    Mobility at Large explores a unique trajectory of travel writing. Instead of focussing on best-selling travel texts by Paul Theroux, Bill Bryson, Michael Palin, Alain de Botton and others, this book examines a strand of innovative contemporary travel writing wherein the authors experiment with form, content and the politics of representation. In this, innovative travel texts by a range of writers – from Michael Ondaatje and Caryl Phillips to Daphne Marlatt and Sam Miller – transform the genre by inscribing travel, migration, mobility and displacement within a variety of experimental textual strategies to work through questions of movement and the politics of personal identity in relation to the complex interlocutions of space, place and subjectivity. As a result, Mobility at Large challenges those critics who dismiss the genre as inherently conservative and inextricably bound up in a colonial, Eurocentric tradition. The book also documents a long and rich tradition of travel writing that existed well beyond the influence of Europe

    Abstract ; Im Sommer 2016 hat der aus acht Teilprojekten der Freien Universität Berlin, der Ruhr-Universität Bochum und der Universität Zürich (siehe Anhang) bestehende Verbund der DFG-Forschergruppe 2305 „Diskursivierungen von Neuem. Tradition und Novation in Texten des Mittelalters und der Frühen Neuzeit“ für zunächst drei Jahre seine Arbeit aufgenommen. Wichtige Aspekte und Fragestellungen sollen in der hiermit eröffneten Reihe der Working Papers des Verbundes dargestellt werden. Das vorliegende Working Paper Nr. 1 möchte die grundsätzliche Problematik skizzieren, die gemäß dem bei der DFG erfolgreich eingereichten Verbundantrag den Ausgangspunkt der gemeinsamen Arbeit bildet, und es möchte in Grundzügen die Struktur und das Arbeitsprogramm der gesamten Gruppe vorstellen. Das Paper basiert auf dem von den Mitgliedern des Verbunds gemeinsam ausformulierten Rahmentext des FOR-Antrags.

    Mark Goble revisits the aesthetics of modernism in the early twentieth century, when new modes of communication made the experience of technology an occasion for profound experimentation and reflection. Goble shows how the assimilation of such "old" media technologies as the telegraph, telephone, and phonograph inspired fantasies of connection that informed a commitment to the materiality of artistic mediums.     This study analyzes the effects of public R&D policy schemes on the innovation activities of firms located in Eastern Germany. The main question in this context is whether public funds stimulate R&D activities or simply crowd out privately financed R&D. Empirically, we investigate the average causal effects of all public R&D schemes in Eastern Germany using a nonparametric matching approach. Compared to the case where no public financial means are provided, it turns out that firms increase their innovation activities by about four percentage points.
