    Interviews with female gamers about structural sexism across the gaming landscapeWhen the Nintendo Wii was released in 2006, it ushered forward a new era of casual gaming in which video games appealed to not just the stereotypical hardcore male gamer, but also to a much broader, more diverse audience. However, the GamerGate controversy six years later, and other similar public incidents since, laid bare the internalized misogyny and gender stereotypes in the gaming community. Today, even as women make up nearly half of all gamers, sexist assumptions about the what and how of women's gaming are more actively enforced.In Gaming Sexism, Amanda C. Cote explores the video game industry and its players to explain this contradiction, how it affects female gamers, and what it means in terms of power and gender equality. Across in-depth interviews with women-identified gamers, Cote delves into the conflict between diversification and resistance to understand their impact on gaming, both casual and "core" alike. From video game magazines to male reactions to female opponents, she explores the shifting expectations about who gamers are, perceived changes in gaming spaces, and the experiences of female gamers amidst this gendered turmoil. While Cote reveals extensive, persistent problems in gaming spaces, she also emphasizes the power of this motivated, marginalized audience, and draws on their experiences to explore how structural inequalities in gaming spaces can be overcome. Gaming Sexism is a well-timed investigation of equality, power, and control over the future of technology

    Karl Aloys Schenzingers Roman Anilin ist nach Mein Kampf der zweitgrößte deutschsprachige Bestseller der Jahre zwischen 1933 und 1945. Anders als Hitlers autobiographische Propagandaschrift ist der Roman über die Geschichte der Farbstoffchemie, den Millionen Menschen gelesen haben, bisher kaum erforscht. Die vorliegende Studie rekonstruiert anhand von Anilin und anderen erfolgreichen „Büchern mit Stoffbezug“, deren Thema die Syntheseprodukte, Kunstfasern, Medikamente und vieles andere sind, wie durch diese Stoffe ein neuartiges Verhältnis zum eigenen ‚deutschen‘ Raum entsteht. Die Populärkultur im Umfeld der NS-Wirtschaftspolitik wird als Akteurin eines deutschen Kolonialismus ohne Kolonien identifiziert und die hier erstmals erforschte Textsorte der „Bücher mit Stoffbezug“ als zentral beteiligt erkannt. Dadurch wird die Lücke in der Erforschung der deutschen Kolonialgeschichte zwischen der Machtübergabe und den Angriffskriegen des Zweiten Weltkriegs weiter geschlossen.

    The present study assesses how governance affects information and communication technology at the global level contingent on macroeconomic policy factors such as trade, foreign investment, manufacturing value added and agriculture value added. The focus of the study is on 183 countries for the period 2003 to 2021 and the empirical evidence is based on the generalised method of moments. The following main findings are established. For the full sample, governance unconditionally promotes ICT development while trade openness (industrial added value) moderate governance to promote (dampen) ICT development. In sub-Saharan Africa, only trade openness effectively moderates governance to induce an overall positive effect on ICT while in the MENA, all policy variables moderate governance for an overall positive incidence on ICT sector development. The findings of the MENA are confirmed in the ECA region with the exception of the moderating role of industrial added values which engenders an overall negative effect. In the East & South Asia and the Pacific (ESAP) countries, one overall positive incidence is apparent in the role of trade openness while net negative effects are established from the moderating roles of industrial added value and agricultural added value, respectively. In the American sub-sample, a positive (negative) net effect is apparent from the role of industrial added value (trade) in moderating the incidence of governance on ICT sector development. Policy implications are discussed.

    Die Biotechnologie ist eine wissensintensive Querschnittstechnologie, der große Wachstumspotenziale zuerkannt werden. Derzeit weist die Anwendung der Biotechnologie in der Pharmazeutischen Industrie und Medizin (rote Biotechnologie) weltweit die größte Wachstumsdynamik auf. Deutschland ist erst Mitte der 1990er Jahre mit dem BioRegio-Wettbewerb nennenswert in die Kommerzialisierung der Biotechnologie eingestiegen. Mit dem Analyseansatz nationales Innovationssystem der roten Biotechnologie wird Deutschland vergleichend mit Großbritannien, Indien und Israel untersucht. Es werden die Spezifika der jeweiligen Länder im Hinblick auf notwendige und fördernde Bedingungen für die Entwicklung der roten Biotechnologie herausgearbeitet und bewertet. Nach den Untersuchungsergebnissen hat im Vergleich der vier Länder Großbritannien die ausgereifteste Biotechnologieindustrie im Anwendungsgebiet Pharmazie und Medizin. Das britische Innovationssystem der roten Biotechnologie hat derzeit mehr Stärken als Schwächen. Das deutsche Innovationssystem der roten Biotechnologie ist insgesamt wettbewerbsfähig, wobei Deutschland einen Wettbewerbsvorteil in den Bereichen Diagnostik und Produktion hat.
