    The notion of 'self' and 'other' and its representation in artwork and literature is an important theme in current cultural sciences as well as in our everyday life in contemporary Western societies. Moreover, the concept of 'self' and 'other' and its imaginary dichotomy is gaining more and more political impact in a world of resurfacing ideology-ridden conflicts. The essays deal with Jewish reality in contemporary Germany and its reflection in movies from the special point of view of cultural sciences, political sciences, and religious studies. This anthology presents challengingly new insights into topics rarely covered, such as youth culture or humor, and finally discusses the images of Jewish life as realities still to be constructed.     Ernst Lissauer (1882–1937), Autor des berüchtigten „Haßgesangs gegen England“, gehört zu den stark assimilierten deutschen ‚Juden‘, die unter dem Antisemitismus mehr als Deutsche denn als Juden litten. Lissauer empfand sich zeitlebens ausschließlich als ‚deutsch‘, trat jedoch für ein ‚Deutschtum‘ ein, das auf Kultur, Geschichte und Territorium statt ‚Rasse‘ beruhte. Seine Wertvorstellungen und Ideale weisen gleichwohl große Nähe zu denen deutsch-völkischer Kreise auf. Die religiösen Vorstellungen des Dichters waren geprägt von den Ideen Arthur Bonus‘, der eine „Germanisierung des Christentums“ propagierte.Die Studie erschließt seine Weltanschauung und Identitätskonstruktion, die Position Lissauers zwischen ‚Deutschtum‘ und ‚Judentum‘ sowie Grundtendenzen des Werks, das im Umfeld der Neuromantik und des frühen Expressionismus zu verorten ist. Dazu dient auch die kommentierte Edition des Briefwechsels mit Walter A. Berendsohn, dem „Nestor“ der deutschen Exilliteraturforschung, aus den Jahren 1935–1937.

    Despite the impressive strides made in the past century in the understanding of Second Temple Jewish history and the strong scholarly interest in paideia within ancient Greek, Hellenistic, Roman, and late antique Christian cultures, the nature of Jewish paideia during the period has, until recently, received surprisingly little attention. The essays collected here were first offered for discussion at the Fifth Enoch Seminar Nangeroni Meeting, held in Naples, Italy, from June 30 – July 4, 2015, the purpose of which was to gain greater insight into the diversity of views of Jewish education during the period, both in Judea and Diaspora communities, by viewing them in light of their contemporary Greco-Roman backgrounds and Ancient Near Eastern influences. Together, they represent the broad array of approaches and specialties required to comprehend this complex and multi-faceted subject, and they demonstrate the fundamental importance of the topic for a fuller understanding of the period. The volume will be of particular interest to students and scholars of the history and culture of the Jewish people during the Hellenistic and Roman periods, ancient education, and Greek and Roman history.
