    "In October 1998, on the occasion of the first conference on design education, Richard Buchanan, then Director of The School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University, envisioned doctoral education in Design as a ""neoteric enterprise"", aimed at finding novel ways of addressing the new problems, ""thereby creating a new body of learning and knowledge"". Twenty years after, these words can still be shared: the new problems affecting our globalised, bewildered and worried society are growing in numbers and in complexity, and novel ways of sorting them out are more sought-after than ever.

    The present book is part of a series that, since 2017, documents the production of the Politecnico di Milano Design Programme, presenting a summary of the doctoral theses defended each year. Eleven essays are here gathered into four sections: Design Education; Collaborative Processes; Cultural and Creative Companies; Technology for Social Change. In the variety of the researched topics, a common trait can be found in the continuous need of updated ways of addressing complex problems. It is such need that drives the evolving boundaries of design research forward, not just within our Doctoral Programme, but within all the national and international Doctoral Programmes in Design we are acquainted with."

    Displaying a talent for combining aesthetic sensibility with scientific rigor, the author has given new life to something that once excited European passions: an original, non-academic art at the forefront of the ‘new technology’ of the time. For decades, aristocrats of the Old World and then American collectors (the latter at the end of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth centuries) spent countless sums on the purchase of these works, which were worth a fortune. These wealthy collectors of curiosities of all types were also most certainly great dreamers seeking a worthy setting for their dreams. Unbeknownst to them, their endeavours had much greater scope, creating and nourishing the conditions for a rare encounter between two worlds: a golden age of atypical collaboration, a combined adventure between China and Europe.

Man will politisches Design machen, will als Akteur gesellschaftlicher Veränderungen wahrgenommen werden, zuweilen wohl gar die neue Leitdisziplin des urbanen Wandels werden. Unter einem erweiterten Designbegriff stellt sich daher die Frage: Was heißt es, im Sinne eines öffentlichen Interesses zu gestalten? Und vielleicht noch mehr: Was heißt es, das öffentliche Interesse selbst zu gestalten? Die Beiträge des Bandes gehen dieser Frage nach und zeigen: Ein solcher Anspruch ist eine Anmaßung – ob es eine wohltuende Anmaßung ist, hängt in erster Linie von der kritischen Hinterfragung der Grundidee ab.     The progressive ageing of the global population is on the one hand a goal of today's society, and at the same time one of the main socio-economic problems of health and pension systems. The transition from hospitalization to home treatment seems to be a first concrete response. The main reasons that push towards the strengthening of home care are also favoured by new technologies applied to health care that aim to contain public spending, through the implementation of innovative services, including medical devices to use at home. At the same time, the increase in risk conditions caused by the complexity of hospital care requires greater attention and immediate intervention, as represented by a study conducted by two researchers at John Hopkins University, who have shown that medical errors are the third leading cause of mortality in America. This volume is addressed to designers, students of Design courses and all those who address the disciplines of the project. To give them a better understanding of the theoretical-practical course described in the book, this has been divided into two parts. The first part, theory, is dedicated to the description of the current scenario in its multiple aspects - diverging phase -, aimed at defining two design strategies that can be used during the development process of a medical product, both for hospital and home use - converging phase -, as described in the second part, dedicated to practice and experimentation.

    Die Theorie der Produktsprache stellte einen Paradigmenwechsel in der Designtheorie dar. An der Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) Offenbach in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren entwickelt, erweiterte sie das funktionalistische Verständnis von Produkten hinsichtlich ihrer Zeichenhaftigkeit und Bedeutungsdimension. Dieser Band macht wichtige historische Dokumente aus dieser Zeit wieder zugänglich und kontextualisiert sie mit Interviews und Stellungnahmen von Zeitzeugen. Die Aktualität der Produktsprache, auch als wesentlicher Bestandteil der Lehre im Design, wird von Expertinnen und Experten aus Theorie und Praxis diskutiert. Als Ausblick werden aktuelle Forschungsfragen im Zusammenhang mit einer Weiterentwicklung der Theorie der Produktsprache formuliert.

Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes leiten daraus ein Verhältnis von Literatur- und Kunstwissenschaft zu ihren Gegenständen ab, das nicht zuletzt zu einer neuen Aufmerksamkeit für die skripturale und typographische Materialität und Medialität der Literatur führt. Dabei geht es um die Theorie der Reflexion und die Praxis der Erzeugung einer je spezifischen Buch-Ästhetik.

Unsere Antwort auf die Frage, wie sich das Wahre, Schöne und Gute zum Durchbruch bringen lässt, ist eine Frage: Wie können wir den Schaden maximieren? Sie ist nichts anderes als das notwendige Korrektiv der Frage »Wie können wir den Nutzen vergrößern?« Erst Grenzen ermöglichen Freiheit. Die Beiträge des Bandes zeigen: Wenn auf beide Fragen die gleichen Antworten kommen, kann die Lust am Gestalten losgehen.
