening about CanLit presently. One of its goals is to foreground the perspectives of those who have been changing the conversation about what CanLit is and what it could be. Topics such as literary celebrity, white power, appropriation, class, rape culture, and the ongoing impact of settler colonialism are addressed by a diverse gathering of writers from across Canada. This volume works to avoid a single metanarrative response to these issues, but rather brings together a cacophonous multitude of voices.

Exploring representations of queer aging in North American fiction, this book illuminates a rich yet previously unheeded intersection within American culture. At a time when older LGBTQ persons gradually gain visibility in gerontological studies and in the media, this work provides a critical perspective concerned with the ways in which the narratives and images we have at our disposal shape our realities. Each chapter shines a spotlight on a significant work of queer fiction, beginning with post-WWII novels and ending with filmic representations of the 2010s, exploring narratives as both reflections and agents of broader cultural negotiations concerning queer sexuality and aging. As a result, the book not only redresses queer aging’s history of invisibility, but also reveals narratives of queer aging to be particularly apt in casting new light on the ways in which growing older is perceived and conceptualized in North American culture.

This diploma thesis explores the family structures and culture conflicts in Chinese-Canadian narratives of migration. The discussed narratives are the short stories ``Cold Food'' and ``The Lucky Wedding'' by Judy Fong Bates, ``Simple Recipes'' by Madelein Thien, ``Prairie Night 1939'' by Paul Yee and the novels Diary of a Street Kid by Evelyn Lau, Disappearing Moon Café by Sky Lee, The Concubine's Children by Denise Chong as well as Amy Chua's provocative bestseller on education Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother. The thesis first offers a short introduction to the history of the Chinese in Canada, followed by aspects of Chinese-Canadian immigrant literature. The first chapter focuses on the story of migration which is an integral part in all the narratives discussed. It is followed by a discussion of the family structures and traditions as they are reflected in the respective narratives. In the center of the next section is the topic of food which is a significant part of the Chinese culture and an important link to their native country China. The chapter ``Education and Occupation'' deals with the narrative mediation of the daily lives of Chinese-Canadian immigrants in Canada: What kind of jobs do they pursue? What are their children doing in Canada? The final chapter is dedicated to the intercultural conflicts and problems rendered in the discussed narratives. This thesis aims to demonstrate that all works discussed here portray the underlying topic of conflict, especially in relation to culture. Despite their best efforts to fight off Canadian influences, immigrant families portrayed in the works of Chong, Fong Bates, Lau, Lee, Thien and Yee cannot keep their Chinese culture separated from outside influences.

This thesis focuses on aspects of regionalism and examines how the region of Atlantic Canada is portrayed in various short stories by Atlantic Canadian authors. Atlantic Canada is a region that is often seen as a beautiful, picturesque holiday destination, whereas in literature many of the more problematic aspects that afflict this region are taken up in a critical manner. The Maritimes went through a phase of huge economic decline starting after the First World War and ever since the economic situation in Atlantic Canada has been rather problematic. The region heavily depends on tourism and there is a lack of jobs, which leads to numerous people leaving the region every year. In the theoretical chapter of this thesis regionalism is described. The central focus in the following chapters is on short stories from Atlantic Canada and their depiction of regional aspects. The short stories dealt with in the thesis are exclusively written by authors from Atlantic Canada, such as Alistair MacLeod, Lesley Choyce, Sheldon Currie, Lynn Coady, Michael Crummey, Wayne Johnston and Lisa Moore. To narrow the scope of the thesis, only two Atlantic Canadian provinces, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, are concentrated on. The short stories portray the lives of Atlantic Canadians, the social and economic difficulties the region and the people living there are facing, the harsh environment in which people live and many more aspects of living in Atlantic Canada. Further, the thesis depicts the opinions of experts on the field of regionalism and Atlantic Canadian literature. The experts were interviewed and various questions from the interviews are discussed in the thesis. The last chapter of the thesis is based on a survey which was done with students at the University of New Brunswick. The students taking part filled out a questionnaire on Atlantic Canadian short stories and the importance of region. The evaluation of these questionnaires is summarised and discussed in the thesis.
