    In this provocative book, Pietro Pucci explores what he sees as Euripides's revolutionary literary art. While scholars have long pointed to subversive elements in Euripides’s plays, Pucci goes a step further in identifying a Euripidean program of enlightened thought enacted through carefully wrought textual strategies. The driving force behind this program is Euripides’s desire to subvert the traditional anthropomorphic view of the Greek gods—a belief system that in his view strips human beings of their independence and ability to act wisely and justly. Instead of fatuous religious beliefs, Athenians need the wisdom and the strength to navigate the challenges and difficulties of life.Throughout his lifetime, Euripides found himself the target of intense criticism and ridicule. He was accused of promoting new ideas that were considered destructive. Like his contemporary, Socrates, he was considered a corrupting influence. No wonder, then, that Euripides had to carry out his revolution "under cover." Pucci lays out the various ways the playwright skillfully inserted his philosophical principles into the text through innovative strategies of plot development, language and composition, and production techniques that subverted the traditionally staged anthropomorphic gods.

    One of the special charms of the Odyssey, according to Charles Segal, is the way it transports readers to fascinating places. Yet despite the appeal of its narrative, the Odyssey is fully understood only when its style, design, and mythical patterns are taken into account as well. Bringing a new richness to interpretation of this epic, Segal looks closely at key forms of social and personal organization which Odysseus encounters in his voyages. Segal also considers such topics as the relationship between bard and audience, the implications of the Odyssey's self-consciousness about its own poetics, and Homer's treatment of the nature of poetry.

    Die Welt der in den Tragödien des Aischylos so zahlreich und eindrücklich auftretenden Unheilsmächte wie etwa Daimon, Alastor oder Erinys erfährt hier erstmals eine zusammenhängende Darstellung. Zur philologischen Untersuchung dieser "dämonischen" Gestalten vor dem Hintergrund der literarischen Tradtion gesellen sich eindringende Interpretationen der erhaltenen aischyleischen Dramen, insbesondere der Orestie. Dabei zeigt sich, dass die Unheilsmächte und Rachegeister bei Aischylos für die Konstruktion und Deutung der tragischen Handlung eine zentrale Funktion besitzen. Hinter der unverkennbaren dramaturgischen Wirkungsabsicht werden jedoch auch Elemente lebendiger griechischer Religiosität und Kultpraxis fassbar. So vermittelt die Studie auch religionswissenschaftlich und kulturhistorisch Interessierten fundierte Einblicke inThemen wie Blutschuld und Rache, Fluch und Totengeiser oder die für das griechische Drama so grundlegende Verkettung von Schicksal und Schuld.
