    "In a century marked by totalitarian regimes, genocide, mass migrations, and shifting borders, the concept of memory in Eastern Europe is often synonymous with notions of trauma. In Ukraine, memory mechanisms were disrupted by political systems seeking to repress and control the past in order to form new national identities supportive of their own agendas. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, memory in Ukraine was released, creating alternate visions of the past, new national heroes, and new victims. This release of memories led to new conflicts and "memory wars." How does the past exist in contemporary Ukraine? The works collected in The Burden of the Past focus on commemorative practices, the politics of history, and the way memory influences Ukrainian politics, identity, and culture. The works explore contemporary memory culture in Ukraine and the ways in which it is being researched and understood. Drawing on work from historians, sociologists, anthropologists, psychologists, and political scientists, the collection represents a truly interdisciplinary approach.     Yellow Star, Red Star asks why Holocaust memory continues to be so deeply troubled—ignored, appropriated, and obfuscated—throughout Eastern Europe, even though it was in those lands that most of the extermination campaign occurred. As part of accession to the European Union, Jelena Subotić shows, East European states were required to adopt, participate in, and contribute to the established Western narrative of the Holocaust. This requirement created anxiety and resentment in post-communist states: Holocaust memory replaced communist terror as the dominant narrative in Eastern Europe, focusing instead on predominantly Jewish suffering in World War II. Influencing the European Union's own memory politics and legislation in the process, post-communist states have attempted to reconcile these two memories by pursuing new strategies of Holocaust remembrance. The memory, symbols, and imagery of the Holocaust have been appropriated to represent crimes of communism.Yellow Star, Red Star presents in-depth accounts of Holocaust remembrance practices in Serbia, Croatia, and Lithuania, and extends the discussion to other East European states. The book demonstrates how countries of the region used Holocaust remembrance as a political strategy to resolve their contemporary "ontological insecurities"—insecurities about their identities, about their international status, and about their relationships with other international actors. As Subotić concludes, Holocaust memory in Eastern Europe has never been about the Holocaust or about the desire to remember the past, whether during communism or in its aftermath. Rather, it has been about managing national identities in a precarious and uncertain world

    Die Ansiedlung von Menschen unterschiedlicher Herkunft hat in vielen Nationalstaaten dazu geführt, dass Distanzen zwischen »uns« und »ihnen« räumlich und symbolisch neu arrangiert werden müssen. Dies betrifft auch die ehemaligen Kolonialmetropolen Frankreich und Großbritannien, in denen Debatten um Integration und Diskriminierung mit einer ebenso umstrittenen Neureflexion der nationalen Vergangenheit verknüpft sind. So hat der transatlantische Sklavenhandel seit den 1990er Jahren erinnerungskulturelle Bedeutung gewonnen. Vor dem Hintergrund dieser Entwicklung analysiert Sonja Dinter Konflikte und Wege postkolonialer Geschichtspolitik, die die Umverteilung von Handlungsmacht in Geschichte und Gegenwart verarbeiten muss.

    Gibt es so etwas wie europäische Identität(en)? Die Frage nach nationalen und europäischen Erinnerungskulturen und Identitätskonstruktionen, bei der das Konzept des Erinnerungsortes einen zentralen Stellenwert einnimmt, bewegt nicht nur die jüngere geschichtswissenschaftliche Forschung. Obwohl das frühe 19. Jahrhundert lange als Initialphase nationaler Identitätsfindung galt, wurde das Modell des Erinnerungsortes bislang nur vereinzelt auf das Beobachtungsfeld der Napoleonischen Kriege angewandt. Renommierte Wissenschaftler fragen in diesem Band nach verschiedenen nationalen Narrationen und der Nutzbarkeit der Kategorie des europäischen Erinnerungsortes. Drei thematische Schwerpunkte dienen als Folie für deren Analyse: nationale und regionale Erinnerungskulturen, Geschichtspolitik und Deutungen sowie Instrumentalisierungen im europäischen Kontext.
