    This book is a study of three iatrosofia (the notebooks of traditional healers) from the Ottoman and modern periods of Greece. The main text is a collection of the medical recipes of the monk Gymnasios Lauriōtis (b. 1858). Gymnasios had a working knowledge of over 2,000 plants and their use in medical treatments. Two earlier iatrosofia are used for parallels for Gymnasios’s recipes. One was written c. 1800 by a practical doctor near Khania, Crete, and illustrated by a second hand. The second iatrosofion dates to the sixteenth century; ascribed to a Meletios, the text survives in the Codex Vindobonensis gr. med. 53. The contents of these and other iatrosofia are predominantly medical, with many of the remedies taken from folk medicine, classical and Hellenistic pharmacological writers, and Galen. The book opens with a biography of the monk Gymnasios and his recipes and then a description of the Cretan and Meletios iatrosofia. The iatrosophia, their role in Greek medical history, and the methods of healing are the subject of chapter 2. The Greek text of Gymnasios’s recipes are accompanied by a facing English translation. A commentary offers for each of Gymnasios’s recipes passages (translated into English) from the two other iatrosophia to serve as parallels, as well as an analysis of the pharmacopoeia in the medical texts. The book concludes with Greek and English indices of the material medica (plants, mineral, and animal substances) and the diseases, and then a general index

Jahrhundert wurden außergewöhnliche Körper in den Wissenschaften als »Monstrositäten« bezeichnet und in der Populärkultur als »Freaks« zur Sprache gebracht.In einer kulturphilosophischen Perspektive nimmt dieser Band die Prozesse der Wissensbildung am monströsen Körper im Zusammenhang mit kulturellen Vorstellungen des Normalen in den Blick. Birgit Stammberger zeigt, dass Monstrositäten zwar stets eine Störung wissenschaftlicher und kultureller Ordnungen darstellen. Dennoch ist diese Widerständigkeit kein geschichtsloser Bereich, sondern Funktion und Resultat normativer Bestimmungen des Körpers: Monströse Körperobjekte werden nicht einfach nur angeschaut, sondern stehen in einem Zusammenhang mit Geschlechterdiskursen und Rassismus.

    Im elften Band des ‚Jahrbuchs Literatur und Medizin‘ sind drei Originalbeiträge vereint, deren Schwerpunkt auf Texten und Fragestellungen der Gegenwart liegt. Mit Blick auf die untersuchten Gattungen werden das Depressionsnarrativ, das sogenannte Medical profession-writing sowie das Tagebuch diskutiert. In den Essays werden zum einen Ärzteliteratinnen und -literaten aus vier Jahrhunderten schwedischer Medizin- und Literaturgeschichte vorgestellt, zum anderen wird den Hintergründen eines Romans über einen Hepatitis-Skandal der DDR von 1978/1979 nachgegangen. Als Quellen werden das französische Lehrdrama ‚La Vaccine‘ (1809) von Charles-Chrétin-Henri Marc sowie Auszüge aus zwei Romanen des finnischen Ärzteliteraten Raimo Puustinen vorgestellt. Den Abschluss des Bandes bilden zwei Rezensionen zu Repräsentationen alternder und alter Frauen in Literatur und Film sowie zu einer Anthologie von Ärzteliteratinnen und -literaten vom Mittelalter bis zur Gegenwart.

    "This chapter introduces the subject of personhood and its significance to Indic traditions and academic discourses. The category of 'person' is distinguished from the categories of 'self' and 'body' by virtue of its relational, permeable, and "extensional" or "expansive" character. The scholarly tendency to frame persons as "microcosms"-bodies that contain within the replication of the cosmos-at-large-is problematized. Indic persons are most often conceived as outward-facing, phenomenalistic, world-wide entities. Chapters of the work are summarized. Significance of Indic theories of personhood to modern debates on environmental personhood and legal personhood is discussed"-- Personhood is central to the worldview of ancient India. Across voluminous texts and diverse traditions, the subject of the puruá1£a, the Sanskrit term for "person," has been a constant source of insight and innovation. Yet little sustained scholarly attention has been paid to the precise meanings of the puruá1£a concept or its historical transformations within and across traditions. In Puruá1£a: Personhood in Ancient India, Matthew I. Robertson traces the history of Indic thinking about puruá1£as through an extensive analysis of the major texts and traditions of ancient India.Through clear explanations of classic Sanskrit texts and the idioms of Indian traditions, Robertson discerns the emergence and development of a sustained, paradigmatic understanding that persons are deeply confluent with the world. Personhood is worldhood. Puruá1£a argues for the significance of this "worldly" thinking about personhood to Indian traditions and identifies a host of techniques that were developed to "extend" and "expand" persons to ever-greater scopes. Ritualized swellings of sovereigns to match the extent of their realm find complement in ascetic meditations on the intersubjective nature of perceptually delimited person-worlds, which in turn find complement in yogas of sensory restraint, the dietary regimens of Ayurvedic medicine, and the devotional theologies by which persons "share" and "eat" the expansive divinity of God. Whether in the guise of a king, an ascetic, a yogi, a buddha, or a patient in the care of an Ayurvedic physician, fully realized persons know themselves to be coterminous with the horizons of their world.Offering new readings of classic works and addressing the fields of religion, politics, philosophy, medicine, and literature, Puruá1£a: Personhood in Ancient India challenges us to reexamine the goals of ancient Indian religions and yields new insights into the interrelated natures of persons and the worlds in which they live

    This book is a study of three iatrosofia (the notebooks of traditional healers) from the Ottoman and modern periods of Greece. The main text is a collection of the medical recipes of the monk Gymnasios Lauriōtis (b. 1858). Gymnasios had a working knowledge of over 2,000 plants and their use in medical treatments. Two earlier iatrosofia are used for parallels for Gymnasios’s recipes. One was written c. 1800 by a practical doctor near Khania, Crete, and illustrated by a second hand. The second iatrosofion dates to the sixteenth century; ascribed to a Meletios, the text survives in the Codex Vindobonensis gr. med. 53. The contents of these and other iatrosofia are predominantly medical, with many of the remedies taken from folk medicine, classical and Hellenistic pharmacological writers, and Galen. The book opens with a biography of the monk Gymnasios and his recipes and then a description of the Cretan and Meletios iatrosofia. The iatrosophia, their role in Greek medical history, and the methods of healing are the subject of chapter 2. The Greek text of Gymnasios’s recipes are accompanied by a facing English translation. A commentary offers for each of Gymnasios’s recipes passages (translated into English) from the two other iatrosophia to serve as parallels, as well as an analysis of the pharmacopoeia in the medical texts. The book concludes with Greek and English indices of the material medica (plants, mineral, and animal substances) and the diseases, and then a general index

Inzwischen ist auch der Gesundheitsbegriff als eigenständige Reflexionsfolie in das Blickfeld der wissenschaftlichen Forschung geraten, Bezugnahmen auf seinen metaphorischen Gehalt bleiben jedoch weiterhin die Ausnahme. Dies erstaunt, da Metaphern aus dem semantischen Feld der Gesundheit in der gegenwärtigen Alltagskultur zunehmend an Präsenz gewinnen. Der vorliegende Sammelband nimmt die ästhetisch-kulturellen Dimensionen von ‚Gesundheit‘ in den Blick: Die Beiträge reflektieren in diachroner und interdisziplinärer Perspektive die Frage, was Menschen zu unterschiedlichen Zeiten unter ‚Gesundheit‘ verstanden und mit welchen sprachlichen Bildern sie versucht haben, die semantischen Leerstellen, die der Begriff mit sich führt, zu füllen.     "In Song-dynasty China (960-1279), narratives based on authors' personal experience began to proliferate in medical treatises, introducing a new strategy for substantiating knowledge. The rise of this empirical approach, which had appeared only sporadically in pre-Song medical literature, provides a window into transformations in the construction of textual authority in middle-period China. Ruth Yun-Ju Chen traces this development by examining medical genres and notebooks (biji), showing that it was both a product of and a catalyst for a broader epistemic transition and the advent of a new medical learning environment"-- Why and how did the strategy of documenting medical practices through personal experience rise to prominence in China? This question is at the heart of Good Formulas, the first book-length study of the use of empirical evidence in Chinese medicine between the ninth and thirteenth centuries. The rise of this new approach to substantiating knowledge, which had appeared only sporadically in earlier medical literature, provides a window into transformations in the construction of textual authority in mid-imperial China. Focusing on medical genres and working extensively with notebooks (biji), Ruth Yun-Ju Chen shows that employing empirical evidence became prominent in conjunction with a publishing boom that enabled wider availability of medical texts and treatises. To convince a more socioculturally diverse readership to believe their claims and to win intertextual debates with contemporaneous authors, many Song medical authors turned to empirical methodology. Revealing a correlation between publishing cultures and changes in persuasion strategies in medical genres, Good Formulas offers new insights into the histories of medicine, knowledge production, and publishing in China. It also provides rich examples for scholars interested in the development of empirical evidence in the premodern world

    A considerable number of ancient medical texts has not been yet edited drawing on the whole manuscript tradition. This is also the case of the treatise On Affections, a medical book traditionally transmitted as a part of the Hippocratic Corpus. This volume offers the first critical edition of On Affections that considers the whole manuscript and printed tradition. It also includes an exhaustive account of the history of the text, a translation into English and a commentary. On Affections is unique among the Hippocratic writings in that it presents itself as a medical handbook for intelligent lay readers and not for physicians. The book includes a systematic discussion of diseases, and has clear affinities with other Hippocratic texts. Furthermore, it also contains a catalogue of foods and their properties, the combination of these two topics being unparalleled in the rest of the extant treatises. References to other existing or yet-to-be-written medical books on different topics such as eye diseases, women diseases, tertian and quartan fevers and the recipe collection called On Drugs hint at the wide circulation and availability of written medical knowledge at the beginning of the fourth century BCE

In den Essays werden zum einen Ärzteliteratinnen und -literaten aus vier Jahrhunderten schwedischer Medizin- und Literaturgeschichte vorgestellt, zum anderen wird den Hintergründen eines Romans über einen Hepatitis-Skandal der DDR von 1978/1979 nachgegangen. Als Quellen werden das französische Lehrdrama ‚La Vaccine‘ (1809) von Charles-Chrétin-Henri Marc sowie Auszüge aus zwei Romanen des finnischen Ärzteliteraten Raimo Puustinen vorgestellt. Den Abschluss des Bandes bilden zwei Rezensionen zu Repräsentationen alternder und alter Frauen in Literatur und Film sowie zu einer Anthologie von Ärzteliteratinnen und -literaten vom Mittelalter bis zur Gegenwart.

Jahrhundert und dann auf die Bedeutung der Syphilis bei Arthur Schnitzler, später auch noch auf Friedrich Nietzsches Syphilis eingegangen. Andererseits stehen zeitgenössische Werke im Fokus: Die therapeutische Funktion der Literatur auf gesellschaftlicher Ebene wird am Beispiel des japanischen Schriftstellers Atushi Nakajima (1909–1942) diskutiert; die narrative Verarbeitung der eigenen Krankheit wird anhand von Siri Hustvedts Buch ‚The Shaking Woman‘ (2010) analysiert. Die aktuelle Corona-Pandemie wird in den Essays aufgegriffen, wenn Darstellungen von Seuchen in der Geschichte in den Blick kommen. Darüber hinaus werden aber auch verschiedene Formen der Literarisierung des bevorstehenden Todes in zeitgenössischer Literatur vertieft und mit der Frage nach der Selbstbestimmung enggeführt.     Die Literaturnobelpreisträgerin Doris Lessing hat ein umfangreiches Werk hinterlassen und beschäftigte sich über 52 Jahre intensiv mit Krankheiten, Arztbildern und Methoden der Medizin. Ihre Darstellung lässt sich nicht auf einzelne Einflüsse reduzieren, sondern greift eine ideologisierte und politisierte Medizin ebenso auf, wie Schwächen radikaler Gegenentwürfe. Systeme der Rassentrennung sowie marxistische und faschistoide Theorien werden in ihrer Brutalität illustriert. Durch die Rezeption C. G. Jungs und wichtiger medizinhistorischer Motive erfolgt ein Gegenentwurf, der Leid und existentielle Umstände des Menschseins mit wissenschaftichen Methoden zu versöhnen sucht. Soziale Dimensionen offenbaren den Arzt als „Sisyphos“, der eigene Schwächen mit denen des Patienten aufgreift, um letztlich doch immer zu scheitern. Die Analyse der zeitlosen Gedankenexperimente Lessings bietet damit Klinikern und Patienten perspektivenreiche Einblicke in den medizinischen Alltag.
