    Denkanstöße zur Debatte, wie sich Europa gegenüber der Türkei verhalten könnte bzw. sollte, möchten die Autor/-innen (Journalisten, Historiker, Verleger) dieses Sammelbandes geben, der in Folge einer 2005 in Berlin veranstalteten Konferenz ("Modell Türkei") zusammengestellt wurde. Er versammelt versierte Stimmen aus der Türkei (u.a. Orhan Pamuk) und aus Deutschland (u.a. Cem Özdemir) zur Frage, wie sich die Türkei in eine pluralistische, demokratische Gesellschaft wandeln kann, ohne ihre religiöse Grundhaltung zu verlieren.     Examining the 1993 split of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in Japan offers an opportunity to gain greater insight into the impact of the various incentives that influence the behaviour of politicians. Surprisingly, previous analyses of the LDP split have been able to demonstrate only weak evidence of any electoral connection driving politicians' decisions. However, by also examining the role of policy preferences (support for reform) and utilizing interaction terms, our analysis takes into account the fact that politicians at different stages in their careers and facing different sorts of electorates respond to electoral factors in very different ways. Our findings thus confirm the importance of the electoral connection. We are also able to add that a variety of other incentives also shape political behaviour and that politicians do not necessarily all respond to similar stimuli in the same way. Die positive Darstellung des 1936 verstorbenen Kommunisten Liu Zhidan provozierte nicht nur den Unmut des ZK-Sekretärs Kang Sheng, sondern auch kritische Äußerungen des Vorsitzenden Mao Zedong, der das Schreiben derartiger Romane als "Anti-Partei-Aktivität" charakterisierte, da er hierin u. a. einen Versuch zur Rehabilitierung Gao Gangs vermutete. Historischer Hintergrund war ein innerparteilicher Fraktionskampf in der Endphase des Langen Marsches, 1935, in den u. a. Liu Zhidan und der 1954 gestürzte Gao Gang verwickelt waren. Die Anfang der sechziger Jahre auf einen kleinen Kreis beschränkte Kontroverse eskalierte mit Beginn der Kulturrevolution (1966) und die wichtigsten Opfer (wie Xi Zhongxun) wurden erst Ende der siebziger Jahre rehabilitiert. 1979 begann schließlich die vollständige Veröffentlichung des mehrbändigen Romans.     When do rebel leaders “sell out” their constituents in the terms of peace by signing agreements that benefit group elites over the rebel constituency, and when do they instead “stand firm,” pushing for settlement terms that benefit the public they claim to represent? This article examines variation in the design of civil war settlement agreements. It argues that constituents, fighters, and rebel elites have different preferences over the terms of peace, and that rebel leaders will push for settlements that reflect the preferences of whichever audience they are most reliant on and accountable to. In particular, leaders of groups that are more civilian-reliant for their military and political power are more likely to sign agreements that favor broad benefits for civilian constituents, while leaders who do not depend on civilian support for their political and military power will sign agreements with fewer public benefits. We test this argument using original data on the design of all final peace agreements reached between 1989 and 2009, and several proxies for the group's level of reliance on civilian supporters. Using a variety of statistical tests and accounting for nonrandom selection into peace agreements, we find strong support for our hypothesis.
