Probabilistic risk beliefs are key drivers of economic and health decisions, but people are not always certain about their beliefs. We study these "imprecise probabilities", also known as ambiguous beliefs. We show that imprecision is measurable separately from the levels of risk beliefs. People with higher levels of imprecision update their beliefs more in response to a randomized information treatment, and new information also causes changes in imprecision levels. We show that we can map our data onto both a standard Bayesian model and a version that is designed to handle imprecise probabilities; these models can match some features of our data but not all of them. Imprecise probabilities have important implications for our understanding of decisionmaking and for the design of programs intended to change people's minds.

Draws attention to the international legal framework as it relates to child labour and children's rights, and specifically to the situation of girls. Identifies the reasons why it is so important that the issues facing girls engaged in child labour be urgently addressed: the hidden nature of many forms of girls' work; the special vulnerability of girls who face multiple disadvantages; the "double burden" of having to combine household chores and economic activity; and the huge indirect impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic on child labour in general and on girls in particular

Health-maximizing and welfare-maximizing behaviors can be at odds, especially among disadvantaged groups, generating health disparities. We estimate a lifecycle model of medication and labor supply decisions using data on HIV-positive men. We evaluate an effective HIV treatment innovation that had harsh side effects: HAART. Measured in lifetime utility gains, HAART disproportionately benefitted higher-education men. Lower-education men were more likely to avoid the side effects of HAART that interfered with work. A counterfactual mandate to use HAART improves health but increases inequality because low-education individuals work less. A counterfactual non-labor income subsidy increases HAART adoption and improves health among lower-education individuals.

Using three waves of the Botswana AIDS Impact Survey (BAIS) collected by Statistics Botswana, we investigate how sexual behaviour, measured by number of partners and condom use, responds to objective and perceived risk; objective risk is captured by the HIV prevalence rate and perceived risk is represented by concern about the likelihood of being infected by HIV. Indicators of knowledge about HIV, which may affect behaviour and risk perceptions, are included. Endogeneity is addressed through instrumental variables, with HIV prevalence rate instrumented by the distance from respondent's area of residence to the district with the highest rate, while perceived risk is instrumented by duration (in months) between antiretroviral therapy (ART) rollout and the survey date. The HIV prevalence rate has no significant effect on the number of sexual partners or use of condoms but behaviour responds to changes in perceived risk: those who report becoming more concerned about infection or those who perceive their partners to be unfaithful are more likely to report condom use whereas those who report becoming less concerned are less likely to abstain and use a condom. The effectiveness of advice on health behaviour may be undermined by moral hazard.
