    Digitale Technologien und Methoden haben in den vergangenen Jahren immer mehr Einfluss auf die geisteswissenschaftliche Forschung gewonnen. Dies gilt nicht minder für das achtzehnte Jahrhundert: In allen einschlägigen Fachbereichen werden seit Jahren Texte, Bilder und Metadaten digital generiert, verarbeitet, analysiert und präsentiert. Ergebnis ist eine bisher nie dagewesene Konfrontation mit quantifizierenden Methoden auch in qualitativ arbeitenden Disziplinen sowie die Notwendigkeit einer Auseinandersetzung mit nationalen und globalen Datenstandards. Diese Standards entscheiden über die Interoperabilität – gewissermaßen die internationale Anschlussfähigkeit – der Daten und somit über die Nachhaltigkeit der eigenen Forschung.Die Österreichische Gesellschaft zur Erforschung des achtzehnten Jahrhunderts widmet ihr 34. Jahrbuch 2019 dem Thema der digitalen Forschung zum 18. Jahrhundert in Zentraleuropa. Die einzelnen vorgestellten Beiträge sind nicht nur Projektberichte, sondern referieren die Ergebnisse digital durchgeführter Forschungsarbeit. Sie eröffnen ein Panorama der möglichen methodischen Zugänge, von den Bildwissenschaften über Netzwerkanalyse und -darstellung hin zu digitaler Edition, Korpuslinguistik und digitaler Sprachwissenschaft sowie der Vernetzung von Forschungsdaten mit den Daten von Kulturerbe-Institutionen. Angaben zur beteiligten Person Wallnig: Thomas Wallnig, Privatdozent, Obmann der Österreichischen Gesellschaft zur Erforschung des 18. Jahrhunderts. Angaben zur beteiligten Person Romberg: Dr. Marion Romberg ist Historikerin und Kunsthistorikern am Institut für Neuzeit und Zeitgeschichtsforschung der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Zu ihren Forschungsschwerpunkten gehören die Historische Bildforschung, die Mentalitätsgeschichte, Volksfrömmigkeit und europäische Kulturgeschichte der Frühen Neuzeit. Angaben zur beteiligten Person Weis: Joëlle Weis war bis März 2019 Doktorandin an den Universitäten Luxemburg und Wien. Sie forscht zur frühneuzeitlichen Historiographie- und Gelehrtengeschichte. Angaben zur beteiligten Person Frasca-Rath: Anna Frasca-Rath ist Assistentin am Institut für Kunstgeschichte der Universität Wien. Ihre Forschungen widmen sich der Skulptur vom 17. bis 19. Jahrhundert, dem Kunst- und Kulturtransfer zwischen Italien und Nordeuropa sowie der britischen und speziell der viktorianischen Kunst. Sie hat in internationalen Journals, Tagungsbänden und Ausstellungskatalogen zu Themen der Skulptur des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts, zur Künstlerausbildung und zu rezeptions- und sammlungsgeschichtlichen Fragestellungen publiziert. Im Jahr 2016 kuratierte sie zusammen mit Annette Wickham die erste monographische Ausstellung zu John Gibson an der Royal Academy of Arts in London. Angaben zur beteiligten Person Lobenwein: Elisabeth Lobenwein ist Historikerin an der Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt. Angaben zur beteiligten Person Schreiber: Dr. Renate Schreiber, Jahrgang 1943, studierte Geschichte und Theaterwissenschaft an der Universität Wien, mit dem Schwerpunkt Kulturgeschichte und österreichische Geschichte. Mehrere Aufenthalte in Schweden, davon ein Jahr als Au Pair. Sie lebt als freischaffende Historikerin in Wien.

    Digitale Technologien und Methoden haben in den vergangenen Jahren immer mehr Einfluss auf die geisteswissenschaftliche Forschung gewonnen. Dies gilt nicht minder für das achtzehnte Jahrhundert: In allen einschlägigen Fachbereichen werden seit Jahren Texte, Bilder und Metadaten digital generiert, verarbeitet, analysiert und präsentiert. Ergebnis ist eine bisher nie dagewesene Konfrontation mit quantifizierenden Methoden auch in qualitativ arbeitenden Disziplinen sowie die Notwendigkeit einer Auseinandersetzung mit nationalen und globalen Datenstandards. Diese Standards entscheiden über die Interoperabilität – gewissermaßen die internationale Anschlussfähigkeit – der Daten und somit über die Nachhaltigkeit der eigenen Forschung.Die Österreichische Gesellschaft zur Erforschung des achtzehnten Jahrhunderts widmet ihr 34. Jahrbuch 2019 dem Thema der digitalen Forschung zum 18. Jahrhundert in Zentraleuropa. Die einzelnen vorgestellten Beiträge sind nicht nur Projektberichte, sondern referieren die Ergebnisse digital durchgeführter Forschungsarbeit. Sie eröffnen ein Panorama der möglichen methodischen Zugänge, von den Bildwissenschaften über Netzwerkanalyse und -darstellung hin zu digitaler Edition, Korpuslinguistik und digitaler Sprachwissenschaft sowie der Vernetzung von Forschungsdaten mit den Daten von Kulturerbe-Institutionen. Zu ihren Forschungsschwerpunkten gehören die Historische Bildforschung, die Mentalitätsgeschichte, Volksfrömmigkeit und europäische Kulturgeschichte der Frühen Neuzeit. Angaben zur beteiligten Person Weis: Joëlle Weis war bis März 2019 Doktorandin an den Universitäten Luxemburg und Wien. Sie forscht zur frühneuzeitlichen Historiographie- und Gelehrtengeschichte. Angaben zur beteiligten Person Frasca-Rath: Anna Frasca-Rath ist Assistentin am Institut für Kunstgeschichte der Universität Wien. Ihre Forschungen widmen sich der Skulptur vom 17. bis 19. Jahrhundert, dem Kunst- und Kulturtransfer zwischen Italien und Nordeuropa sowie der britischen und speziell der viktorianischen Kunst. Sie hat in internationalen Journals, Tagungsbänden und Ausstellungskatalogen zu Themen der Skulptur des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts, zur Künstlerausbildung und zu rezeptions- und sammlungsgeschichtlichen Fragestellungen publiziert. Im Jahr 2016 kuratierte sie zusammen mit Annette Wickham die erste monographische Ausstellung zu John Gibson an der Royal Academy of Arts in London. Angaben zur beteiligten Person Lobenwein: Elisabeth Lobenwein ist Historikerin an der Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt.     This book offers a critical introduction to the core technologies underlying the Internet from a humanistic perspective. It provides a cultural critique of computing technologies, by exploring the history of computing and examining issues related to writing, representing, archiving and searching. The book raises awareness of, and calls for, the digital humanities to address the challenges posed by the linguistic and cultural divides in computing, the clash between communication and control, and the biases inherent in networked technologies.A common problem with publications in the Digital Humanities is the dominance of the Anglo-American perspective. While seeking to take a broader view, the book attempts to show how cultural bias can become an obstacle to innovation both in the methodology and practice of the Digital Humanities. Its central point is that no technological instrument is culturally unbiased, and that all too often the geography that underlies technology coincides with the social and economic interests of its producers. The alternative proposed in the book is one of a world in which variation, contamination and decentralization are essential instruments for the production and transmission of digital knowledge.
