    Die Studie widmet sich der Erforschung der deutschsprachigen jüdischen Autobiographie im 20. Jahrhundert. Nach einem Überblick, der die Autobiographietradition im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert beleuchtet, werden die spezifischen Bedingungen der jüdischen Autobiographie, die seit dem Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts entsteht, herausgearbeitet. Im Hauptteil widmet sich die Arbeit der Einzeluntersuchung von autobiographischen Texten von Jakob Wassermann, Werner Kraft, Gershom Scholem, Max Fürst, Ernst Toller, Ludwig Greve, Ruth Klüger und Georges-Arthur Goldschmidt. The study is concerned with research into 20th century Jewish autobiography written in German. After an overview illuminating the tradition of autobiographical writing in the 19th and 20th centuries, the study develops the specific conditions of Jewish autobiography, which has been in existence since the end of the 18th century. The main section of the work is given over to individual studies of autobiographical texts by Jakob Wassermann, Werner Kraft, Gershom Scholem, Max Fürst, Ernst Toller, Ludwig Greve, Ruth Klüger and Georges-Arthur Goldschmidt.

    Im Mittelpunkt der Studie zur Monatsschrift »Die Freistatt« (1913/14) stehen ihre Programmatik und Literaturkonzeption. Die Revue propagiert als einziges deutsch-jüdisches Periodikum eine 'alljüdische' Richtung, die sich einerseits vom liberalen, andererseits vom zionistischen Judentum in Deutschland abgrenzt. Geprägt ist dieses Konzept insbesondere durch Fritz Mordechai Kaufmann (1888-1921), dessen Leben und Werk in dieser Arbeit einen Schwerpunkt bilden. This study of the monthly journal »Die Freistatt« (1913/1914) concentrates on its programmatic objectives and its concept of literature. The review was the only German-Jewish periodical to represent a 'pan-Judaic' approach, distinguishing it both from liberal and Zionist Judaism in Germany at that time. This approach is largely attributable to the influence of Fritz Mordechai Kaufmann (1888-1921), whose life and work is another major subject the study focuses on.     This interdisciplinary volume looks at one of the central cultural practices within the Jewish experience: translation. With contributions from literary and cultural scholars, historians, and scholars of religion, the book considers different aspects of Jewish translation, starting from the early translations of the Torah, to the modern Jewish experience of migration, state-building and life in the Diaspora. The volume addresses the question of how Jews have used translation to pursue different cultural and political agendas, such as Jewish nationalism, the development of Yiddish as a literary language, and the collection of Holocaust testimonies. It also addresses how non-Jews have translated elements of the Judaic tradition to create an image of the Other. Covering a wide span of contexts, including religion, literature, photography, music and folk practices, and featuring an interview section with authors and translators, the volume will be of interest not only to scholars of Jewish studies, translation and cultural studies, but also a wider interested audience.

Im Hauptteil widmet sich die Arbeit der Einzeluntersuchung von autobiographischen Texten von Jakob Wassermann, Werner Kraft, Gershom Scholem, Max Fürst, Ernst Toller, Ludwig Greve, Ruth Klüger und Georges-Arthur Goldschmidt. The study is concerned with research into 20th century Jewish autobiography written in German. After an overview illuminating the tradition of autobiographical writing in the 19th and 20th centuries, the study develops the specific conditions of Jewish autobiography, which has been in existence since the end of the 18th century. The main section of the work is given over to individual studies of autobiographical texts by Jakob Wassermann, Werner Kraft, Gershom Scholem, Max Fürst, Ernst Toller, Ludwig Greve, Ruth Klüger and Georges-Arthur Goldschmidt.

    The multilingualism and polyphony of Jewish literary writing across the globe demands a collaborative, comparative, and interdisciplinary investigation into questions regarding methods of researching and teaching literatures. Disseminating Jewish Literatures compiles case studies that represent a broad range of epistemological and textual approaches to the curricula and research programs of literature departments in Europe, Israel, and the United States. In doing so, it promotes the integration of Jewish literatures into national philologies and the implementation of comparative, transnational approaches to the reading, teaching, and researching of literatures. Instead of a dichotomizing approach, Disseminating Jewish Literatures endorses an exhaustive, comprehensive conceptualization of the Jewish literary corpus across languages. Included in this volume are essays on literatures in Arabic, English, French, German, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish, as well as essays reflecting the fields of Yiddish philology and Latin American studies. The volume is based on the papers presented at the Gentner Symposium funded by the Minerva Foundation, held at the Freie Universität Berlin in June 2018.

This study of the monthly journal »Die Freistatt« (1913/1914) concentrates on its programmatic objectives and its concept of literature. The review was the only German-Jewish periodical to represent a 'pan-Judaic' approach, distinguishing it both from liberal and Zionist Judaism in Germany at that time. This approach is largely attributable to the influence of Fritz Mordechai Kaufmann (1888-1921), whose life and work is another major subject the study focuses on.     This publication uncovers two previously dismissed pre-modern adaptations of the Middle High German Wigalois (1215) by exploring their different approaches to female agency in comparison with the original Wigalois, the Yiddish Viduvilt (14th ct.) and the German Wigoleis (15th ct.). Traditionally, scholarship often concentrated on the Yiddish text presenting female figures as behaving in a "Jewish manner" or embodying famous Jewish mythical figures such as Lilith (see Achim Jaeger / Robert G. Warnock). Rather than trying to argue for or against a figure’s "Jewishness," I evaluate these interpretations from the perspective of Arthurian Literature by showing that the construction of female agency is at the center of all three adaptations of this important chapter of German-Jewish literature and culture.

    The use of an alphabetic script links the Jewish, Christian and Muslim cultures in the Middle Ages. There have always been intensive interrelationships between the religions of these cultures, inter alia through translations of important (sacred) texts.
